The Everlasting Voices is the perfect blend of textural variety and harmonic interest for the advanced treble ensemble. Employing a powerful text, Baas' vocal layering coupled with piano and optional cello make this compelling piece a programming must!.O sweet everlasting Voices, be still; Go to the guards of the heavenly fold And bid them wander obeying your will, Flame under flame, till Time be no more; Have you not heard that our hearts are old, That you call in birds, in wind on the hill, In shaken boughs, in tide on the shore? O sweet everlasting Voices, be still. This SSAA choral work by Jimmy Baas was comissioned by the Lumberton HS Varsity Treble Choir. The opening and closing lines of the poem, O sweet everlasting voices, be still provide the perfect bookends for two larger sections of the poem. These two sections are equally divided into verses. The opening line is used once again as a transition between the verses. The previously mentioned lines, O sweet everlasting voices, are overlapped as different layers of voices enter and sustain. A fifth and sixth voice, the cello and piano accompaniment take part in these layers as well. The words be still are very much a part of the mood each time as the everlasting voices become quiet and still. The two verses feature different voices within the SSAA choir. Verse 1, the sopranos, and verse 2 the altos. There are many moments in this piece to explore the full range and color of the SSAA choir. The piano and cello play an important part throughout, making this piece an excellent choice for any festival women's chorus.O sweet everlasting Voices, be still;Go to the guards of the heavenly foldAnd bid them wander obeying your will,Flame under flame, till Time be no more;Have you not heard that our hearts are old,That you call in birds, in wind on the hill,In shaken boughs, in tide on the shore?O sweet everlasting Voices, be still. This SSAA choral work by Jimmy Baas wascomissioned by the Lumberton HS Varsity Treble Choir. The opening and closing lines of the poem, “O sweeteverlasting voices, be still†provide the perfect bookendsfor two larger sections of the poem. Aulis Sallinen (b. 1935) is one of the most famous Finnish contemporary composers. In his early instrumental works, Sallinen was still seeking to establish a style of his own. He had studied at the Sibelius Academy in the late 1950s, first with Aarre Merikanto - a composer representing a national brand of Neoclassicism - and then with Joonas Kokkonen, at that time just transitioning from Neoclassicism to dodecaphony. Twelve-tone music had won fairly widespread acceptance in contemporary Finn-ish music, and Sallinen was influenced, too. The Variations are Sallinen's first real work for the cello - an instrument that would later be one of his favourites, its warm, deep voice corres-ponding to his music's often dark undercurrent. The Variations for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 5 were composed in 1961-1962 and premiered in October 1962. The basic motif consists of a set of three descending intervals stated by the cello at the beginning: D-D flat-F, C-B-G and B flat-A-F sharp. Their use as basic material is a ref-lection of the composer's dodecaphony-oriented period, and variation of this material provides the framework for the piece. Variations for Cello and Orchestra are now published for the first time. Available are a reduction for cello and piano, study score and complete performance material with orchestra.

The composer, whose family was severely affected by the Second World War and the Holocaust, considers his Anne Frank Suite as a “personal memorial diary and a reminder in view of the futility of warâ€. The score is prefaced by a quotation from Anne Frank: “In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heartâ€, which has impressed the composer since his youth. His three-movement suite attempts to musically reflect the emotionality and thoughtfulness of the theme, which eludes all words. The piano is treated in a classical manner and creates the emotional space for the solo cello. Playing in a high register in a cantabilestyle over long passages, the cello also astounds with sound effects, harmonics and an expressive solo cadenza in the middle of the work.

Georg Goltermann (1824-1898) left a plethora of works for his instrument, including seven cello concertos which still play an important role in the cello literature of today. In addition, he composed a large number of character pieces, including romances, reveries, nocturnes and serenades. Rooted entirely in the romantic spirit of their time with regard to style, they are relatively short pieces of medium difficulty. It is not least due to its melodic and harmonic catchiness that the rather easy Reverie in G minor Op. 92/2 enjoys great popularity both in lessons and in concerts. The expression marking 'Allegro appassionato' refers to the fundamental character of the piece which demands, in particular, an expressive vibrato rich in modulation.

Beethoven wrote several works for mandolin and piano for Countess Josephine of Clary-Aldringen, who played the mandolin. Four of these works are still extant and have been arranged by Julius Berger for cello and piano.

Sonata in D minor is Szymanowski's earliest violin work and was written in 1904. In its conventional character one clearly feels the dependence on the violin sonatas of Franck ahd Brahms and the composer's desire to master the traditional, three-movement cyclic form. Sonata for violin and piano (arranged for cello by Kazimierz Wi komirski), a juvenile work, in spite of the fact that its style is still not crystallised, betrays the composer's growing interest in tone colour and foreshadows the bold and rich melodic line characteristic of Szymanowski's later works.

Brahms famously described this piece as certainly not difficult to play, and while easier than some of his other very challenging works, it is still a quality performance piece. The SONATA NO 1 is written as a solo with more of a duet feel between the cello and piano, creating a beautiful interweaving of harmony and melody. This piece written in three movements shows Brahms' influence by Bach in it's more classical and structured style. A beautiful selection to add to any cellist's repertoire.

