ColourStrings Cello ABC: Book E continues the Cello ABC series. Book E teaches the new material, the 5 di erent pentachords, using numerous folk songs and chamber music works. Teachers should choose the music that best suits their pedagogical aims and needs. The new element, the minor 2nd interval was introduced by adding the FA and TI notes. Later on these are expanded into the four types of tetrachrods (Major, Minor, Phrygian, Lydian). Melodies based on these tone sets (including folk song arrangements) help develop the students' taste and sense of musical character (which is the foundation for understanding the music of the 20th century). The precise and interesting ngerings aid their sense of pitch. The four types of tetrachords are: DO-RE-MI-FA = SO-LA-TI-DO (major) RE-MI-FA-SO = LA-TI-DO-RE (minor) MI-FA-SO-LA = TI-DO-RE-MI (Phrygian) FA-SO-LA-TI (Lydian) with three major 2nd intervals.

I - Lento II - Imposante III - Andante Programme Note In my early television remembrance I recall a broadcast with Samuel Beckett, one of the fathers of the absurd play and drama. At one time Beckett looked the viewer (the camera) in the eye and said:'What! - is the Word'. I have not since been able to forget it, obviously, having borrowed this ambiguous sentence as title for this short cello sonata. The fact that it is conceived as a unity is obvious from the fact that the two outer movements are closely related. The long, immediately recognizable melodic line which dominates the first movement appears in the third movement aswell, first in an inverted version and then almost identical to its original appearance, only shorter. In contrast, the middle movement is a fast one, constantly and intensely on the move, with many changes of pulse and meters, as well as large melodic leaps. And while the outer movements each are composed as a single melodic line, the middle movement makes extensive use of the cello as a polyphonic instrument employing lots of chords, double stops and flageolet effects. Per Norgard (2010).

Volume 1 begins with open strings and basic notation, rhythms, and bowing skills. New notes, notation, and bowing skills are added in logical progression, reinforcing both right- and left-hand technique and developing the cognition for string performance. This book introduces students to: the basic major and minor tetrachords on all four strings; essential rhythmic notation from whole notes through eighth-note patterns; left-hand techniques such as easily played double stops, left-hand pizzicato, differentiating whole and half steps; and a variety of bow techniques.
