Mozart's magnificent unfinishedGreat Mass in C minor K. 427is impressive not only for its monumentality and musical beauty but for its fragmentary state which has fascinated scholars and performers for decades.Working together with the International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg, Barenreiter now presents a new edition of this work, reflecting the cutting edge of scholarship while doing justice to the needs of performers.High scholarly standards, the completion and reconstruction of movements: this pioneering publication incorporates all this in order to come as close as possible to the work itself:- TheKyrieandGloria, both of which survive complete in Mozart's hand, are edited in accordance with scholarly standards.- The first two sections of theCredohave been meticulously completed by the editor Ulrich Leisinger, drawing on original Mozart compositions e.g. the ariaDeh vieni non tardarfromThe Marriage of Figaroand paying attention to a stylistically appropriate and transparent sound.- TheSanctusandBenedictus(with theHosanna), which are either incomplete or survive only in secondary sources, have been reconstructed by the editor.Sections without any known sources are left out in this edition. Rounding off the publication is an extensive Foreword (Ger/Eng).The first performance of Ulrich Leisinger's new edition was given in April 2019 in the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg by the Hamburg State Philharmonic Orchestra and the ChorWerk Ruhr under the baton of Kent Nagano. The first Austrian premiere took place in Salzburg on August 2019 in the Great Hall of the Mozarteum, with Andrew Manze conducting the Salzburg Camerata to rousing applause from audience and critics alike. The C-minor Mass reconstruction by Helmut Eder on the basis of the New Mozart Edition (BA 4846) is still available: the score and performance material are on hire, the vocal score is on sale.

The Mass in C minor, K. 427, Mozart's Great Mass remaines a torso - a circumstance which is extremely regrettable, especially given the monumentality of this work. Mozart finished only the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Osanna, and Benedictus of the Mass. For two movements from the Credo he only completed sketches without instrumentation. In March 1785 Mozart arranged Kyrie and Gloria, supplemented by a tenor and a soprano aria, for the Italian oratorio Davide penitente. In his arrangement of the Mass in c minor, Richard Maunder added Creed wind and brass instruments to the Credo sketches. Score available separately - see item CA.4062000.

Famous catchy tunes of classical instrumental music have been rearranged for four-part mixed choir in the pop, swing, rock and Latinstyles. This express transfer from the 'serious' world of the original versions into the 'more modern' genres makes us smile - not least due to the not-so-serious texts. Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, Haydn, even Beethoven: Would they have smiled too? You bet! Content text: The Quattro Stagioni-Song (Antonio Vivaldi: Violinkonzert op. 8) Siciliano Bossa Nova (J. S. Bach: Siziliano aus der Flotensonate BWV 1031) Our Little Nightmusic (W. A. Mozart: Eine kleine Nachtmusik KV 525) The Alla Turca (W. A. Mozart: Alla Turca, 3. Satz aus der Klaviersonate KV 331) Fate of Beethoven (L. van Beethoven: 5. Symphonie op. 67) Elisa's Dedication (L. van Beethoven: Fur Elise) John the Bastian (J.S. Bach) Kettledrum Song (J. Haydn).

The C Minor Mass K. 427 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is a fascinating work. But to speak of the Mass is inaccurate, for basically it is no more than a musical torso, full of enigmas and problems, yet full of magnificent music. It is hardly surprising that attempts have been made to create a performable version of Mozart's fragment since the 19th century. Depending on the date of reconstruction and background of the arranger, these attempts sound quite different, and often the individual style of the respective arranger can be clearly discerned. Now Frieder Bernius and Uwe Wolf have published a new edition of the Mozart mass which attempts to produce a performing version whilst maintaining the greatest respect for the available material, and without obscuring Mozart's musical manuscript with their own contributions. The joint version by Wolf, a renowned musicologist, and Bernius, an expert in historically-informed performance practice, is based on a thorough knowledge of Mozart's compositions, his notational habits, and church music practice of Mozart's day. At the same time it fully meets the requirements of today's performance practice. As well as the paperback full score, we are publishing a high-quality clothbound full score including a Facsimile Supplement with selected reproductions of the sources. A first recording of this version, with the Kammerchor Stuttgart and the Barockorchester Stuttgart conducted by Frieder Bernius, is also available. Score available separately - see item CA.5165100.

The best-known setting of the Requiem Mass before Mozart's unfinished work is by the celebrated opera composer Niccolo Jommelli. The Missa pro defunctis was composed in 1756, during Jommelli's time as Kapellmeister at the court of the Wurttemberg Duke Carl Eugen, on the occasion of the death of the Dowager Duchess Maria Augusta. The work went on to enjoy wide circulation and numerous further performances. Jommelli composed it in the Neapolitan style, with orchestral forces of just strings and basso continuo. The simple but effective choral movements are partly contrapuntal in the stile antico, and partly with solo/tutti alternation and numerous suspended dissonances, whilst in the solo parts the opera composer can be recognized. This beautiful sounding Missa pro defunctis is now published for the first time in a critical edition. Where sections are missing in Jommelli's composition, the Appendix contains settings by another composer from his circle, Nicola Sala. * The best-known setting of the Requiem Mass before Mozart * First critical edition * Effective choral movements with numerous suspended dissonances and solo/tutti alternation * Scored for small instrumental forces of strings and organ.

The Missa brevis in C Major, for 4 vocal parts and organ, was long considered one of young Mozart's excercises in The Italian style of church music. Karl Pfannhauser, after his studies of Leopold Mozart's masses, was the first to discover that the C-major fragment had been incorporated into the latter's Missa solemnis in C Major. As Mozart was only 8 years old at the time his father wrote this mass, he cannot be deemed the composer of the fragmentary C-major mass that is listed as KV 115. The mass contains only the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo and Sanctus, the last of which breaks off in bar 9. For the present edition our aim was to draw upon Leopold's own works for the missing parts. At the age of just 20, Johann Christian Bach, the youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach, the Kantor of St. Thomas's, left behind the Lutheran musical tradition of his family: he went to Italy, converted to Catholicism there and successfully composed operas for Turin, Milan and Naples. Frequently overlooked are the Catholic Bach's exquisite church music works, almost all written in the years 1757-1760, and which had a significant influence on his time in Italy. These include large-scale Vesper settings with impressive, symphonic-style instrumental introductions, sometimes anticipating Mozartian idioms. Bach's Domine ad adjuvandum me, an immediately captivating work, was written for the opening of Vespers; it seems to be carried along by a sense of euphoric purpose and a dynamic lightheartedness which positively radiates southern European temperament. The work is published in the authoritative Stuttgart Urtext edition, based on the rediscovered Hamburg autograph manuscript. Score available separately - see item CA.3810400.

Talk about a child prodigy; Mozart composed and conducted the premiere of this piece when he was only 12 years old. It's less than two minutes long, but calls for solid choral singing from start to finish. Accompaniment available on PianoTrax 4 CD (00-35870).
