The pop song Good Vibrations, which appeared as a single in 1966, is one of the most celebrated hits of The Beach Boys. The piece, composed and produced by Brian Wilson, has been called a mini symphony. Various covers versions have been made, including a marvellous a cappella version by the King’s Singers. This arrangement for brass band, written by Don Campbell, is just as delightful as the original. The soulful singing style of Moyet and the electronic, innovative pop that Clarke made melded well together in the group Yazoo with hits such as Only You and Don’t Go. However, after a number of years Moyet went her own way and forged a solo career, during which she demonstrated a somewhat more traditional sound. She recorded several covers (such as The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face and That Ole Devil Called Love) but she also wrotefine songs herself, such as Love Resurrection and, of course, the expressive song AllCried Out. This arrangement by Peter Kleine Schaars does justice to the atmosphere of the original song. In The Essence of Youth the composer gives an insight into childhood and youth — inspired by his own daughter. The opening of sparking rhythms, dynamic contrasts and changes of time signature paint a vivid picture of the unpredictability of children. The first and second movements recount the love — and also tension and the worries — in the adult-child bond, through dissonant harmonies but also pretty melodies. The fugue-like ending leads to a final splendid chorale: a picture of proud parents with their child! In The Essence of Youth geeft de componist zijn visie op de kindertijd en de jeugd. Il primo movimento, sulla scia dell’introduzione, anticipa una parte di solo che accompagna al secondo movimento, testimonianza dell’amore infinito dei genitori nei confronti dei figli. Una fuga basata sul tema iniziale contraddistingue il terzo movimento che conduce all’apoteosi finale.

Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) composed this madrigal in 1605. It appears in the fifth of his eight books of madrigals and is one of his most famous. Cruda Amarilli are the first words in a soliloquy from the play Il pastor fido, which was published in Venice in 1589 by the dramatic poet Battista Guarini (1538-1612). The soliloquy translates as follows: Cruel Amaryllis, who with your name to love, alas, bitterly you teach. Amaryllis, more than the white privetpure, and more beautiful, but deafer than the deaf asp, and fiercer and more elusive. Since telling offended you, I shall die in silence. Barry Toombs' elegant brass quintet arrangement of Monteverdi's madrigal setting of Cruda Amarilli successfully imitates the fluid quality of the human voice.
