The pop song Good Vibrations, which appeared as a single in 1966, is one of the most celebrated hits of The Beach Boys. The piece, composed and produced by Brian Wilson, has been called a mini symphony. Various covers versions have been made, including a marvellous a cappella version by the King’s Singers. This arrangement for brass band, written by Don Campbell, is just as delightful as the original.

Saying Goodbye is one of a series of original works in pop, rock and swing styles Philip Sparke has composed to try and give brass bands their own popular vocabulary and identity. It could be described as happy-sad in mood, a feature of much of Sparke’s slower music. A perfect light addition for your concert.

A Stroll in the Park is een werk in de traditie van ‘lopende’ muziek (zoals Promenade uit Moessorgski’s Schilderijententoonstelling of Walking the Dog uit Gershwin’s Shall we Dance?). Het beschrijft de genoegensvan een ontspannen wandeling in een stadspark op een zomerse zondagmiddag. De Engelse uitdrukking ‘a walk in the park’ of ‘a stroll in the park’ kan de betekenis hebben van ‘iets betrekkelijk eenvoudigs’ - en daarin ligt een duidelijkeaanwijzing over de manier waarop dit werk gespeeld moet worden: ontspannen, zorgeloos en relaxed.

Saying Goodbye ist ein Stück aus einer Reihe von Originalwerken in Pop-, Rock- und Swingstilen, die Philip Sparke komponierte, um Brass Bands mit einer eigenen populären Sprache und Identität auszustatten. Die Stimmung lässt sich als fröhlich-traurig beschreiben, ein Merkmal, das in Sparkes langsamerer Musik oft zu finden ist. The title is a popular saying in England. It means that's where the money is. Where there's muck, there's power is such a popular expression in the United Kingdom. The saying inspired Peter Martin to compose a highly attractive piece in four parts, consisting of contemporary dances that can also be performed separately. Let's dance!

De titel is een populair gezegde in Engeland. Het betekent vrij vertaald - waar het geld zit. 'Where there's muck there is power' is zo'n gevleugelde uitspraak uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Het gezegde inspireerde Peter Martin tothet schrijven van een bijzonder aardig 5-delig werk met moderne dansen welke ook gescheiden van elkaar gespeeld kunnen worden. Let's dance! 1. Easy does it - Steady Rock Een aanstekelijk stukje in rock-stijl. De rockmuziek bestaatvanaf begin 60-er jaren en sindsdien is de stijl populair gebleven maar er is geen genre waar zoveel bands de grond in- en uitgestampt worden. Maar het blijft leuk. 2. Best Foot Forward - mars positief De grootste doemdenkers wordenvrolijk bij het aanhoren van een vrolijke mars. De oorsprong van de mars is niet te achterhalen maar de stijl blijft populair en actueel. Best Foot Forward is een op Amerikaanse leest geschoeide mars. 3. Swing Bin - De swingstijldie eind 20-er jaren in de VS losbarstte was een uitvloeisel van de crisisjaren. Aangevoerd door Benny Goodman en de Dorsey Brothers (Tommy en Jimmy) werd deze vorm een rage die grote invloed bleef houden op de ontwikkeling vande jazzmuziek. Stilzitten is er niet bij want de muziek nodigt uit tot het losmaken van al die luie spieren en waar kan dat het beste? In de concertzaal maar het liefst op de dansvloer. 4. The Supreme Skedaddle - alla US March Eenuitsmijter vormt de Supreme Skedaddle, een mars in US-stijl. Het woord skedaddle is een interessant item voor etymologen maar de componist kent het woord uit zijn Noord-Engelse geboortegrond. Het betekent daar 'verspilling vaniets'. Maar de feestelijke mars is beslist geen verspilling van papier of energie.

Glitter and glamour, good-looking people, a lot of Bling Bling and fast cars images like these will cross our minds when we think of the movie world. However, reality proves to be different : as a rule, a tremendous amount of work will have been done on the set before a film is ready to be shown on the big screen.
A visit to an actual movie set inspired John Emerson Blackstone to write a composition bearing the same name. He had both seen a number of characteristic attributes and heard the typical phrases used in film making, and he incorporated them into ‘On the Movie Set’ .

