In 1989, the demonstration named the Baltic Way also known as the Baltic Chain— was held in the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania by its citizens in a call for independence from the Soviet Union. On 23rd August 1989, some two million participants formed a human chain, hand-in-hand all the way from the Estonian capital of Tallinn its Latvian counterpart, Riga, through to the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius - six hundred kilometres long. It became the longest human chain ever created and turned out to be the final push needed for much sought-after independence. This historic event became the source of inspiration for this composition. The introduction of thefirst movement, ‘Struggle for Independence’, is based on a nocturne for piano by the renowned Lithuanian composer and painter Mikalojus Konstantinas iurlionis (1875-1911), thematic material from which has been incorporated throughout the whole composition. The melancholic beginning is followed by a powerful theme which reflects the resolve of the Baltic people. The sudden aggressive, dissonant chords and a dominant and—in rhythmic terms—contrary bass drum announce that the resistance is not going smoothly. Just for a moment, we hear the anthem of the Soviet Union in the lower brass, but this is relentlessly pushed to the background by the rest of the band playing the Lithuanian national anthem, ‘Tautiška giesm ’ (Lithuania, our homeland). The second movement, ‘Decades of Suffering’, echoes life under the Soviet Union's thumb. In the pursuit of independence, a peaceful protest is planned in which a human chain is formed across the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This ‘Chain of Freedom’ is depicted in the final movement of the work.

Pacific Dreams describes the experience of Miguel, a traveling composer from Spain who, feeling somewhat alienated from his homeland, is wandering through an area of Sydney known as The Rocks. At a small outdoor market in a typical street of this oldcolonial neighbourhood, he discovers a print of William DeShazos painting Pacific Dreams Portrayed in the painting is the surf of one of the exotic islands in the Pacific. Next, with the impressive Sydney Harbour Bridge looming over the narrowstreets of The Rocks, he envisions sultry Pacific beaches. Suddenly a theme he once composed about the lakes in Japan comes to him. Is it the Asian influences present in cosmopolitan Sydney that bring this theme to mind? Or perhaps the waters aroundSydney, over which he could sail to Tahiti? He is uncertain. Could this same theme be used to create a new composition about his feelings for the metropolis Sydney? How then to work his Pacific Dreams into the mix? Miguel is certainly no fan ofHawaiian music. Mayby he could use the vocabularies of islands like Hawaii and Tahiti, their beautiful vowel combinations being sung ad libitum by a mixed choir. With these ideas and his newly purchased print of Pacific Dreams, he boards the Metroat Circular Quay. He has a final glimpse of the harbour and the Sydney Opera House as the train races into the ground. On to the hotel! To work! He must compose!Maestoso : Miguel is impressed as he gazes upon the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And yet, hewants to go away from this city. Away, to an exotic island in the Pacific.Steady Rock : In the Rocks, musicians are playing at a square. Miguel basks in the atmosphere but at the same time he is fantasizing about Hawaii and Tahiti.Andante Lamentoso :In his hotel room, Miguel is feeling sad and lonely in this big city. He takes comfort in his Pacific Dreams.Allegro : Miguel boards the boat that takes him from Darling Harbour to Circular Quay. In his mind he is traveling on to Hawaii. Or is ithome, where the bolero is playing? He is pulled back to reality by the skyline of Sydney.

Composed by Paul Raphael, Explorers on the Moon, the sequel to his 2017 work Destination Moon, was composed in 2019 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Moon Landings. It is inspired by the Belgian author Hergé and his most famous creation, Tintin. The music uses Hergé’s story from 1950 almost twenty years prior to the first ever moon landing - following Tintin and his fellow adventurers as they become the first humans on the Moon. This fantastic piece is split into three parts, titled ‘Space’, ‘Nightmare Land’ and ‘The Journey Home’ and is one of the most spectacular contest pieces in recent years. Explorers on the Moon, komponiert von Paul Raphael, entstand 2019 anlässlich des 50.

In this composition, Dizzy Stratford gives a musical impression of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s beautiful hometown. The theme of the work has been derived from the middle movement of one of Mozart’s piano sonatas and provides the concert band with a glimpse into the creative genius of this great composer.

The Latin American mood of the piece is a salute to the population of California, a state which many feel still clearly displays its Mexican roots. The melody and intoxicating rhythm of the music oozes excitement, thus ensuring every single member of your audience will go home in a joyous mood! The Latin American mood of this piece is truly infectious and will make all players, and audience members, get up and dance. Why not add a little Latin spice to any concert with this lively new work.

Even the most basic understanding of Western music must include an intimate familiarity with the magnificent body of works by J.S.Bach. The charming beauty of the ARIOSO from BWV 156 must almost certainly appear on anyone?s personal list of the world's most beautiful melodies. What a wonderful vehicle for the study of artful phrasing and expression! Don't let the Grade 2 designation make you overlook this exquisite rendition for bands that normally play at grades 4, 5, and 6. Musicians at any level of ability will find great rewards here.As the perfect festival centerpiece or as a lovely introspective moment on any concert, Jacob de Haan's touching arrangement of Bach'sincomparable ARIOSO, speaking its own inherent and spiritual truth, is sure to find a permanent home in your brass band library.

British composer Philip Sparke was asked to write this arrangement of Hymn to Frei for the Norwegian Brass Band Frei Hornmusikk . Sparke had already used part of this hymn by a composer well-known in the home region of the band in The Saga of Haakon the Good. In A Norwegian Hymn, three verses of the tune can be heard: the first is performed by various soloists, followed by a quieter second verse, before the third verse brings the piece to a triumphal close. A beautiful piece, which is also excellent to use to work on musicality with bands in lower divisions. Sparke hatte Teile dieses Kirchenlieds bereits zuvor in The Saga of Haakon the Good verwendet. The Saga of Haakon the Good ».

Who doesn’t know the children’s TV series Thunderbirds. The Gerry Anderson classic is still as popular today with both children and adults as when it was first shown in the sixties. This arrangement of the theme tune will be loved by all and will leave your audience humming it all the way home.

Marcho Brioso was commissioned by The Brioso Brass, a British-style brass band from Hokkaido, Japan. They gave the first performance in January 2012.The commission was for a bright and breezy march that the band could use as their theme tune, so Marcho Brioso falls into the composer’s series of Broadway-style marches, which includes Slipstream, The Bandwagon and Jubiloso. After a short introduction a solo cornet plays the main theme, accompanied by a euphonium counter-melody. A secondary phrase from the horns and baritones leads to a tutti version of the main theme which is followed by the traditional ‘bass’ strain. A change of key heralds thetrio section, which features a cantabile melody on euphonium; this is then taken up by the full band after a short bridge passage and further change of key. This takes us back to the home key which sees a quiet staccato version of the main theme lead to a recapitulation and a short coda which brings the march to a close.
