This stunning new setting of Sara Teasdale's beloved poem “There Will Be Rest†is sure to become an audience favorite. Written for a cappella divisi chorus (SSAATTBB), its wide ranges and soaring lines provide a challenge even to advanced ensembles, but the resulting sound is a rich reward, well worth working for.

John Van Buren's Gloria was composed in 1996 for the Maulbronner Kammerchor, which introduced this work in Germany and on tours to Russia and Argentina. It has since also been heard in Italy, Holland and the USA. John Van Buren writes about his work: The beginning of my Gloria is initially very restrained, even cautious. It is extremely chromatic, the sound only gradually opening out to become a song of praise. The work grows in a steady crescendo until it arrives at an 8-part fortissimo sound (B major). Finally, the expression of great vitality gives place to a soprano melody which floats calmly above the choral sound, and the work dies away pianissimo.

The cross, the very instrument of death, now becomes the symbol of life. The crown, so magnificent, now becomes the symbol of how far God is willing to go to redeem us. If there is no cross, there is no crown. And so Jesus, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in Heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Jesus Christ is Lord - Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.

Jesus Reassures His Mother is a setting of medieval lyric poetry written anonymously in the 14th century. The poet recounts a vision of the young Mary rocking the infant Christ to sleep. The child requests his mother to sing a lullaby but, alas, knowing her child’s fate she is too sad to sing. Jesus tells her that all mothers worry about their children’s futures and insists that she should sing nevertheless. Mary recounts the visit of Gabriel and the events of Christ’s birth but reflects how sad it is to have delivered a child to such a fate. Jesus reassures his mother that he will be with his father in heaven where Mary will come to join Him at the end of time, there to livein eternal bliss. At this point Mary is persuaded by and echoes her child’s reassuring words, and she is joined in this by the choir (now representing us all). The vision fades away in the voice of the narrator whose loneliness and longing return. We learn that it is Christmas Day. This setting grows from the visionary mystical world inhabited by Julian of Norwich whose Revelations of Divine Love provided the inspiration for a work Anne Boyd composed in 1994. The medium has been expanded from the Song Company’s six solo voices used in the Revelations to the double motet choir of the Sydney Philharmonia who commissioned this work for their 75th anniversary. The parts of the infant Jesus, Mary, the Narrator and the angel Gabriel are taken by choir soloists: soprano, alto, tenor and bass. The work is situated in the context of Boyd ’s personal musical aesthetic which she describes as the intersection of Christian Love with Buddhist silence.

This Johnny Mercer, Harry Warren tune was premiered by jazz legend Louis Armstrong and nominated for an Academy Award in 1938. The lighted-hearted, innocently flirtatious song has since become an iconic standard. Jay's fantastic arrangement includes the opening verse, some easy scat singing, and plenty of jazz sonorities throughout. Add the rhythm section SoundPax for even more style.

In Jubilate Deo Kim André Arnesen goes back to the music to which he was introduced from a very early age as a chorister at Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway. There he sang regularly in concerts and services, and many of his favourite works come from the repertoire for choir and organ. Although the composer has not written a lot for those forces, they are perfect for the character andemotions portrayed in this piece. The joy and exuberance of the music reflects the Latin text (the opening two verses of Psalm 100: “Rejoice in God, all the earthâ€, and verses from Psalm 57: “I will sing and make musicâ€), with dancing, syncopated rhythms and a more solemn, soothing middle section. A real showstopper, made even more effective by the optional percussion (tambourine and hand drum – an extracted percussion part is included in the vocal score).

Come close and listen to a story that will change your life. A great conflict is about to be decided. This conflict has been gaining momentum since the foundation of the world and nothing can stop this war. Battle lines are being drawn that will determine the fate of the world. On one side stands the Almighty and all of the hosts of Heaven, on the other the enemy and all of the legions of hell. And in the middle -- in the very epicenter of the vicious battle -- there hangs a lone figure on a wooden structure that is stained with blood. This forsaken and condemned man has the appearance of a beaten and broken beggar. But make no mistake, He is a King. His blood is royal beyond comprehension. He knows what is at stake. He knows what is required, He knows the pain and suffering a full and irrevocable victory will cost. This is the account of events that sound like legend, that stretch the imagination beyond reason. Yet all that you will hear is absolutely and eternally true. Come close and listen to a story that occurred long ago, in a far off land, once upon a cross.

Steven Foster's 1855 tune is paired by this arranger with his own paraphrase of Psalm 126. The arrangement utilized various voicings, though predominantly SATB. Varied accompaniments lead to the third stanza that begins, “Lord, you flow as a river through dry and barren lands,†with a characteristically rippling piano part. Though the assembly can join in the refrain, this makes a solid stand-alone choir piece.Â

Zoltán Kodály's unaccompanied mixed choruses first appeared in print in 1943 as a collected volume published by the association Magyar Kórus. This collection contained twenty-five works. In 1951, the volume was released again in the author's edition, being expanded with eight new compositions, but without Elso áldozás (First Communion). Reprint editions of this collection had been distributed by Editio Musica Budapest until 1972, when a “commemorative extended edition†of the mixed choruses was issued, edited by Lajos Bárdos. Until now, reprints of this collection with forty-five compositions have been circulated. Péter Erdei carefully compared the printed edition with the manuscripts of the works preserved at the Kodály Archives. As a result of his work, in 2011 weemended a number of misprints, including those that had been inherited since the earliest print. Seventy-five years after the first release, the time has come for Kodály's collected choral works for mixed voices to appear in a completely new, expanded edition. Our collection contains six compositions that were not included in earlier editions: Jövel, Szentlélek Úristen (Come, Holy Spirit), Miatyánk (The Lord s Prayer), Miserere, Salló Pista, Semmit ne bánkódjál (Do Not Grieve), Újesztendot köszönto (A Christmas Carol). In addition, two versions - both equally authentic - are published of the work known underthe title of Naphimnusz (Canticle of the Sun), due to earlier editions; the new release comes with lyrics in Hebrew and English (Adoration), as well as Dénes Szedo s Hungarian translation (Napének [Hymn of the Sun]). This is the most complete and most authentic edition of Kodály's mixed choruses to date; it is printed in a slightly larger format than previous editions, and it contains new easily-legible music scores and an informative epilogue.

What has made this Mass rise to the top in popularity in parishes across the English-speaking world? Its adaptability. From parishes with keyboard and/or guitar and cantor to cathedrals with a large SATB choir and multiple instruments (organ, brass quartet, timpani, handbells), Mass of Wisdom has proven itself as a “Mass for the masses.†Its step-wise melodic patterns make it easy to learn without sounding musically trite in any way. Music directors agree that the through-composed Gloria is one of the most finely crafted of all the new musical settings of the prayer. That fine crafting extends to all components of this Mass, especially the acclamations sung during the Eucharistic Prayer. The multi-layered Hosannas in the Sanctus will delight the members of the choir as well as the singing assembly. This is a Mass setting that simply soars. It is a perfect setting for Ordinary Time, but music directors tell us that the Christmas and Easter seasons are made more glorious and joyful when this setting is sung, especially when the additional instrumentation is added. Dioceses and parishes that employed Mass of Wisdom as the first setting during the implementation of the new translation have found themselves returning to it time and time again. It truly has become part of the “Catholic musical DNA†across the United States and beyond.

Inspired by the much-revered spiritual tradition, this original a cappella piece recounts the biblical story of the Great Flood. On its third attempt, Noah's dove returned with an olive branch, signaling the discovery of dry land. Flexible call-and-response solos are accompanied by a humming choir in the verses, and a jubilant refrain becomes even more thrilling when a treble trio joins at the end!
