It is argued that the arpeggione (think: bowed guitar) would have been left as a trivia question for historians had Schubert not written this particular Sonata. By the time this 1824 composition was first published in 1871, the arpeggione had already fallen out of favor and out of use. Even the first publication indicated the violoncello as the viable alternative solo. The editors have gone back to the autograph, which resides at the National Library of France, together with the contemporary arrangement for violin by Diabelli, in creating this critical edition. The history of the sonata and this edition, together with performance notes and critical commentary, are included.

The three pieces From Jewish Life were composed by Swiss-American composer Ernest Bloch in 1924, the same year he took U.S. citizenship. Though clearly inspired and influenced by Jewish experience, they are purely concert pieces, and do not provide any specific liturgical significance. The first movement, Prayer, is a deeply heartfelt plea to the almighty. As Neil W Levin writes, The initial four-note motive in the minor mode, together with its elaboration in the ensuing phrases, sounds as if it might have served as the skeletal model for Max Janowski's (1912-1991) now well-known setting of the High Holyday prayer Avinu Malkenu. This prayer has special meaning in my own spiritual life, as I have been singing it since my childhood. Both Prayer and Janowski's Avinu Malkenu are cantorial in nature, to be sung with heartfelt pathos. The second movement, Supplication (the act of begging humbly), has more angst, almost a sense of urgency as a result of the rhythmic motor in the piano. The third movement, Jewish Song, evokes a quintessentially Eastern-European melancholy. Its falling motives with bent intonation might represent the pain of the Jewish experience. The works were dedicated to Dutch-American cellist Hans Kindler, a highly influential musician of his time, and founder of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. Mr. Kindler was the soloist for the world premiere of Bloch's most celebrated work, Schelomo in 1917.Though the popularity of Bloch's oeuvre has been dominated by works of Jewish connection, we should not forget that Bloch had many other stylistic periods, including Franco-Belgian, modal, serial, and even American folk. In 1927, he was awarded Musical America's composition prize in a unanimous vote, despite being regarded as an outsider by American music writers at the time. His winning work America (1928) was performed by every major orchestra and conductor in the following seasons. May we be proud of his contributions to American music. The three pieces From Jewish Life were composed by Swiss-American composer Ernest Bloch in 1924, the same year he took U.S. citizenship. As a lesson and lecture piece, Bertold Hummel's Sonatine op. 35, created in 1969, accompanied many young musicians on their way. Sold a thousand times all over the world, it is one of the composer's best-known works and has been included in the repertoire list for the 'Jugend musiziert' competition by the German Music Council. Warmth and sparkling rhythm characterize the three movements: inthe powerful maestoso, the sonority of the main theme is contrasted with a lyrical side theme; the recapitulation ends with an impulsive fugato. The second movement Elegie consists of a single soulful melody about spherical harmonies of the piano. As the highlight in the Finale vivace, playful lightness, marching rhythms and dramatic increases replace each other in quick succession; wild arpeggios lead to the end. Originally composed for violin, versions for viola and cello were already familiar. For the 50th birthday, Simrock / Boosey & Hawkespresents the work in a revised, revised edition. A repertoire enrichment for beginning instrumentalists are the first available versions for alto and tenor saxophone, which the composer made himself in the 1990s.

Eduard Putz (1911-2000) studied with Heinrich Lemacher and Hermann Schroeder at the Cologne Musikhochschule and later worked as a music teacher at the grammar school in Rheinbach near Bonn as well as a composition teacher at the Rhenish Music School in Cologne. Overcoming the boundaries between serious and entertaining music was what mattered to him which is why he wrote many works which tried to combine jazz and new music. His 'Adagietto' for violoncello and piano (1990) was discovered within the composer's estate and published for the first time. Prof. Julius Berger arranged the piece for practical playing, adding appropriate fingerings. A short performance piece with interesting harmonies and arpeggios in the piano part and expressive cantilenas in the cello part.

Jean Sibelius composed far less music for the cello than for the violin. Malinconia (op. 20) - published in 1911 but composed in 1900 under the title Fantasia - remained his only opus-numbered work exclusively for cello and piano. The Fantasia for cello and piano, an early stage of Malinconia , was premiered at a soiree in the Solemnity Hall of the University of Helsinki on 12 March 1900 and was given positive press reviews: The work, which mainly drew attention with its logical and clear structure, begins with a powerful and substantial cello solo, to which the piano responds with a glimmering series of arpeggiated chords. At the end where the instruments unite in a harmonious, deeply emotional song, the harmonic impression they create is very bright and lovely. The autograph manuscript of Fantasia shows that Sibelius omitted a larger passage of music between the present bars 24 and 25 and that he made further revisions to the work, either before the publishing process or in the proofs he read in April 1911 for Breitkopf.

Dotzauer etudes have been part of the standard repertoire in cello lessons for generations. Friedrich Dotzauer (1783-1860) was amongthe major cellists and cello pedagogues of the 19th century and knew what makes a good etude: it should deal specifically with a certain technical problem and at the same time not be monotonous, but musically appealing. The cellist of the Leipzig Gewandhaus and the Dresden Hofkapelle managed to do that in an exemplary manner. 24 Caprici in tutti tuoni Op. 35 (1816) is Dotzauer's masterpiece, wonderfully showing off the varied tone colours and playing techniques of the violoncello. Demanding etudes for lessons and performances, with beautiful melodic and harmonic ideas, some with slow expressive introductions, some with artistic arpeggios or contrapuntal polyphony. Our new edition follows the original sources and contains the original text.

Another commissioned work has Ewazen borrowing from his own The Eternal Dance of Life for a special new gift for cello and piano. The composer says it best: As a former cellist in my youth, have always loved the instrument, and have enjoyed writing for it. The work contains swirling arpeggiated gestures, a lilting compound meter and a real sense of expressivity, allowing the cello to sing with soaring lines and genuine lyricism. For advanced performers.
