This is a continuation of the very successful series, 'Classical Piano Trios'. As in the earlier volumes, here too the range of notes for the stringed instruments does not extend beyond the first position, but the pieces vary in difficulty and in length, the easiest are playable after two years of serious study. The varied material includes works by not only German, Russian and French composers, but also some representatives of national romanticism. Consecutive works by the same composer can be performed as a suite.

After the great success of his first Piano Trio in d minor op. 49, some five years passed before Mendelssohn set to work on a new composition for this formation. But then the c-minor Trio came into being in a relatively short period in March/April 1845 and was published around a year later. Much more sombre in character than the sibling work, this second trio is also considered much more difficult in terms of technique (above all in the piano part). Thus, it has always stood somewhat in the shadow of the earlier trio. However, chamber music aficionados generally regard it as the more mature and challenging work in terms of compositional technique. The trio, taken from the volume Mendelssohn • Piano Trios HN 957, is now available from Henle for the first time also as a practical single edition.

Acceleration, deceleration, and the inconsistent nature of time are at the heart of Piano Trio The Chronophage by Tom Coult. Throughout the 17-minute work, cello and piano lines constantly speed up or slow down relative to one another, while the violin has only one role---to accelerate throughout. The listener feels clunky gear changes, as previously reliable demarcations of time seem unsteady, even unsafe. The trio's subtitle comes from The Corpus Clock in Cambridge, a clock that plays with exactly this perception. Completely accurate every five minutes, the clock lurches unevenly from second to second, the grinding mechanism driven by the terrifying metal insect escapement known as the Chronophage (from the Greek meaning of time-eater).

This piece is concerned with the world of shaman, which I have been very interested in lately. A shaman is a person who creates a path connecting this world and the underworld. In this trio, the violin represents female, and the cello male. The instruments sing a duo as an extension of the voices of two shamans. The piano is the cosmos and the nature. Violin and piano have a 'Yin and Yang' relationship, the creation principal of the Taoism cosmos: polar opposites which compliment one another without cancelling each other out, creating perfect harmony. Trio (Op. 10) was composed c.1940 and first published in 1943. It is scored for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano. One of Frankel's earliest works, it is light and pleasing, showing how the composer was first influenced by jazz and classical chamber music before he later turned to larger symphonic works and started experimenting with serialism.
Benjamin Frankel (1906-1973) was a British composer and musician. He is best remembered for writing over one hundred film and television scores, including The Man In The White Suit and The Battle Of The Bulge, but he also wrote eight symphonies and many smaller works such as his ViolinSonata and Concerto, which were written for Max Rostal.

This volume of works by the Viennese classical and romantic composers contains only transcriptions, and only from pieces for the piano. In most cases the right hand part is played on the violin, often alternating with or responding to the cello, thus the piano part is considerably easier than the original, and therefore accessible to children not yet capable of playing the original work. The selection includes the most popular pieces by the greatest composers (Haydn, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Chopin and Grieg), such as, for instance, the second movement of the Mondschein-Sonate, and Träumerei.

In this trio, as in most of his compositions, Jost has pictures and associations with true incidents, films and novels in his mind. What inspired him to write this piece was Joseph Conrad's novel 'Heart of Darkness' in which the protagonist Marlow says about the city of Brussels: 'In a few hours I arrived in a city that always make me think of a whited sepulchre.'In 'Sepulchral City', a work commissioned to mark the tenth anniversary of the Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival, however, the title refers to Jerusalem, the city of white tombs. The topic of Jost's trio is a travel into the soul and living spirit of a city, with no physical movement being needed to find the heart of impenetrable darkness: It lies within the city walls. In this respect, 'Sepulchral City' equals a compositionally unfolded funeral bell. Even the animated middle section rather has insisting than progressive power. At the end, the only thing to do is to inhale and exhale.