In the first part, ‘The Clapboard’, a ‘director’s assistant’ is supposed to shout “Quieton the set’” and “Action!”, as is done before a real scene is shot. Subsequently, in order to create the right atmosphere, the clacking of a ‘Clapboard’ should be heard.
During a romantic scene we should be transported to another world by means of sweet sounds in the background, so romantic music is of course heard in the next part, ‘Love Scene’.
At the end of a long working day ‘It’s a wrap’ is called on the set to inform everyone that the filming on that day is completed.

Now there is only one more thing left to dream of : an Oscar.....

The use of the right props will add to the performance and appreciation of ‘On the Movie Set’. A red carpet and a glamorous reception should give your audience the feeling they are attending a real ‘opening night’!

‘Glamour’ en ‘Glitter’, mooie mensen, veel ‘bling bling’ en snelle auto’s. Zomaar een aantal zaken waar we aan denken als het om de filmwereld gaat. Maar voordat de film klaar is voor de bioscoop moet er doorgaans hard gewerkt wordentijdens het draaien op de filmset.
Een bezoekje op een filmset inspireerde John Emerson Blackstone tot het schrijven van ‘On the Movieset’. Hij zag een aantal zeer karakteristieke attributen en hoorde kreten die hij verwerktein deze compositie.

In het eerste deel: ‘The Clapboard’, is het de bedoeling dat de assistent van de regisseur ‘de bekende kreten’ (Quiet on the set of And Action!) roept, voordat er een take opgenomen wordt. Daarnamoet natuurlijk met een ‘Clapboard’ geklakt worden.
Bij een ‘Love Scene’ hoort uiteraard sfeerverhogende romantische muziek. Want zwijmelen bij een film gaat nu eenmaal niet zonder zoete klanken.
Aan het einde van eenlange dag klinkt altijd ‘It’s a wrap’. Dit betekent dat het laatste shot van de dag gemaakt is.

Nu maar hopen dat er een oscar in het verschiet ligt.

Het gebruik van de juiste rekwisieten zalde uitvoering en waardering van ‘On the Movieset’ ten goede komen. Een rode loper en een chique ontvangst zullen uw gasten een echt ‘premi?re’ gevoel geven.

In a four-part composition Rieks van der Velde takes us to the richly varied area surrounding the university city of Cambridge.
The Dutch composer was especially inspired by the atmosphere of Cambridgeshire, the county which lies north ofLondon.

1. The Journey.
Although on arrival the area looks peaceful and friendly, the ruggedness of its inhabitants and landscape have an unmistakable influence on the music.
In the course of the tour, which starts with an Allegromovement, we are shown the vitality, energy and freshness of the Cambridgeshire countryside.
Short themes, swift and sudden motifs and rhythmical patterns supported by the drive of percussion instruments give expression to this image.
Thefirst part is concluded by two Calmo movements in which the music expresses how the cathedral in the city of Ely comes into sight and is gradually approached.

2. Visit to Ely Cathedral.
The famous Norman cathedral church of Ely, whichwas built in 1109, has attracted tourists from all over the world apart from being a place of worship and heritage site.
A cornet solo introduces the contemplative mood of the composition at this point.
The mystical atmosphere of thecathedral runs through this lyrical part like a continuous thread.

3. The Pub.
The thirst caused by this intensive journey makes a visit to the local pub a definite must.
These “public houses”, which may be open until the earlyhours of the morning, offer all kinds of entertainment.
Drinks are served liberally and the atmosphere is lively.

4. The Journey Back.
Time has flown: In other words, the moment of departure has come sooner than one would havewished.
In a flashback which recaptures elements of the first part of the composition we say goodbye to Cambridgeshire in a fitting manner.
Two scintillating final measures bring us abruptly back to the present.

In een viertal delen neemt Rieks van der Velde ons mee door de zeer gevarieerde streek rond de universiteitsstad Cambridge.
De Nederlandse componist liet zich inspireren door vooral de sfeer in het graafschap Cambridgeshire ten noorden vanLonden.

