I Shall Love But Thee is an occasional work in the literal sense of the word, since it was originally written on the occasion of the composer’s youngest son’s wedding. The texts, by William Shakespeare, inspired Jan Van der Roost to compose profound and appealing music, largely in the style of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and Georg Friedrich Handel (in the second part)—although no literal quotations have been used. The rather rare combination of soprano and brass band makes this piece a unique addition to the repertoire!

I Shall Love But Thee is in de letterlijke zin van het woord een gelegenheidswerk, want het werd oorspronkelijk geschreven naar aanleiding van het huwelijk van de jongste zoon van de componist. De teksten zijn van William Shakespeare: Jan Van der Roost werd erdoor ge nspireerd tot het creëren van indringende en aansprekende muziek, die in stilistisch opzicht doet denken aan Henry Purcell (in het eerste deel) en Georg Friedrich Händel (in het tweede deel), twee componisten die op teksten van Shakespeare hebben gecomponeerd ook al zijn er geen letterlijke citaten gebruikt. De vrij zeldzame combinatie van sopraan en brassband maakt dit werk een unieke aanwinst voor hetrepertoire!

I Shall Love But Thee ist ein Gelegenheitswerk im eigentlichen Sinn, denn der Komponist hat es ursprünglich aus Anlass der Hochzeit seines jüngsten Sohnes geschrieben. Die Texte stammen von William Shakespeare und haben Jan Van der Roost dazu inspiriert, eine tiefgründige und ansprechende Musik im Stil der großen Meister zu komponieren. Stilistisch erinnert sie an Henry Purcell (im ersten Teil) und an Georg Friedrich Händel (im zweiten Teil), auch wenn keine literarischen Zitate verwendet wurden. Durch die eher seltene Kombination von Sopran und Brass Band stellt das Stück eine einzigartige Bereicherung für das Repertoire dar!

I Shall Love But Thee est une « œuvre d’occasion » dans l’un des sens littéraux du mot, puisqu’elle fut écrite l’occasion du mariage du fils cadet du compositeur. Les textes de William Shakespeare ont inspiré Jan Van der Roost écrire de la musique profonde et attrayante qui, au niveau du style, nous rappelle Henry Purcell (dans la première partie) et Georg Friedrich Haendel (dans la deuxième moitié), deux compositeurs qui ont mis en musique des textes de Shakespeare, bien qu’on n’y retrouve pas de citations littérales. The piece reflects the composer's fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space in general. The title comes from a theory, formulated by Pythagoras, that the cosmos was ruled by the same laws he had discovered that govern the ratios of note frequencies of the musical scale. (‘Harmonia’ in Ancient Greek, which means scale or tuning rather than harmony - Greek music was monophonic). He also believed that these ratios corresponded to the distances of the six known planets from the sun and that the planets each produced a musical note which combined to weave a continuous heavenly melody (which, unfortunately, we humans cannot hear). In this work, these six notesform the basis of the sections MUSIC OF THE SPHERES and HARMONIA. The pieces opens with a horn solo called t = 0, a name given by some scientists to the moment of the Big Bang when time and space were created, and this is followed by a depiction of the BIG BANG itself, as the entire universe bursts out from a single point. A slower section follows called THE LONELY PLANET which is a meditation on the incredible and unlikely set of circumstances which led to the creation of the Earth as a planet that can support life, and the constant search for other civilisations elsewhere in the universe. ASTEROIDS AND SHOOTING STARS depicts both the benign and dangerous objects that are flying through space and which constantly threaten our planet, and the piece ends with THE UNKNOWN, leaving in question whether our continually expanding exploration of the universe will eventually lead to enlightenment or destruction.

Dieses Werk über die Ursprünge des Universums führt uns vom Urknall, vorbei an einsamen Planeten, Asteroiden und Sternschnuppen schließlich ins Unbekannte - die ungewisse Zukunft. La fresque Music of the Spheres (“La musique des sphères”) souligne la fascination qu’éprouve le compositeur pour les origines de l’univers. L’orchestration est proche de la musique de film. Le climat musical est ample, sonore et contrasté.

