In this trio, as in most of his compositions, Jost has pictures and associations with true incidents, films and novels in his mind. What inspired him to write this piece was Joseph Conrad's novel 'Heart of Darkness' in which the protagonist Marlow says about the city of Brussels: 'In a few hours I arrived in a city that always make me think of a whited sepulchre.'In 'Sepulchral City', a work commissioned to mark the tenth anniversary of the Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival, however, the title refers to Jerusalem, the city of white tombs. The topic of Jost's trio is a travel into the soul and living spirit of a city, with no physical movement being needed to find the heart of impenetrable darkness: It lies within the city walls. In this respect, 'Sepulchral City' equals a compositionally unfolded funeral bell. Even the animated middle section rather has insisting than progressive power. At the end, the only thing to do is to inhale and exhale.

Pieces for young (at heart) cellists
ISBN 9790004184745. 9 x 12 inches. German / English.
Graham Waterhouse created a little series of lovely melodies for his son, which he then successfully performed at violoncello competitions. The eight pieces can be played alone, as well as in a suite with a random sequence. The majority are dances with rhythmical characteristics that are intended to challenge the young string players. This also applies to the expanded performance techniques that are introduced and occasionally used here. The level of difficulty ranges from the first position in Montague's March up to the fourth position in Henry Hornpipe, the most difficult piece in the cycle. Originally conceived for solo voice and piano, this edition also contains an alternative version for two violoncelli.Pieces for young (at heart) cellists.

The Everlasting Voices is the perfect blend of textural variety and harmonic interest for the advanced treble ensemble. Employing a powerful text, Baas' vocal layering coupled with piano and optional cello make this compelling piece a programming must!.O sweet everlasting Voices, be still; Go to the guards of the heavenly fold And bid them wander obeying your will, Flame under flame, till Time be no more; Have you not heard that our hearts are old, That you call in birds, in wind on the hill, In shaken boughs, in tide on the shore? O sweet everlasting Voices, be still. This SSAA choral work by Jimmy Baas was comissioned by the Lumberton HS Varsity Treble Choir. The opening and closing lines of the poem, O sweet everlasting voices, be still provide the perfect bookends for two larger sections of the poem. These two sections are equally divided into verses. The opening line is used once again as a transition between the verses. The previously mentioned lines, O sweet everlasting voices, are overlapped as different layers of voices enter and sustain. A fifth and sixth voice, the cello and piano accompaniment take part in these layers as well. The words be still are very much a part of the mood each time as the everlasting voices become quiet and still. The two verses feature different voices within the SSAA choir. Verse 1, the sopranos, and verse 2 the altos. There are many moments in this piece to explore the full range and color of the SSAA choir. The piano and cello play an important part throughout, making this piece an excellent choice for any festival women's chorus.O sweet everlasting Voices, be still;Go to the guards of the heavenly foldAnd bid them wander obeying your will,Flame under flame, till Time be no more;Have you not heard that our hearts are old,That you call in birds, in wind on the hill,In shaken boughs, in tide on the shore?O sweet everlasting Voices, be still. This SSAA choral work by Jimmy Baas wascomissioned by the Lumberton HS Varsity Treble Choir. The opening and closing lines of the poem, “O sweeteverlasting voices, be still†provide the perfect bookendsfor two larger sections of the poem. The composer, whose family was severely affected by the Second World War and the Holocaust, considers his Anne Frank Suite as a “personal memorial diary and a reminder in view of the futility of warâ€. The score is prefaced by a quotation from Anne Frank: “In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heartâ€, which has impressed the composer since his youth. His three-movement suite attempts to musically reflect the emotionality and thoughtfulness of the theme, which eludes all words. The piano is treated in a classical manner and creates the emotional space for the solo cello. Playing in a high register in a cantabilestyle over long passages, the cello also astounds with sound effects, harmonics and an expressive solo cadenza in the middle of the work.

Sonata for cello and piano was written between September and October of 2010. It is made up of three movements, each of which has unique characteristics. The first, Allegro appassionato, is monothematic, although the theme itself is presented in several ways. Following a vigorous start featuring cello cadenza, the movement is developed with a lively feel, alternating lyrical fragments with other energetic ones. Its conclusion is resounding.Meanwhile, the second movement, Quasi un lamento, is introspective and fragile. A long melody is sustained by a delicate and transparent piano accompaniment, evoking once again the theme of the first movement and concluding with a Lento of descending piano harmonies while the cello follows, in octaves, with heartfelt glissando. The third movement, Scherzando-Allegro, is a light-hearted game between the piano and the cello. The main theme is repeated once again, this time with a binary time signature. The cello uses ricochet (the rebounding of notes in a bow stroke), as well as natural and artificial harmonies in quick time. The piano part unfolds completely naturally, excluding any gratuitous artifice. The piece lasts approximately 20 minutes.

Acceleration, deceleration, and the inconsistent nature of time are at the heart of Piano Trio The Chronophage by Tom Coult. Throughout the 17-minute work, cello and piano lines constantly speed up or slow down relative to one another, while the violin has only one role---to accelerate throughout. The listener feels clunky gear changes, as previously reliable demarcations of time seem unsteady, even unsafe. The trio's subtitle comes from The Corpus Clock in Cambridge, a clock that plays with exactly this perception. Completely accurate every five minutes, the clock lurches unevenly from second to second, the grinding mechanism driven by the terrifying metal insect escapement known as the Chronophage (from the Greek meaning of time-eater).
