Raff's Cello Sonata op. 183 appeared in print in late 1873; at a time when Raff's success was at its zenith with Symphonies Nos. 3 and 5 as well as many chamber works. Little is known about the circumstances of its genesis and possible performances. Since Raff did not dedicate this sonata to any distinguished artist, unlike most of his other chamber works, it apparently lacked a drawing card for distribution. While Raff composed several well-known works for violin and piano, the present cello sonata is one of his few outstanding works for cello and piano. Incidentally, in the first edition, the score is headed for piano and cello, as was quite often the case in the 19th century, for instance also with Brahms's sonatas. This is also evident in the music: Cello and piano are equal partners that develop the musical material and are challenged both technically and artistically. This current edition contains an Urtext cello part as well as a part with markings by Claus Kanngiesser. In collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Archiv Lachen (CH)With a preface by Severin Kolb. Contains 2 cello parts.

Sonata for cello and piano was written between September and October of 2010. It is made up of three movements, each of which has unique characteristics. The first, Allegro appassionato, is monothematic, although the theme itself is presented in several ways. Following a vigorous start featuring cello cadenza, the movement is developed with a lively feel, alternating lyrical fragments with other energetic ones. Its conclusion is resounding.Meanwhile, the second movement, Quasi un lamento, is introspective and fragile. A long melody is sustained by a delicate and transparent piano accompaniment, evoking once again the theme of the first movement and concluding with a Lento of descending piano harmonies while the cello follows, in octaves, with heartfelt glissando. The third movement, Scherzando-Allegro, is a light-hearted game between the piano and the cello. The main theme is repeated once again, this time with a binary time signature. The cello uses ricochet (the rebounding of notes in a bow stroke), as well as natural and artificial harmonies in quick time. The piano part unfolds completely naturally, excluding any gratuitous artifice. The piece lasts approximately 20 minutes.

The melodies from George Gershwin's (1898-1937) musicals, from 'Porgy and Bess', from orchestral pieces like 'Rhapsody in Blue' or 'An American in Paris', we all know them! But the career of the young musician started as a pianist in a music publishing house where he was to encourage customers to buy music by playing it. Soon he began to compose music himself and caught the attention of the Broadway, which paved the way to his international career. Inspired by Frederic Chopin's 24 Preludes, he began to write his own 'Preludes' for the piano in the mid-1920s: Of the five preludes composed by him, he used two for the violin composition 'Short Story' and presented the other three at a concert on 4 December 1926. These 'Preludes' combine classical moments and jazz elements into an effective whole and can be played individually or as a little jazz sonata (fast - slow - fast). Thanks to the present arrangement, the charming miniatures are now available in a version for solo instrument and piano accompaniment.

Jean Sibelius composed far less music for the cello than for the violin. Malinconia (op. 20) - published in 1911 but composed in 1900 under the title Fantasia - remained his only opus-numbered work exclusively for cello and piano. The Fantasia for cello and piano, an early stage of Malinconia , was premiered at a soiree in the Solemnity Hall of the University of Helsinki on 12 March 1900 and was given positive press reviews: The work, which mainly drew attention with its logical and clear structure, begins with a powerful and substantial cello solo, to which the piano responds with a glimmering series of arpeggiated chords. At the end where the instruments unite in a harmonious, deeply emotional song, the harmonic impression they create is very bright and lovely. The autograph manuscript of Fantasia shows that Sibelius omitted a larger passage of music between the present bars 24 and 25 and that he made further revisions to the work, either before the publishing process or in the proofs he read in April 1911 for Breitkopf.

The Schott Student Edition presents motivational teaching repertoire in five levels, from easy to advanced. These editions feature easy-to-read printing along with tips and suggestions from highly experienced music educators. The Serenade & Valse by the relatively unknown composer Marie Dare is an attractive addition to the repertoire in the first years of study (Level 2) and can be played entirely in first position. The Gavotte op. 112 by Sebastian Lee is a multi-faceted work for intermediate students (Level 3). Musically the Gavotte offers the possibility to present different characters. The piano part is intentionally simple and is limited to a supporting accompaniment.

Tangos, like ragtimes and waltzes, are an integral part of Elena Kats-Chernin's music, always in a new and varied form. In it, the composer allusively combines her present time with the classical tradition and high art with light music. Slicked Back Tango was originally composed in 1995 for piano four hands and has since been written for numerous other instrumentations. The music “harks back to the time of silent movies. I was thinking of the 1920s and film star Rudolph Valentino. The title refers to his hairstyleâ€, says Kats-Chernin.