Music of the Spheres evidenza il fascino che le origini dell’universo esercitano su Philip Sparke. Il titolo proviene da una teoria del matematico greco Pitagora, secondo la quale il cosmo è retto dalle stesse leggi che governano i rapporti di frequenza tra le note della scala musicale. Questa composizione inizia con un assolo di corno chiamato t = 0, nozione che definisce il momento del big-bang. The Lonely Planet (Il pianeta solitario) è una meditazione sulle circostanze che hanno portato alla creazione della terra. Asteroids and Shooting Stars (Asteroidi e Stelle cadenti) descrive i molteplici oggetti che si muovono nello spazio e che rappresentano unrischio per il nostro pianeta. Le battute finali portano verso l’ignoto (The Unknown) sollevando una domanda la cui risposta resta in sospeso: la nostra continua avanzata nell’esplorazione dell’Universo porter un giorno alla scoperta o alla distruzione?

Scottish Dances is based on three Scottish traditionals: Cock of the North, The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond and Marie's Wedding.

I. Cock of the North's name is used for multiple things or events. For example for a locomotive to a famous, it seems, delicious liqueur, and rallies to snowboard competitions. Furthermore is Cock O' the North a nickname of a famous Duke. (The 4th Duke of Gordon).
In this composition Cock of the North (a Jig) is a traditional Scottish bagpipe tune, regularly played on tattoos by Pipe Bands. Not infrequently the drummers sing the text.

II. The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond is about a sad story that took place during an revolt against the British. In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie had to retreat. Two of his men were captured. One was convicted and executed, while the other was released. The spirit of the executed soldier would arrive in Scotland via the 'low road' (underworld) before his companion, who had still a long way to go.

III. In a Scottish wedding, after the official ceremonies, there is often danced. This is called a ceilidh. For this we use traditional Scottish music such as Marie's Wedding '.
Mid dance we go back to the church, where a lovely song in honor of the couple sounds.

Scottish Dances is gebaseerd op drie Schotse traditionals: Cock of the North, The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond en Marie's Wedding.

I. De naam Cock of the North wordt voor meerdere dingen of evenementen gebruikt. Van een beroemdelocomotief tot een, naar het schijnt, een heerlijke likeur, en van rally's tot snowboard wedstrijden. Bovendien was 'Cock O' the North' een bijnaam van een bekende hertog. (the 4th Duke of Gordon)
Het in deze compositiegebruikte Cock of the North (een Jig) is een traditioneel Schotse bagpipe tune (doedelzak liedje) wat regelmatig gespeeld wordt op taptoes door Pipebands. Niet zelden zingen de slagwerkers de tekst mee.

II. 'The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond', gaat over een triest verhaal dat zich afspeelde tijdens een opstand tegende Engelsen. In 1745 moest Bonnie Prince Charlie zich terugtrekken. Twee van zijn mannen werden gevangen genomen. Eén van hen werd veroordeeld en geexecuteerd, terwijl de ander vrijgelaten werd. De geest van de geexecuteerde soldaatzou via de 'low road' (onderwereld) eerder in Schotland aankomen dan zijn kameraad, die nog een lange ruige weg te gaan had.

Halverwege de dans gaan we nog even terug naar de kerk, waar een lieflijk lied ter ere van het bruidspaar klinkt.

This old hit has been revamped for the film Sister Act, in which Whoopi Goldberg performs the number with Deloris & the Sisters. This adaptation for brass band has been arranged by Ron Sebregts.

Im Filmklassiker Sister Act aus dem Jahr 1992 bringt Whoopi Goldberg alias Schwester Deloris mit ihrer forschen, etwas ungehobelten, aber herzlichen Art Schwung ins Leben des Klosters und der Kirchengemeinde. Ihre Botschaft, dass dem Herrn nicht nur mit Ernst und Andacht gedient werden kann, bringt der fröhliche Soultitel I Will Follow Him, der hier in einer Bearbeitung von Ron Sebregts vorliegt, sehr gut rüber.

