Note by the composer: “This piece was written in 2006 (for violoncello and piano) for an exhibition dedicated to artists suffering from schizophrenia. The basis of the piece is a sequence of four chords, very simple and minimalistic. A person with schizophrenia hears voices that can be very disturbing; there is a longing for silence. I wrote this piece so that my son Alex, who suffers from the illness, could hear silence and meditation from it. It's called Blue Silence because blue is sometimes associated with healing.†Elena Kats-Chernin.

Leokadiya Kashperova (1872-1940), hitherto consigned to a footnote in musical history as Stravinsky's piano teacher, is undergoing rediscovery. A double graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatoire, she emerged as a virtuoso pianist and composer in the romantic tradition. She was associated with some of the great musicians of her day, including Mily Alexayevich Balakirev and Leopold von Auer. She performed in both Germany and the UK in the 1900s, but her career petered out after 1920. These new editions of the Cello Sonatas 1 & 2 have been broadcast and recorded, whilst new editions of her Symphony and hitherto unpublished Piano Concerto have recently been issued.

'El-Metfarnageen' is the first piece by the young Egyptian composer and percussionist Mohamed Saad Basha published by Schott Music. In the Egyptian colloquial language, 'El-Metfarnageen' refers to a person who, strongly influenced by the Western way of living, has almost forgotten his/her true origin. As a consequence, the piece's musical motifs critically examine the influence of Western culture in North Africa while at the same time emphasizing the origins of Egypt's own musical culture shaped over millennia.'El-Metfarnageen' was commissioned by the world-famous Bibliotheca Alexandrina and performed for the first time in its historic rooms.