The composer Johanna Senfter (1879-1961) from Oppenheim studied composition with Max Reger in Leipzig. Her expressive style is characterised by polyphonic settings and late-Romantic harmony. Sonate fur Violoncello und Klavier Opus 79 was written by Johanna Senfter around 1935. But it was not before 1993 that the long forgotten cello sonata was released on CD for the first time. The current edition of the previously unpublished sonata, now presented by us, is based on the autograph kept at the library of the Cologne Hochschule fur Musik. A rewarding concert piece for advanced cellists.

Apart from the continuo realization and modifications in the sense of present-day notation carried out tacitly all other changes are listed in the footnotes, editorial additions have been put in square brackets. The bass part was supported in contemporary practice by a melody instrument. If performing with piano accompaniment, the supporting of the bass is not necessary. Ekah is the Hebrew word for Lamentations, as in the book of Lamentations in the Bible. The literal translation of this word would be How or Ah! How. When the cellist, Inbal Segev asked me to write a new piece for cello and piano, and as a part of our discussion, I decided to compose a new piece that reflected on the immense challenges that the year 2020 has presented. The hows and lamentations in this piece might be: how can there still be so much hate in the world since we are all equal and created in the image of God? How can there be such police brutality in 2020? How and why is the whole world suffering with the Coronavirus (COVID-19)? How can our mental health, cities, and communities be so desolate? We can hope, pray, and do our responsible part to make our life on this planet meaningful during these challenging times of the year 2020. — James Lee III Violoncello & Piano Duration: 6' Composed: 2020 Published by: Subito Music Publishing.

There are many composers about whom it is believed, today, that they composed conservatively, or against the taste of their time. The question is also raised, today, which extract of this large amount of effective and high-quality music, unknown for the most part, should receive our attention; which of it is worth rediscovering or re-editing. Camillo Schumann is one of the most important representatives of these composers, but his works are still largely unknown today. He was born on 10 March 1872 in Konigstein, Saxony. His musical language combines the sound world of Brahms with the grand, late-romantic Liszt School. He wrote piano parts of incredible power and virtuosity, approaching the sounds of Rachmaninoff. His wonderfully individual melodic language makes these works a valuable testimony to a composer who never had his due recognition. The cello sonatas Opp. 59 (EB 32082) and 99 (EB 32083) are the first of three works for this combination. Op. 59 was composed around 1905/06, Op. 99 followed in 1932. Nothing is known so far of the circumstances of the composition of this work, including for whom it was composed. However, it is quite evident that Schumann wrote it, like most of his works, primarily for his own concerts and befriended musicians. The extensive entries in the piano part bear witness to a considerably practical approach. Crossed-out bars, notes added or crossed out in chords as well as a number of revisions of other kinds are more the rule than the exception. The composer's own fingerings written in the piano part also underline this assumption. The present edition contains two solo-parts each. One clean Urtext-part free of any additions from the editor and a second one with bowing marks and fingerings by Maria Kliegel who recorded both sonatas for the first time with the label Naxos. Both sonatas show evident resemblance to the works of this combination by Johannes Brahms and are therefore a must have for ambitious cellists. With supplementary violoncello part marked by Maria Kliegel.

A special piece - a special story: In 2020, a renowned architect approached a composer to create a new piece of music for his daughter's wedding, which the happy father could give to the young couple as a wedding present. In earlier eras of private patronage, such a story would have been natural, but in the 21st century it is an odd story. The composition subtly alludes to the occasion: against the background of the piano, a duet of two instruments tells the story of a serene love (the piece can either be performed with a bassoon and a violoncello, or with two violoncellos). Mate Bella, who moves at home among different musical styles, shapes the song of lovers longing for each other in a way reminiscent of barcarolas sung by Venetian gondoliers.

The famous Golliwogg's Cakewalk is the final piece from Debussy's cycle Childrens Corner which consists of 6 miniatures for piano, written for his daughter in the years 1906-1908. The style corresponds to that of ragtime, a dance which was in vogue around the turn of the century. In the middle section, he parodies several times the beginning of the opera Tristan and Isolde by Richard Wagner with whom Debussy had a rather ambiguous relationship. The present arrangement now allows musicians to play the popular movement in a version for melodic instrument with accompaniment.