The tune Old Hundredth is one of the best-known melodies in all Christian musical traditions and first appeared in the 1551 psalter Pseaumes Octante Trois de David, where it is used as a setting for a version of Psalm 134; it is usually attributed to the French composer Louis Bourgeois (c.1510 - c.1560). The melody was then used in 1561 by the Scots clergyman, William Kethe in Sternhold and Hopkins’ Psalter for his paraphrase of Psalm 100 - All People that on Earth do Dwell<(I>, which is still the most familiar hymn sung to this noble tune. When Tate and Brady’s New Version of the Psalms was published in 1696, the melody became know as the ‘old’ version - henceits current title. This arrangement presents three contrasting verses and is effective as a concert piece as well as an instrumental interlude as part of a church service or wedding.

De melodie van Old Hundredth is een van de bekendste in alle christelijke muziektradities, ze verscheen voor het eerst in Pseaumes Octante Trois de David uit 1551. De muziek wordt meestal toegeschreven aan de Fransecomponist Louis Bourgeois (ca.1510-ca.1560). In 1561werd de melodie gebruikt door de Schotse geestelijke William Kethe voor zijn parafrase van psalm 100. Later werd de melodie in Engeland bekend als de ‘oude’ versie - daar komt ookde huidige titel vandaan. According to his teachers, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), was not particularly gifted. His special talents were acknowledged only in 1865 when he had been working for the Ministry of Finances for some years.
In 1866 he was appointed teacher at the Conservatory and applied himself to composing. His oeuvre is fairly extensive and many of his compositions receive a high ranking on the international list of classical music, including his six symphonies, solo concertos (violin concerto and piano concertos), ballets (The Nut Cracker, Swan Lake), and his overtures (1812 and Romeo and Juliette).
In 1893 Tchaikovsky died of Cholera after drinking a glass of infectedwater.

His Slavonic March is a popular concert piece for symphonic orchestra that is still frequently performed in concert halls.
David Well arranged the theme and created a contemporary march in rock style.

Tchaikovsky once said to an unsatisfied teacher: ‘I will be a great composer within 10 years time.’

Volgens zijn leraren was Pjotr Iljitsj Tsjaikovski (1840-1893) niet bijzonder begaafd. Zijn speciale talenten werden alleen erkend in 1865, toen hij enkele jaren had gewerkt voor het ministerie van Financiën.
In 1866 werd hijbenoemd tot docent aan het Conservatorium en legde zich toe op het componeren. Zijn oeuvre is vrij uitgebreid en veel van zijn composities krijgen een hoge ranking op de internationale lijst van klassieke muziek, met inbegrip vanzijn zes symfonieën, soloconcerten (viool en piano), balletten (De Notenkraker, Het Zwanenmeer), en zijn ouvertures (1812 en Romeo en Juliette).
In 1893 is Tsjaikovski gestorven aan cholera na het drinken van een glas van besmetwater.

Zijn Slavische Mars is een populair concertwerk voor symfonie orkest.
David Well maakte een mooi arrangement van het thema en creëerde een mars in een hedendaagse rock stijl.

T the beginning of the 1980s Alison Moyet was discovered by Vince Clarke, who - in search of greater independence - had left the successful band Depeche Mode. The soulful singing style of Moyet and the electronic, innovative pop that Clarke made melded well together in the group Yazoo with hits such as Only You and Don’t Go. However, after a number of years Moyet went her own way and forged a solo career, during which she demonstrated a somewhat more traditional sound. She recorded several covers (such as The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face and That Ole Devil Called Love) but she also wrotefine songs herself, such as Love Resurrection and, of course, the expressive song AllCried Out. This arrangement by Peter Kleine Schaars does justice to the atmosphere of the original song.

Die erfolgreiche Karriere von Alison Moyet begann zu Beginn der 80er-Jahre mit der englischen Popgruppe Yazoo. Nach ein paar Jahren ging die Sängerin mit der starken Soulstimme jedoch eigene Wege und arbeitete an einer Solo-Karriere. The assignment to write a test piece for the National Brass Band Championships ended up also being a ‘test piece’ for myself as a composer.
Although being quite familiar with the Brass Band phenomenon, as a composer I still have the feeling ofbeing an outsider.
Delta Energy turned out to be a non-program composition. The Brass Band as orchestra form is depicted musically in this piece. All the specific characteristics are portrayed in varying settings. Solo passages for Euphonium,Flugelhorn and Cornet alternating with extensive tutti-passages and of course technical highlights form the ingredients for this work written in rhapsodic form.

