The extraordinarily high reputation among Handel's contemporaries of his Passion Oratorio to words by Brockes is indicated by the fact that no less eminent a musician than Johann Sebastian Bach himself made a copy of this work. Although Bach copied it without making substantial changes in it, our edition of the work brings together two of the greatest baroque composers. The Brockes Passion was - not only for the Leipzig Thomaskantor - an alternative to the betterknown Bach Passions. Score available separately - see item CA.5504800.

Although the music of the younger Haydn brother was highly regarded by his contemporaries, his music was forgotten in the 19th century and still waits to be rediscovered. One of his more well-known works is the central piece on the present CD, the German Mass Hier liegt vor deiner Majestat MH 560 (Here before thy majesty), a work which is musically the epitome of south-German/Austrian Catholicism and which to this day is still a part of church music practice in this region. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5456000.

Mendelssohn composed his first oratorio Paulus under the impression of his own revival of J. S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion in 1829. He integrated chorale settings into St. Paul, for which he was accused by his contemporaries of making a stylistic break, using an element unsuitable to church music. In spite of these reservations, during Mendelssohn's lifetime St. Paul was one of his most popular works, which received numerous performances throughout Europe. Robert Schuman praised the inextinguishable color of the instrumentation and the brilliant play with all the forms of composition. He described it as a jewel of the present.. The present edition of Herzlich lieb hab ich dich, o Herr invites us to rediscover one of the most significant cantatas before Johann Sebastian Bach. Ever since the rediscovery of Buxtehude's cantatas in the second half of the 19th century, the setting of the third verse with its special string tremolo sound effect aroused particular interest. There was mention of mystical tremors and of meditation. Contemporaries judged the cantata to be a pinnacle of North German chorale setting. Score available separately - see item CA.3604100.
