The title's Third Word of Creation refers to verses from Rilke's Book of Hours which indicate the fear of what other delicate experiments God might come up with after 'light' and 'man'. Schultz contradicts the text by combining it with the monolithic beginning of the First Book of Moses in the Old Testament, which is imbued with the rightness of God's actions, as well as with lines by the Persian poet Rumi in the translation by Friedrich Ruckert. The latter indicate the comforting certainty of rebirth as ahigher being up to the unfathomable spirit of God. The composer accomplishes the feat of weaving all three levels into a complex, ethereal structure in which the words nevertheless always remain clearly understandable.

This motet for mixed choir a cappella interweaves newly composed variations of Brahms' folksong In stiller Nacht with a musical setting of the Passion events from the New Testament, with the experience of the disciples staying at the garden of Gethsemane, to be precise. The musical action develops from homophonic, harmonic vocal setting and seemingly early church declamation of a chorale, with solo passages symbolizing Jesus lamenting in the presence of his sleeping disciples, to complex eight-part vocal texture. The character of a melancholy night watch remains decisive throughout.

Following the ravishing success of their opera â27,â the team of librettist Royce Vavrek and composer Ricky Ian Gordon received a commission from the Houston Grand Opera to create a Christmas opera for December 2017. The charming and moving fruit of their new collaboration is an operatic setting of the Christmas story which began as a short book by Gail Rock, later expanded for television. Using a cast of 5 principals and chorus, the 80-minute work is framed as a flashback to the childhood of a girl whose family tragedy deprived her of growing up with joy and Christmas spirit until another life-changing event miraculously transformed her life.

When Tim Sharp, Executive Director of the ACDA, offered Stucky the Brock Memorial Commission, it was decided that the text would commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, since the annual convention would take place in Dallas of that year. To that end, Stucky chose four different but pertinent texts to honor the occasion, although never referencing JFK by name. Take Him, Earth was premiered at the ACDA convention in March, 2013. Originally scored for chorus and chamber ensemble of nine instruments (available on a rental basis), Take Him, Earth is presented here in piano reduction. For advanced choirs. Duration: 13'.When Tim Sharp, Executive Director of the American Choral Directors Association, very kindlyoffered me the Raymond W. Brock Memorial Commission for 2013, he suggested that because thepremiere would take place at the national conference in Dallas in the 50th year since the assassinationof John F. Kennedy in that city, the text might refer in some way to that grim anniversary. Hesuggested, too, that I consider using a chamber ensemble or chamber orchestra to accompany thechorus.I took these suggestions to heart, but at the same time I wanted to write something universal enoughto be appropriate on other occasions, in other settings. Thus the score is dedicated to PresidentKennedy’s memory, but otherwise he is never referred to by name. Instead, I assembled a group oftexts that are associated with him in some way, but that also stand alone as a more general eulogy. As a refrain, there are a few lines from the early Christian burial hymn that begins “Take him,Earth, for cherishing†— lines that were earlier set to music by Herbert Howells in his classic motetcommissioned for Kennedy’s memorial service in 1963. The lines of Aeschylus “Drop, drop — inour sleep, upon the heart sorrow falls†from Agamemnon were quoted by Robert F. Kennedy uponthe death of Martin Luther King in April 1968. The celebrated “When he shall die, cut him out inlittle stars†from Act III of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was cited by RFK a few months after hisbrother’s murder.

Famous catchy tunes of classical instrumental music have been rearranged for four-part mixed choir in the pop, swing, rock and Latinstyles. This express transfer from the 'serious' world of the original versions into the 'more modern' genres makes us smile - not least due to the not-so-serious texts. Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, Haydn, even Beethoven: Would they have smiled too? You bet! Content text: The Quattro Stagioni-Song (Antonio Vivaldi: Violinkonzert op. 8) Siciliano Bossa Nova (J. S. Bach: Siziliano aus der Flotensonate BWV 1031) Our Little Nightmusic (W. A. Mozart: Eine kleine Nachtmusik KV 525) The Alla Turca (W. A. Mozart: Alla Turca, 3. Satz aus der Klaviersonate KV 331) Fate of Beethoven (L. van Beethoven: 5. Symphonie op. 67) Elisa's Dedication (L. van Beethoven: Fur Elise) John the Bastian (J.S. Bach) Kettledrum Song (J. Haydn).
