Cantata BWV 127 belongs to the cycle of chorale cantatas which Bach performed in 1724/25 in Leipzig. It bears close links to the St John Passion, which was performed on Good Friday 1725 in its second version. In formal terms and in the interpretation of the text and its orchestration, it is one of the most astonishing vocal works by Bach. The opening chorus, with its multi-layered construction, is nothing less than a preliminary version for the chorale fantasia O Mensch bewein dein Sunde gross. The aria Die Seele ruht in Jesu Handen is distinguished by its exquisite scoring: a solo oboe and the soprano form a duet, whilst the background comprises delicate chords on recorders and continuo, intended to symbolize funeral bells. A solo trumpet gives the following movement particular brilliance. The words Ich breche mit starker und helfender Hand unmistakably anticipate the chorus Sind Blitze, sind Donner in Wolken verschwunden from the St Matthew Passion. New revised edition. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3112700.

The Credo belongs to that large group of church works which Vivaldi composed in Venice between 1713 and 1717 for the Ospedale della Pieta, then his primary place of employment. The composition, conceived solely for choir and strings, is characterized by a two-layered formal design: a continuous, basic motivic idea, i.e., a constant rhythmic impulse with rapid tone repetition builds an instrumental layer, while on the other hand the writing for choir renders the text in a blocklike structure in chordal declamation. This structure will only be abandoned briefly in the concluding section of work, where the text Et vitam venturi saeculi is embedded in a concise fugue. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4000400.

The cantata Eternity, O awesome word BWV 60, which belongs to Bach's first Leipzig annual cycle and was written for the 24th Sunday after Trinity Sunday, is one of Bach's few dialog cantatas. It deals with the conflict between Dread (contralto) and Hope (tenor) in the face of death, which is already the topic of the expansive opening chorale arrangement . Using a device which was surprisingly dramatic for a Baroque church cantata, the bass joins in as a third vocal part (functioning as Vox Christi) in the penultimate movement - the recitative Der Tod bleibt doch der menschlichen Natur verhasst (Dread) - with the Bible quote Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord. This also convinces Dread and leads into the concluding chorale Es ist genug, so nimm Herr meinen Geist.. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3106000.