“Allain Gaussin: Les céphéides, trio for violin, cello and piano - AL 30 735 For more than forty years, Allain Gaussin, fascinated by astrophysics, has found a major source of inspiration in observing the cosmos, as attest a number of works going from Vent solaire (1974) to Philae (2015), by way of L'Harmonie des sphères (2006). Ten years later, the 'Messiaen du Pays de la Meije' Festival hosted the first performance of the piano trio Les Céphéides. The musical journey enables the listener to enter a space 'just as impalpable and fragile' as that in which moves each Cepheid variable ' this star whose brightness varies over regular periods according to two elements: the diameter of the heavenly body and the temperature reading of its surface.

For Bob is arranged for Cello and Piano. First performed by Elisabeth Smalt and Kevin Volans, London 2016. Composers Note: I have no idea where this piece came from and how it is structured. But before and after I wrote it I was nagged by the question: what does the viola have to do with the piano? Did this combination evolve by unfortunate accident? The viola was perfected in the 18th century. Its natural metier is (private) chamber music. The piano on the other hand kept growing and blossomed in the 19th century as the ultimate public instrument. If the piano is to play with the viola, it has to rein back its power and pose as an accompanist. Maybe a third instrument, perhaps from the 20th century, is needed to mediate between these two very different sound worlds. So whenwe play this 'trio' with 2 instruments I invite the listener to mentally add the silent part(ner). - Kevin Volans.

Composed by Marin Marais, La Folia is a piece for cello and orchestra. Arranged by Paul Bazelaire, this edition presents the scores for cello and piano and can be played by advanced players. This melodious composition is based on?“The folies of Spain†in terms of theme and rhythms, and the arrangement was created for the Paris Conservatoire contest. While the beginning of the piece is quite slow, it has some faster parts that are more cheerful. Marin Marais (1656-1728) was a French composer and master of the viol. He wrote many pieces for the viol, some trio pieces and some orchestras.

The pianist, composer, arranger and cabaret artist Peter Ludwig is an all-round talent from Bavaria. He writes film music, chansons, chamber music, piano music, and, above all, beautiful inspired tangos bridging the gap between South America and Europe. Together with the cellist Anja Lechner, he received the award of the German Phono Academy for his CD 'Tango mortale' in the 1980s. Since then, he has not been able to get the tango out of his mind, and today he performs as a pianist of the piano trio 'Tango a trois'. The tangos for violoncello and piano are a valuable addition to the cello repertoire and also perfect for concert performances.

This Piano Trio Passacaglia is the 'junior' companion piece to my Cello Concerto Dunkle Saiten [Dark Strings], or more precisely to the concerto's large-dimensional introductory section with the indication 'Feierlich, schreitend' [solemnly, striding]. What in the Cello concerto then inescapably culminates in a catastrophe remains in this composition ostensibly largely conflict-free. This is in fact perhaps one of my most peaceful and conflict-free compositions; it consists of half an hour of almost exclusively tonal progressions. Here, passacaglia (stepping dance!) is taken literally: the step progressions themselves become the subject of the work. This also includes pausing, not being able to progress, feeling one's way, stumbling and taking compulsive steps forward. As familiar as the harmonic surface of the structure appears, for me the natural adaptation of the musical flow was new to a similar degree. This is my attempt to produce a linear tonal band (a horizontal) exclusively with the aid of harmonic - i.e. vertical - progressions.- Jorg Widmann.

Who does not know the song Guantanamera? Dating back to a tune of the Cuban musical style Guajira and a text by the national hero Jose Marti, it was used by Jose Fernandez Diaz in the 30s as a refrain to improvise on current day topics. Pete Seeger reopened the Marti original in 1963 at a concert in New York's Carnegie Hall - it became a hymn to the American trade union movement. The song has since been sung in countless versions, right up to the Rudi Voller battle song, which echoed in 2002 in the football stadiums. This issue gives you the opportunity to play the world hit with piano trio - have fun!
