Rolf Martinsson

Solohouse is an experimental architectural project by the American materialist visionary Lebbeus Woods. The project consists of architectural drawings and models of a house for one person. The work for solo cello explores the potential for 1/4 tone writing, attempting to treat micro-tonality as an extended resource of melodic composition, hence creating nuance in the treatment of linear writing. The idea of planting musical objects in musical space was something the composer wanted to explore, putting on an author's hat and investigating form on terms of dramaturgy, using repetition as a structural device. Inspired by the Solohouse, the composer thought of the cello as a space of observation from which the occupier reflects.

I - Lento II - Imposante III - Andante Programme Note In my early television remembrance I recall a broadcast with Samuel Beckett, one of the fathers of the absurd play and drama. At one time Beckett looked the viewer (the camera) in the eye and said:'What! - is the Word'. I have not since been able to forget it, obviously, having borrowed this ambiguous sentence as title for this short cello sonata. The fact that it is conceived as a unity is obvious from the fact that the two outer movements are closely related. The long, immediately recognizable melodic line which dominates the first movement appears in the third movement aswell, first in an inverted version and then almost identical to its original appearance, only shorter. In contrast, the middle movement is a fast one, constantly and intensely on the move, with many changes of pulse and meters, as well as large melodic leaps. And while the outer movements each are composed as a single melodic line, the middle movement makes extensive use of the cello as a polyphonic instrument employing lots of chords, double stops and flageolet effects. Aurora Borealis for solo cello evokes the mystery and drama of the northern lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis. The Aurora Borealis was out. It hung and moved with majesty in folds like an infinite traveler upstage in an infinite theater. In colors of rose and lavender and purple it moved and pulsed against the night, and the frost-sharpened stars shone through it. What a thing to see!... ― John Steinbeck Level of difficulty - music school student to professional Solo Violoncello Duration: 6' Composed: 2020 Published by: Todd Mason Aurora Borealis for Solo cello (Youtube):.

After Henrik Ibsen obtained sensational feedback for his verse drama Peer Gynt, he decided to arrange the text for stage performances as well. He requested incidental music from Edvard Grieg, who immediately assured Ibsen of his cooperation. In its new version, Peer Gynt was given its first performance in February 1876 and also scored a tremendous success. After a further revision of his music, Grieg compiled four of the most striking pieces into an orchestral suite in 1888, and repeated this procedure three years later for a second suite. The publication of the first complete score further boosted the already exceptional acclaim of the incidental music to Grieg's Peer Gynt, which takes its place today among the composer's most beloved works.Breitkopf is now releasing a new conductor's score to both suites, based on the proven edition of Richard Clarke, which is already accessible as a study score in the Eulenburg series. The new conductor's score to both suites is based on the proven edition of Richard Clarke, which is already accessible as a study score in the Eulenburg series.
