The source of this publication was issued in London in 1745 by John Walsh Jr. Walsh s publication contains six four-movement works, originally written for violin, solo cello, a keyboard instrument and a second cello to reinforce the bass of the latter, but the role of the violin is insignificant, so these works can be regarded as pieces for cello. Of the six works, the arranger of the volume was publishing the three most suitable ones to that as cello concertos the piano part incorporates both the violin interludes and the continuo. In the cello part higher positions do occur, but they do not necessarily require use of the thumb they are playable after 4-5 years intensivestudy of the instrument. In this trio, as in most of his compositions, Jost has pictures and associations with true incidents, films and novels in his mind. What inspired him to write this piece was Joseph Conrad's novel 'Heart of Darkness' in which the protagonist Marlow says about the city of Brussels: 'In a few hours I arrived in a city that always make me think of a whited sepulchre.'In 'Sepulchral City', a work commissioned to mark the tenth anniversary of the Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival, however, the title refers to Jerusalem, the city of white tombs. The topic of Jost's trio is a travel into the soul and living spirit of a city, with no physical movement being needed to find the heart of impenetrable darkness: It lies within the city walls.In this respect, 'Sepulchral City' equals a compositionally unfolded funeral bell. Even the animated middle section rather has insisting than progressive power. At the end, the only thing to do is to inhale and exhale.

This work was composed in 2013 to a commission by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. It was first performed that year at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles, by Anssi Karttunen (cello) and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. The piece is formed in a single span lasting 20 minutes.

Slicked Back Tango was originally composed in 1995 for piano four hands and has since been written for numerous other instrumentations. The music “harks back to the time of silent movies. I was thinking of the 1920s and film star Rudolph Valentino. The title refers to his hairstyleâ€, says Kats-Chernin.

Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967) composed Adagio for violin and piano in 1905 and dedicated it to the outstanding violinist Imre Waldbauer. In 1910 Kodály made versions of the work for both viola and cello, while Norbert Duka transcribed it for double bass.