Ekah is the Hebrew word for Lamentations, as in the book of Lamentations in the Bible. The literal translation of this word would be How or Ah! How. When the cellist, Inbal Segev asked me to write a new piece for cello and piano, and as a part of our discussion, I decided to compose a new piece that reflected on the immense challenges that the year 2020 has presented. The hows and lamentations in this piece might be: how can there still be so much hate in the world since we are all equal and created in the image of God? How can there be such police brutality in 2020? How and why is the whole world suffering with the Coronavirus (COVID-19)? How can our mental health, cities, and communities be so desolate? We can hope, pray, and do our responsible part to make our life on this planet meaningful during these challenging times of the year 2020. — James Lee III Violoncello & Piano Duration: 6' Composed: 2020 Published by: Subito Music Publishing.

There are many composers about whom it is believed, today, that they composed conservatively, or against the taste of their time. The question is also raised, today, which extract of this large amount of effective and high-quality music, unknown for the most part, should receive our attention; which of it is worth rediscovering or re-editing. Camillo Schumann is one of the most important representatives of these composers, but his works are still largely unknown today. He was born on 10 March 1872 in Konigstein, Saxony. His musical language combines the sound world of Brahms with the grand, late-romantic Liszt School. He wrote piano parts of incredible power and virtuosity, approaching the sounds of Rachmaninoff. His wonderfully individual melodic language makes these works a valuable testimony to a composer who never had his due recognition. The cello sonatas Opp. 59 (EB 32082) and 99 (EB 32083) are the first of three works for this combination. Op. 59 was composed around 1905/06, Op. 99 followed in 1932. Nothing is known so far of the circumstances of the composition of this work, including for whom it was composed. However, it is quite evident that Schumann wrote it, like most of his works, primarily for his own concerts and befriended musicians. The extensive entries in the piano part bear witness to a considerably practical approach. Crossed-out bars, notes added or crossed out in chords as well as a number of revisions of other kinds are more the rule than the exception. The composer's own fingerings written in the piano part also underline this assumption. The present edition contains two solo-parts each. One clean Urtext-part free of any additions from the editor and a second one with bowing marks and fingerings by Maria Kliegel who recorded both sonatas for the first time with the label Naxos. Both sonatas show evident resemblance to the works of this combination by Johannes Brahms and are therefore a must have for ambitious cellists. With supplementary violoncello part marked by Maria Kliegel.

“More than 20 years ago I was called upon by friends, artists, and aficionados to write about fingerings for the violoncello,†then-famous Berlin cellist Jean-Louis Duport thus opens his “Essai†from 1806, dedicated to “Professeurs de Violoncelle.†His methodology revolutionized cello technique, and the 21 etudes printed in its appendix are still regarded today as perhaps the most important set of studies for all budding cellists. Modelled after the volumes of etudes for violin, Henle is also issuing the Urtext here, together with all original fingerings and bowings, while also offering alternatives by the famous cellist and teacher Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt. This edition also offers a second cello part provided by Duport for accompaniment.

Joachim Raff's celebrated first cello concerto is only gradually being rediscovered today. This is astounding, taking into account both the quality of the composition as well as its enthusiastic reception in the past. All renowned cellists of the time performed the work, but the history of op. 193 is still more closely linked to Friedrich Grutzmacher, its commissioner, co-editor, and soloist in its world premiere, than to any other musician. Grutzmachers wish for a concerto to free us poor cellists from our situation that is becoming truly unbearable and driving us to the utmost discontent was certainly fulfilled by Raff. The extensive preface of this first Urtext-Edition documents the close collaboration between composer and interpreter, as well as performance practice of the time. The corresponding piano reduction includes not only an Urtext-solo part, but also a part with the markings by the Zurich cellist Jonas Kreienbuhl. In collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Archiv Lachen (CH).

Robert Schumann's Violoncello Concerto op. 129 can be regarded as the first great concerto for this instrument's repertoire. It is thus somewhat surprising that this work had an extremely problematic reception history at the outset.Schumann wrote the score in 1850, during his Dusseldorf years, but there was neither a concrete occasion nor a soloist for a world premiere. After its publication, more years elapsed before the world premiere. It was only towards the end of the 19th century that Schumann's Cello Concerto finally made its breakthrough as a repertoire piece. The Urtext edition is based on the original print of the parts and the piano reduction, which had still been supervised by Schumann. In addition, the autograph of the score was consulted for purposes of comparison. The internationally renowned soloist Heinrich Schiff took part in the preparation of the edition for violoncello and piano. His experiences have been incorporated into his arrangement of the solo part. With his comments, Schiff also provides valuable tips on the interpretation of the work.A key work of the romantic concerto repertoireThe piano reduction by Robert Schumann contains the unsigned solo part as well as the solo part arranged and annotated by Heinrich Schiff.
