The source of inspiration for Thailand Impressions was a trip that the composer made to the magnificent country of Thailand. The three movements reflect the many different aspects of this fascinating part of the world including Bangkok - both modern and antique, Buddhist temples and the infamous Burma railway.

One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Philip Sparke’s sumptuous arrangement of this Stephen Foster classic will make a perfect item to bring a few minutes of peace and calm tranquillity to any concert. The lush harmonies, so characteristic of Philip Sparke’s arranging, are augmented with exquisite solo figures for cornet and flugel horn. Once you have played this you will want it on every concert programme. There is a popular misconception that Stephen Collins Foster (1826—1864) found success as a song-writer writing many of his songs aiming to ‘humanise’ the black American slaves. He was a meticulous worker and sometimes spent months perfecting the lyrics of a song. His first success was Oh! Susanna (1848) and as his popularity grew he moved with his young family to New York to be near his publishers. This was not a success and Jane, his wife and Marion, his daughter, moved back to Pittsburgh in 1854. Foster wrote Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair as a result of her continued absence. Philip Sparke’s arrangement of this beautiful song will make an excellent slowinterlude in any concert.

In English-speaking countries ‘Away in a Manger’ is one of the first Christmas songs to be taught to little children. It is a moving song with simple words, which makes it easy to understand. The song is also known as ‘Luther’s Cradle Hymn’. This suggests that Martin Luther was the author of the lyrics. According to researchers, however, this is a misconception the author is unknown. In England ‘Away in a Manger’ is sung to a different melody than in the USA, for example. The ‘English’ melody was composed by W.J. Kirkpatrick. Andrew Mackereth made a touching arrangement of the ‘English’ melody, which suits the tender lyrics perfectly.

Evolution was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing brass band repertoire. The composer writes:-The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine and astrology, and in simpleterms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life. An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions: Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Evolution has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle.

This stately concert opener was originally written by Jan Van der Roost for a special event in which six respected wind orchestras (two Belgian and four Dutch) of different composition (two symphonic bands, two fanfare bands and two brass bands) were featured during six concerts. Each evening brought forth a performance by a symphonic band, a fanfare, and brass band, so that the audience could experience all three types of ensembles. This was indeed an original concept. The name, ConZEnSus, comes from a combination of the words, ‘Concert Cyclus’ (concert series) and ‘zes’ (Dutch for ‘six’). This leads to a new word, which refers to ‘consensus’. The general tenor of the cycle isthus immediately indicated. The richness of color of the various ensembles is revealed through an open and friendly atmosphere. During all six concerts (over a span of three years), ConZEnSus functioned as a permanent opening number for each orchestra. Thus the same musical story was portrayed in three different packages.

When I was approached to compose a work for brassband and church organ I already envisioned the concept I would use. It would indeed literally become a work for brassband and organ. Without the traditional solos, the organ would form an addition to the brassband orchestration as would the brassband provide an extra register for the organ. In short a homogeneous entity. The most important reason for doing this is quite simple. Since this work can only be performed in a church and because of the specific acoustics of the church, the brassband would sound in al its tone colour like an organ. By using certain registers of the organ and combining these with the brassband a wonderfulsound palette can be created. The use of complementary or contrasting tone quality is also possible. The primary theme of this composition is based on these three methods of “colouring”. As far as structure is concerned this work consists of two parts. slow fast. It is built on a number of motifs in which some behave like a consecutive canon. In the fast movement the primary motif develops into a fugue-like section. The canon and fugato are techniques frequently used in classical and contemporary organ literature. The liberal use of structure and motif has lead to the title. “Fantasy for Brassband and Organ”. Fantasy for Brassband and Organ”.

This flexible piece in 4 parts was written by Jacob de Haan as a ‘theme tune’ for the Yamaha teaching method seminars in Germany. The solemn and dignified hymn-like melody will add a touch ofgrandeur to any performance. Its simplicity and rich harmonies suggest overtones of Land of Hope and Glory and this would be a good item to bring a deep and uplifting sense of occasion to your concert.

The three sections of Movements demonstrate the concept of motion in all its orms. The March briskly gets the band going (in motion). section 2 (Sarabande) is solemn and melodious (slow motion), and the Allegro con Brio in section 3 forms an energetic conclusion (commotion) to this enchanting and instructive composition by Patrick Millstone. 1. In Motion (March) 2. Slow Motion (Sarabande) 3. Commotion (Allegro con Brio).
