Christmas is a celebration steeped in paradox. We celebrate a Sovereign who chooses to be a subject, a Prince who dons the trappings of a peasant, a spotless Lamb who possesses the lineage of a Lion, a birth that will extinguish death and ultimately a death that will offer everlasting life. It is a spectacular story, it is an irrefutable reality. It is a love story beyond imagination. The great mystery of the incarnation is the fact that Jesus chose to come. It was the initiative of love conceived in the heart of the Father, born in the person of the Christ Child and revealed to us through His Spirit. Although the coming of the Messiah went unnoticed by the world He came to save, it was heralded by heaven's angels. On the evening of the incarnation, the lowly Judean hillside radiated with the glow of Shekinah glory. It was a night of miraculous transformation. A host of angels became a choir, a band of lowly shepherds were presented to Royalty, a trio of kings became seekers of truth, a star became a beacon, a stable became a shrine, a manger became a throne, a virgin became a mother and God became a child. Gloria in Excelsis Deo!

Commissioned by The Voices Foundation in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the ending of World War II, this most somber and dramatic piece uses texts from David Geraint Jones and William Shakespeare to chronicle the recollections and reflections of a soldier, which are not for the faint of heart. Thinking back on a more carefree past, the ââ¬Åspeakerââ¬Â assures his love that the future will again hold quiet and wonder. However, the price to be paid in between the past and the future is in blood and death. The soldier predicts poppies swaying over him as he lies freed of pain, yes, but also of passion. And he concludes, ââ¬ÅYour peace is bought with mine, if but the echo of your laughter reaches me in hell.ââ¬Â.

Johann Michael Haydn's Requiem in C minor heavily influenced W. A. Mozart's Requiem. In just two weeks Michael Haydn composed his work in December 1771, on the occasion of the death of his employer, Prince Bishop Sigismund Count Schrattenbach, who was beloved among the people and was a great patron of the arts. The work was written under the impression of personal tragedy: Haydn's only child, Aloisia Josepha, died in January 1771, before completing her first year of life. Parts of the Schrattenbach-Requiem were played together with the completed movements from his second, unfinished Requiem during his own furneral service. During the funeral service in Vienna for Joseph Haydn, parts of his younger brother's C-minor Requiem were also performed. Score available separately - see item CA.5032100.

These Three Songs of Love were commissioned by Exultate Singers and first performed on 14 February 2015 at St George's Bristol. The three texts (Clare, Yeats and McCrae) represent various moods of love, from the thrill of its first appearance and the mini death which this involves, through the devotion felt towards the beloved even if they are unaware of it, to the distant memories evoked by a return to an old haunt. The florid and expressive music is tied very closely to the words, with rich harmonies and clever counterpoint alongside homophonic passages. The songs will present a mild challenge to intermediate choirs, but they are sure to be pleasing to both singers and audiences and an excellent addition to the contemporary repertoire. Content: *First Love *Though you are in your shining days & The Cloths of Heaven *Then and Now.

Hail Lovely and Pure is a setting for a cappella chorus of a short poem from The Second Shepherds' Play, an English mystery play written in the 15th century by The Wakeï¬eld Master of Northern England. Mystery (or miracle) plays were a form of medieval drama that represented Biblical subjects such as the Creation and the Last Judgment. The text consists of the ï¬rst lines spoken by the shepherds when they entered the stable to celebrate the birth of Jesus. My brother David C. K. McClelland (1947-1976) translated this fragment from the original Middle English and made a small calligraphic version of it which I discovered among his papers. David probably intended to make a larger, more elaborate manuscript of the poem, though if he did so it has not been found.SATB Chorus, a cappella Duration: 13'30 Composed: 2011 Published by: WMC Music (BMI).

O Great Beyond was commissioned by JAM (the John Armitage Memorial) and first performed by the BBC Singers and Nicholas Cleobury on July 8th, 2016, as part of the JAM on the Marsh festival. The text is taken from The Gardener, a collection of verse by the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941). Published one year after Tagore’s Nobel Prize-winning collection of spiritual poems, Gitanjali (1912), The Gardener contains poems that were written much earlier in his career. Tagore retrospectively described this collection as the “lyrics of love and life.†The musical narrative of O Great Beyond is meant to mirror the stages of love portrayed in The Gardener, culminating in the desire for a “Beautiful End†in the final movement. —Thomas LaVoy  .