1. The Journey.
De aankomst in de streek is vriendelijk te noemen doch de grilligheid van de mensen en het landschap heeft een onmiskenbare invloed op de muziek.
De rondreis welke start op het Allegro laat Cambridgeshire zienals een streek van vitaliteit, energie en frisheid.
Korte themas, flitsende motiefjes en ritmische patroontjes gesteund door stuwend slagwerk bevestigen dit beeld.
Het eerste gedeelte besluit met twee Calmo gedeelten waarbij het zicht op dekathedraal van de stad Ely en het naderen ervan wordt aangegeven.

2. Visit to Ely Cathedral.
In 1109 werd de beroemde kathedraal van Ely gebouwd die tot op de dag van vandaag een grote aantrekkingskracht geniet van niet alleentoeristen.
Het rustpunt van de compositie wordt ingeleid door een cornetsolo.
De mystieke sfeer van de kathedraal is de rode draad in dit lyrische gedeelte.

3. The Pub.
Een intensieve rondreis maakt dorstig en een bezoek aan depub is uiteraard een must.
Tot 11 uur s avonds kan men er terecht voor alle vormen van vertier. De drank vloeit rijkelijk en de sfeer is feestelijk.

4. The Journey Back.
Er is een tijd van komen en gaan, en dat moment komt eerder danje zou willen met andere woorden de tijd is omgevlogen.
Met een flash back naar het eerste deel wordt op passende wijze afscheid genomen van Cambridgeshire.
Twee flitsende slotmaten zetten ons in één klap weer in het hier en nu.

A brief history: Pentecost Monday was a special day for schools in Yorkshire (England).
There were a variety of activities. The pupils of Sabine Baring-Gould would meet with the children of a nearby village. It seemed like a good idea that during the walk would be sung. But she could not find a suitable song and decided to write one by herself. Onward Christian Soldiers was the result.
It soon became very popular, though she herself was not entirely satisfied with the rhyme scheme. The melody used (St. Gertrude) was by the famous English composer Sir Arthur S. Sullivan.
Back to now: Gawan Roberts, has given the hymn a proper update. He gave the still popularsong a solid rock beat and added daring harmonies. So it's popular, for current generations, again for years. Onward!

Een stukje geschiedenis: Pinkster-Maandag was een bijzondere dag voor de scholen in Yorkshire (Engeland).
Er vonden allerlei activiteiten plaats. De leerlingen van Sabine Baring-Gould zouden samenkomen met de kinderen van eennaburig dorp. Het leek haar een goed idee, dat er tijdens de wandeling er naar toe, gezongen zou worden. Ze kon echter geen geschikt lied vinden en besloot er zelf maar één te schrijven. ‘Onward Christian Soldiers’ was het resultaat.
Het werd spoedig erg populair, al was ze zelf niet geheel tevreden over het rijmschema. De gebruikte melodie (St. Gertrude) was van de bekende Engelse componist Sir Arthur S. Sullivan.

Terug naar nu: Gawan Robertsheeft de hymne een behoorlijke update gegeven. Hij voorzag het nog steeds populaire lied van een stevige rockbeat en voegde af en toe gewaagde harmonisaties (samenklanken) toe. Zo kan het, ook voor de huidige generaties, weerjaren mee. Onward!

Cole Porter was one of the great masters of Broadway musicals during the thirties, forties and fifties, with So in Love, from the musical Kiss Me Kate, being one of his best loved works. It has been recorded by many artists including Bing Crosby, Lulu, Shirley Bassey and Julie Andrews, however it is the Ella Fitzgerald version that is best known. This jazzy musical classic can now be enjoyed by your brass band with this excellent new arrangement.

Cole Porter schrieb unvergessene, wundervolle Musicals und Lieder. Seine Musik wurde schon von vielen großen Künstlern interpretiert - von Jazzentertainern wie Ella Fitzgerald und Frank Sinatra über klassische Sängerinnen bis hin zu Popkünstlern wie U2 und Tom Waits. Mit Kazuhiro Moritas Bearbeitung des romantischen Songs So in Love aus dem Musical Kiss Me Kate können Sie sich nun in diese illustre Riege einreihen!