The title “Delta Energy” is derived from a project of the N.V. NederlandseGasunie in Groningen which also contributed in making this composition possible.

Delta Energy is een spectaculair en verfrissend concertwerk van Jan Bosveld (Nijmegen, Holland).
Het beleefde haar première als testpiece (3e divisie) ter gelegenheid van de Nederlandse Brassband Kampioenschappen (2002) te Groningen.

Decomponist heeft getracht een gevarieerd speelwerk te maken waarbij de mogelijkheden van het fenomeen brassband optimaal worden benut.
Delta Energy is abstract van opzet en heeft geen programmatische inhoud. Het werk bestaat uit 5 aaneengeslotendelen welke aan elkaar worden verbonden door cadensen van solisten of secties.

Een krachtig, ritmisch getint openingsmotief brengt ons al snel bij het hoofdthema gespeeld door de cornetsectie. Dit grillige en ritmische gedeelte wordtafgesloten door een cadens van de euphonium die ons in het tweede gedeelte brengt dat wederom zeer ritmisch van karakter is met een knipoog naar de Tarantella.
De flugelcadens zorgt ervoor dat er rust in het werk komt. Dit derde deel doet onsdenken aan een deel uit de Schilderijententoonstelling van Modest Moessorgsky, niet in de laatste plaats door de lyrische euhoniumsolo.
Een cadens van de cornetsectie verplaatst ons naar het 4e deel en daarmee naar de virtuositeit van debrassband.
De energie en de actie zetten de band en publiek op scherp in een zinderend feest. De korte trombonecadens zet de zaak nog eenmaal stil om in het 5e deel Delta Energy op spectaculaire wijze te beëindigen.
Een weergaloze compositie!

Over a period of four decades Jimmy Webb (b. 1946) has written hits for a number of singers including Glen Campbell, Art Garfunkel, Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Linda Ronstadt. His songs are often epic in character and include By the Time I Get to Phoenix; Up, Up and Away; Didn’t We; Wichita Lineman and Galveston. MacArthur Park (1968) was unlike anything that had gone before it. Running at over 7 minutes, it is 2 or 3 times the length of most pop songs and has an extended orchestral interlude. Richard Harris’ seminal recording topped the music charts in Europe, while peaking at number two on the U.S. charts. Philip Sparke has made this excellentarrangement for brass band, which is sure to become a regular feature on your concert programme.

MacArthur Park van Jimmy Webb, een nummer dat uitkwam in 1968, was niet te vergelijken met alles wat daarvoor was gemaakt. Met een duur van meer dan zeven minuten is deze song twee of drie keer zo lang als de meeste popsongs,ook het orkestraal tussenspel is bijzonder. Richard Harris’ originele opname stond bovenaan in de hitparades van Europa en op nummer 2 in de Verenigde Staten. Philip Sparke schreef een fantastisch arrangement dat zowel uw muzikantenals uw publiek zal aanspreken.

Elegy I ‘Jealousy’ has been named after John Donne’s poem of the same name. This English poet (1572-1631) wrote an entire series of elegies, each with its own theme. Jealousy can trigger various emotions, ranging from disappointment, grief, or regret, to madness and anger. All these emotions have been incorporated into this composition. Jacob de Haan was inspired by three different works of art: a poem (the aforementioned poem by John Donne), a painting by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch (Jealousy in the Garden) and an old French chanson about jealousy (Je ne l’ose dire) by the sixteenth-century French composer Pierre Certon. The music refers repeatedly to thischanson - sometimes through key notes from the melody that serve as the starting point for new, isolated themes and sometimes through quotations of the original version

Elegy I ‘Jealousy’ werd genoemd naar het gelijknamige gedicht van John Donne. Jaloezie (Jealousy) roept een hele rij emoties op. Van teleurstelling, treurnis en verdriet tot boosheid en woede. Het gedicht Jealousy van Donneen ook het gelijknamige schilderij van Edvard Munch inspireerden Jacob de Haan om dit werk te componeren. En het is hem goed gelukt om alle emoties die bij jaloerse gevoelens horen muzikaal te verklanken! Een treffend concertwerkdat u niet mag missen…
