Pepper Choplin beautifully and creatively crafted this telling of the final days of Jesusâ?? life, focusing on the meaning of His words and actions leading to the cross. With stunning melodies and a powerful orchestration by Michael Lawrence, we reflect on the feet that walked the earth, the hands that touched and healed, the voice that spoke the Word of God, and the head that bore a crown of thorns as Jesus was sacrificed. From the worshipful opener, We Behold His Glory, to the meditative and stunningly powerful path to the cross, O Sacred Journey, the importance of Christâ??s body remains the center point of this work. The final number, We Are the Body of Christ, is a benediction that can be presented immediately following the preceding number or after closing remarks from a speaker. For Christ is our head and though we are many, His Spirit will make us oneâ?¦Go now as the body of Christ..

Jesus made an astounding claim in Luke 4. When He proclaimed that He was the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy, it was more than a resume of credentials; it was a mission statement. In fact, it was a commitment - to you and to me - that there would be a place where sinners can find mercy; the afflicted can find healing; the broken can find compassion, and the outcast can find dignity. Behold the cross of Christ...it is the place where love and mercy meet. This profound spiritual theme is movingly captured by veteran arranger Marty Parks in Where Love & Mercy Meet, the latest offering from Simply Word Easter. Combining popular songs by Michael W. Smith, Bill and Gloria Gaither, and Darlene Zschech and Reuben Morgan with beloved classics, this musical features engaging worship sequences with easy-to-learn SATB choral parts and arrangements for one male and one female solos (with optional men/women unison), making it ideal for smaller choirs or those with limited rehearsal time. A well-designed accompaniment DVD is available to enhance your production, as well as an optional small-cast dramatic script by Kim Messer that will bring the themes of the musical into a powerful contemporary focus. This Easter, invite your congregation and community to come to the place where love and mercy meet - the cross of Jesus Christ.

Richard Allain presents a beautifully sombre and gentle setting of the Salve Regina for SSAATTBB chorus. Allain's close harmonies are set across a staggered texture, creating a seamless continuous halo of sound with each syllable melding into the next. The effect is developed as the density of the music builds, allowing each singer a level of metric freedom that allows a series of repeating phrases to blur into an undulating layer of sound against which the lower voices sing. A captivating and hugely atmospheric devout setting.

There is a rustic sturdiness in this refreshing arrangement. The well-known tune floats above a lower voice drone creating an engaging effect. Piano and handchimes add sparkle and texture and provide poetic context for this time-honored hymn. Score and Parts for Handbells (3-4 oct.) available as a digital download.

If this text, inspired by Martin Luther King's speech about the Montgomery march, doesn't sufficiently summon one's attention, then combining it with this musical setting will quite certainly accomplish that goal. “Truth pressed to the earth . . . Justice trampled down . . . Love nailed to a Cross . . . through these resurrections we have hope.†A piece with much gravitas. Brass quartet or quintet and timpani part is optional Tuba part is optional Horn in F can be substituted for Trombone I.

The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown of spring 2020 has affected people’s lives drastically. Gatherings have been stopped, people have been confined to their homes, and physical distancing has become the norm. Composers have responded to these changes in a multitude of ways, for me, it has resulted in the creation of music that uplifts and reconnects people. “The World†sets Archibald Lampman’s powerful poem “Sight,†the words seeming particularly poignant for our times. Working in collaboration with my vocal quartet Anchorae, we invited people from across the world to submit recordings of themselves singing a part of the piece. The resulting recording by the Anchorae Isolation Choir features submissions from three countries, bringing people together through music. —Peter Relph Watch this performance on YouTube  .

My setting of this well-known prayer is largely based on a piece of 16th-century visual art of the same name,Salvator mundi, attributed to Leonardo da Vinci. Though many artists have created similar paintings depicting Christ in this fashion, Leonardo’s is of the small minority in which the orb that Christ holds in his left hand lacks any sort of ornamentation or indeed any kind of religious symbol at all. The orb, as it appears in other depictions, is referred to as a globus cruciger (cross-bearing orb). This term does not apply in this instance, as the orb lacks a cross, existing purely as an unblemished globe, calm and serene, mirroring the expression that is present on Christ’s face. This piece should be sung in largely the same way that the painting appears on the canvas: subdued and reverent. The dynamic contrasts in measures 22–28 represent a very human supplication to Christ, but they should not be overstated or dramatic in any way. Such is the case with the entire work, it is a very introspective take on the prayer’s text, and as such it should feel quietly restrained and reflective throughout. The piece ends with four double-barred repetitions of the word “Deus,†representing the four points of the cross. Listen to The Same Stream perform Salvator Mundi from Songs of the Questioner.

Confident in its message yet humble of heart, this text speaks to our reliance on Calvary's cross and reminds us of the grace that is at the heart of our faith. The beautifully contoured tune is written in a gracious Celtic hymn style and is given nobility by dotted rhythms that punctuate the powerful text. The effective piano chords of the accompaniment contain many impressionistic color tones, giving the piece a modern sensibility. Strong!