L’auteur-compositeur américain Cole Porter (1891-1964) est initié au piano dès son plus jeune ge. Plus tard, il suit un cursus universitaire Yale puis Paris. Sa vie a suscité bien des commentaires. En 1918, il épouse Linda Lee Thomas. Le couple partage sa vie entre Paris, Venise, New York et Hollywood où Cole Porter se consacre la composition de musiques de films. Le mariage est heureux en dépit de l’homosexualité notoire de Cole Porter. En 1937, il est victime d’un grave accident qui le laisse handicapé vie. Cole Porter restera meurtri par cette expérience. Son épouse meurt en 1954. Quatre ans plus tard, il est amputé de la jambe droite. Son appétit de vivre et saflamme créatrice s’éteignent. Il meurt en 1964.Cole Porter a composé de superbes chansons et comédies musicales dont certaines sont encore très appréciées de nos jours. Il suffit d’évoquer I’ve Got You Under My Skin ou Every Time We Say Goodbye. Sa musique a été reprise par de nombreux artistes : des crooners et grandes vedettes du jazz telles que Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald et Oscar Peterson aux cantatrices Renée Fleming et Kiri Te Kanawa. Certains artistes pop, notamment U2 ou Tom Waits, ont également fait une incursion dans son riche répertoire.So in Love est une chanson romantique extraite de la comédie musicale Kiss Me Kate (1948).

The Netherlands have been an important trading nation for a long time partly as a result of their geographical situation.
One of the first multinationals in The Netherlands was the ‘Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie’ (VOC).
The aim of the VOC was to send ships to Asia in order to buy pepper and spices, and to take over the Portuguese monopoly in this field. The Company was successful. An era of great prosperity resulted, in which the art of painting (Rembrandt van Rijn) as well as science (Constantijn Huygens) flourished alongside a thriving economy.

1. The Sails are set : There is a lot of hustle and bustle on the quay. The crew are preparing fordeparture. Goodbyes are said and once the sails have been hoisted the ship sets out to sea.

2. A Visit to the Rajah of Yogyakarta: After a voyage of many months the place of destination is reached. A visit to the Radja, the king of the area around Yokyakarta, follows. The dishes and beverages and the native culture in general are very pleasant after having been on a diet of ship’s biscuit and water for such a long time.

3. The Holds have been loaded: The holds have been loaded to the brim, and the voyage home can be begin!

4. Death sails along: Life at sea is rough. not seldom did a sailor die of a tropical disease or scurvy. After a memorial service, the Captain would speak the words ‘One, two, three, in God’s name ...’ and the body, wrapped in canvas, would be committed to the sea.

5. A joyful homecoming: After many months of hardship coming home is perhaps the best part of the entire voyage. The quay is filled with people eager to give the crew a warm welcome.

Nederland is, mede door de geografische ligging, sinds lange tijd een belangrijke handelsnatie.
Eén van de eerste multinationals was de ‘Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie’ (VOC).
Het doel van de VOC was schepen naar Azië testuren om peper en specerijen te kopen en het Portugese monopolie over te nemen.
De VOC werd een succes. Het was een tijd van grote welvaart (Gouden Eeuw), waarin naast een bloeiende economie ook de schilderkunst (Rembrandt vanRijn) en de wetenschap (Constantijn Huygens) floreerden.

1. The Sails are set: Aan de kade is het een drukte van belang. De bemanning maakt het schip klaar voor vertrek. Er wordt afscheid genomen en als de zeilen gehesenzijn zetten we koers naar volle zee.

2. A Visit to the Rajah of Yogyakarta: Na een maandenlange reis wordt de bestemming bereikt. Er volgt een bezoek aan de Radja, de koning van de streek rond Yokyakarta. De spijzen, drankenen de inheemse cultuur zijn zeer aangenaam na maanden scheepsbeschuit en water.

4. Death sails along: Het leven op zeeis hard. Niet zelden vond een zeeman de dood door een tropische ziekte of scheurbuik. Na een herdenkingsdienst sprak de kapitein de woorden: ‘Eén, twee, drie in Godsnaam .....’, waarna het in zeildoek gewikkelde lichaam aan de golvenwerd toevertrouwd.

5. A joyful homecoming: Na maanden van ontberingen is het thuiskomen misschien wel het mooiste van de hele reis. De kade staat weer vol om de bemanning een warm onthaal te geven.

