During his tenure under Pope Urban VIII Virgilio Mazzocchi was among the most renowned musicians of Rome. He directed the Cappella Giulia in St. Peters Basilica for 17 years. He also organized the musical activities at the court of the Pope's influential nephew, Francesco Barberini. The Psalmi Vespertini, Mazzocchi's most important sacred work, were published two years after his death. This collection contains two complete vesper cycles for double choir with a basso continuo accompaniment. At the conclusion of the first vesper cycle, in the predominately festive setting of the Magnificat, Mazzocchi displays his artistry in the old and new styles by combining contrapuntal choral sections with concertante passages. The new Carus edition of this work presents a most significant and impressive document of Roman church music in the first half of the 17th century. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2720200.

This motet for double choir, based on the well-known Christmas text of Isaiah 9, 5-6, is a sample from the motets by Johann Ludwig Bach, Kappellmeister of Meiningen, which are available from Carus as a complete edition. After a more homophonic first part with many dialogs, the second part follows with an alla breve fugue that expands to a double fugue to close out the work. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3001500.

The Missa Sancti Henrici is a work of Biber's later years. It is one of his largest and most mature pieces of church music. With the skillful alternation of the stile antico and the stile moderno, as well as the contrast between Solo and Tutti, Biber attained a structure within the individual movements rich in variety. In its original architectural conception, Salzburg Cathedral had four galleries, each with its own organ, on the piers supporting the dome at the crossing. This conception created the spatial prerequisite for double- and polychoral performance tradition on the Venetian model. Biber's magnificent sacred music brought this tradition to a point of culmination in a ,,colossal style that was unique in transalpine Europe. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4067600.

Mention the key words Johann Sebastian and Magnificat, and one thinks involuntarily of his well-known Magnificat in D major BWV 243 or in E flat major BWV 243a. However, during the time of his tenure as St. Thomas Kantor, several times Bach also referred back to older settings of the Magnificat text and arranged these for his own purposes. Thus, for the first time it can be documented that in its original version the double choir Magnificat in C major BWV Anh. 30 contained in Bach's music library, which was originally handed down anonymously, was composed by Pietro Torri. Torri was the Music Director at the Court of the Bavarian House of Wittelsbach. For performance purposes in Leipzig in ca. 1742 Bach retained the substance of the work but composed additional parts for a 3rd trumpet and timpani. For the first time ever this splendid work appears at Carus in a printed edition. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3501200.
