In addition to his vast output of German poetry, Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) composed nearly 400 poems in French. His poems on roses struck me as especially charming, filled with gorgeous lyricism, deftly crafted and elegant in their imagery. These exquisite poems are primarily light, joyous and playful, and the musical settings are designed to enhance these characteristics and capture the delicate beauty and sensuousness of the poetry. Distinct melodic and harmonic materials recur throughout the cycle, especially between Rilke''s poignant 'Contre qui, rose' (set as a wistful nocturne) and his moving 'La rose complète.' The final piece, 'Dirait-on,' is composed as a tuneful chanson populaire, or folksong, that weaves together two melodic ideas first heard in fragmentary form in preceding movements. 'Les Chansons des Roses' was premiered and recorded in 1993 by Portland, Oregon ''s celebrated chamber choir, Choral Cross-Ties, conducted by Bruce Browne. The complete cycle has been widely performed since then and also recorded by the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Los Angeles Chamber Singers, Nordic Chamber Choir and tonight's performers, the Donald Brinegar Singers. This piece by Benjamin M. Culli paints a beautiful image of heaven. Arranged for SATB and piano, Culli treats the text with a lyrical tune and supportive piano accompaniment. The piece builds and modulates in the middle section, then finishes quietly in the original key. A moving selection for All Saints' Day.
A rest remains for all the weary;Arise, sad heart, and grieve no more;Though long the way, and dark and dreary,It opens to the golden shore. Before His throne the Lamb will lead you,On heav'nly pastures He will feed you,Cast off your burden, come with haste;Soon toil and strife will be unraveled,The weary way that you have traveled,Sweet is the rest that you will taste.
The Father's house has many a dwelling,And there for you a place will be.With perfect love His heart is wellingWho loved you from eternity. His precious blood the Lamb has givenThat you may share the joys of heaven,And now He calls out far and near:'You weary souls, cast off your sorrow; My light shines bright upon the morrow.Come, sweetest rest awaits you here!'
There rest and peace in endless measureWill be ours through eternity; No grief, no care, will mar our pleasure,And untold joy our lot will be.Oh, had we wings to hasten yonder—No more this sinful world to ponder—To join the glad, triumphant band!Arise, my soul, forget all sadness,For peace awaits you, joy and gladness—The perfect rest and promised land.

This Mass of Acceptance is dedicated to Bill Beck and the choir at St. Cyril's because of their unflagging support for me during my time of grief and sorrow after Phyllis, my wife of nearly 54 years passed away in March of 2011. In spite of continuing heartache that is abating over time, I have come to understand that my life must go on if for no other reason than to respect her commitment to love and affection for the many people she touched throughout her long and productive life. By continuing to write music I feel I am respecting her support for me whatever my artistic aspirations. I will continue for so long as I shall live to express my deepest sense of veneration and homage for her through music, poetry, art and wherever else this muse may lead me. -Dale Jergenson.

The title provides an important timestamp for an unprecedented year. Veteran choral composer Jay Althouse constructed this very special work in remembrance of lives lost during the pandemic. His setting of the traditional Latin text is built upon a melody inspired by nature: Near the end of my walk that day, I heard a bird singing three notes over and over again. I came home and began writing. The bird's song is the first three notes of the opening melody. Solemn, prayerful, and poignant.

Composed for the Alwinton and Holystone Church Choir near the composer's home in Northumberland, John Casken sets Christina Rossetti's In the bleak mid-winter - a poem popularised by Gustav Holts' setting of the same name for SATB choir and organ. A traditional carol based on the nativity it paints a vivid picture of the chill of winter and is ideal for choirs wishing to move away from the well-known whilst retaining an element of tradition. Constantly flowing organ lines create a sense of unease but this is uplifting music with subtle crescendos and powerful homophonic writing for the voices.

Lisa Stafford provides us this heartfelt and tender musical treatment of an anonymous inscription found in Germany near the end of World War II. This piece truly strikes a universal chord: I believe in God even when he is silent.‚ The lovely melody highlights the women in verse 1 and the men in verse 2. Verse 3, for choir a cappella, subtly changes tonality to the relative minor and is rejoined in the tonic key by the organ on the final verse.

Shiki began as a request for a short winter-themed piece for the Hamalais-Osakunnan Laulajat choir in Helsinki. It eventually grew into a four seasons-type cycle on haiku by a 20th century Japanese monk Santoka Taneda. The music of Shiki is a progression through various states of near-stasis. The main impression the composer wished to convey was the one of absolute stillness at the heart of each scene, of communion with the outer world, as if the viewer were drawing the landscape into him, and at the same time dissolving himself into it. The voices are treated texturally, as well as textually, moving on slow masses, with the soft but precisecely colored vowels of Japanese creating the basic sounds, and the sharper consonants giving them shape and definition.

The Requiem Mass in C Minor, Cherubini's first, was commissioned for the anniversary of the execution of Louis XVI by the restored French monarchy. The Requiem was highly admired by the public and critics as well as by Mendelssohn, Berlioz and Beethoven. Cherubini sets a solemn tone right from the beginning by using the lower Strings and winds only to accompany the Voices and continues to display his inventiveness with great effectiveness throughout the work. The thunder and lightning of the Dies Irae, the prayerful pianissimo sections of the Agnus Dei accompanied by ostinato, the complete lack of soloists are all remarkable elements of this historically importantwork.Luigi Cherubini was a composer, conductor, teacher, administrator and music publisher who, though born in Italy, dominated the musical world of Paris for nearly five decades. His composing life can be divided very roughly into to phases: the operatic phase during the French Revolutionary period and the equally successful religious music phase at the beginning of the Restoration afterwards. His directorship of the Paris Conservatoire strengthened its position at the peak of musical education on the Continent.

The Christmas oratorio Die Geburt Christi op. 90 was first performed in 1894 in the St. Thomas Church in Strassburg and today it has been rediscovered. It is the first of a trio of so-called church oratorios by Brahms's friend, Heinrich von Herzogenberg. It was followed by Die Passion op. 93 and Erntefeier op. 104, all of which have been published by Carus in reprints of earlier editions. With these works which are partly neo-baroque, partly late romantic choral works, Herzogenberg commits himself to a new form of the Protestant worship service characterized by a high artistic level, but still near to the congregation. Allowing the choir to be accompanied by instruments outside the closed liturgical form of the service goes back to a concept of the theologian from Strasbourg, Friedrich Spitta. Since Christmas was a good occasion for the choir to perform independently, Spitta decided to put together the text for a Christmas oratorio and to commission Herzogenberg to realize it musically.