This stately opening work begins in the low register with a broad main theme from the low brass immediately setting the tone. Gradually other sections and registers enter and despite retaining a majestic character the rhythmic element becomes more active. This work makes truly creative use of sound, without great virtuosity or complexity, but maintains a good balance between static and dynamic elements.

Dit statige openingswerk begint in het lage register en etaleert een breed hoofdthema waarin het lage koper meteen de toon zet, gesteund door een continue slagwerkcadans. Geleidelijk komen ook andere secties en registers aan bod enwordt het ritmische element actiever, al bewaart het geheel een gedragen karakter. Het gaat om een echt klankstuk, zonder een grote virtuositeit of complexiteit, maar met een prima evenwicht tussen statische en dynamische elemeten.

Dieses majestätische Eröffnungswerk beginnt im tiefen Register und präsentiert ein breit angelegtes Hauptthema, in welchem das tiefe Blech sofort den Ton angibt, unterstützt von einer durchgehenden Kadenz in den Schlaginstrumenten. Nach und nach erscheinen andere Register und das rhythmische Element wird aktiver, wobei der majestätische Charakter jedoch erhalten bleibt. Ein Werk, das voll und ganz auf Klang aufbaut, ohne große Virtuosität oder Komplexität, jedoch mit einer perfekten Balance zwischen statischen und dynamischen Elementen.

The Swan on the Hill est sans grande difficulté technique, mais nécessite un travail approfondi de l’environnement sonore afin d’obtenir un bon équilibre entre les éléments musicaux statiques et dynamiques

Questo maestoso brano di apertura inizia su un passaggio sonoro grave e profondo dove echeggia un tema ampio e generoso, eseguito dagli ottoni gravi, su un movimento continuo delle percussioni. Poco a poco, altre sezioni della banda integrano armoniosamente lo sviluppo e completano le zone di timbro. La cellula ritmica si intensifica senza tuttavia influenzare il carattere maestoso del brano. The Swan on the Hill non pone grandi difficolt tecniche, ma richiede un lavoro profondo sulle dinamiche, al fine di ottenere un buon equilibrio tra gli elementi musicali statici e dinamici.

This flexible piece in 4 parts was written by Jacob de Haan as a ‘theme tune’ for the Yamaha teaching method seminars in Germany. The solemn and dignified hymn-like melody will add a touch ofgrandeur to any performance. Its simplicity and rich harmonies suggest overtones of Land of Hope and Glory and this would be a good item to bring a deep and uplifting sense of occasion to your concert.

Vanuit zijn didactische ervaring met het componeren van eenvoudige muziek voor variabele bezettingen gaf de Nederlandse componist Jacob de Haan in 2004 een workshop tijdens het Yamaha Bläserklassen Kongress in Oberursel (bij het DuitseFrankfurt). Op verzoek van Wolfgang Feuerborn, leider en initiator van het project, schreef Jacob de Haan speciaal voor deze seminars een hymne. Hij noemde het stuk - heel toepasselijk - The Seminar Hymn. Dit werk isleerzaam en motiverend voor jonge muzikanten - en een plezier om naar te luisteren.

Aufgrund seiner didaktischen Erfahrungen im Komponieren von leichter Musik für variable Besetzungen hielt der holländische Komponist Jacob de Haan im Rahmen des Yamaha BläserKlassen-Kongresses in Oberursel 2004 einen Lehrgang ab. Auf Wunsch von Wolfgang Feuerborn, dem Leiter und Initiator des Projekts, schrieb Jacob de Haan speziell für dieses Seminar eine Hymne. Er nannte das Stück - passenderweise - The Seminar Hymn. Dieses Werk vermittelt geschickt wertvolles Lehrmaterial für junge Musiker mit viel Motivation und Spielfreude, die sich auch aufs Publikum übertragen wird.

La Yamaha BläserKlasse est un projet développé par Yamaha en partenariat avec le système éducatif allemand. Ce concept permet d’enseigner la musique d’ensemble l’école primaire (et premier cycle secondaire). Bénéficiant d’une riche expérience dans la composition d’œuvres pédagogiques instrumentation variable, Jacob de Haan compose un hymne, spécialement pour les séminaires d’application durant lesquels les enseignants sont formés cette nouvelle manière d’apprendre la musique.
