Cult favorite film Donnie Darko is perhaps most famous for its moody, introspective cover of Tears for Fears' “Mad World” by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules. “Stripped down” from its pop/rock roots, this arrangement captures the melancholy and pensive feel of this iconic tune masterfully, with the wistful cello part included in the score.

A prevailing melancholy mood is characteristic of Theophile Gautier's (1811-1872) poetry; a melancholy mood which inspired composers such as Hector Berlioz and Gabriel Faure to compose settings. Tristesse (Sadness) is taken from the 1838 collection La Comedie de la Mort (The Comedy of Death). With over 50 poems this is regarded as Gautier's major Romantic work. Although the narrator in the poem is conscious of the joy and zest for life of spring coming into bloom around him, he cannot share this: Helas! j'ai dans le coeur une tristesse affreuse. (Alas, in my heart I bear a terrible grief.). Faure's setting portrays this effect less as a dramatic sigh than a melancholic unworldliness with peaceful piano accompaniment in the minor key. This art song was originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted it to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble, without losing any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process, the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression, as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist. The songs have been recorded by the figure humaine chamber choir on the CD ... Wo die Zitronen bluhn (Carus 83.514).

This much loved text, set to the tune PICARDY, is skillfully arranged for voices, organ, and handbells by Oklahoma composer LIsa Stafford. The stark organ texture in the opening verse sets the plaintive mood and provides a foundation for the melody line as the handbells ring softly above. Verses 2 and 3 emphasize a four-part choral structure, the latter stanza written for voices alone and employing a cunning use of contrary motion between SA and TB. An organ interlude initiates a running eighth-note figure that segues into and continues through the final verse as all forces unite.

Zebulon Highben makes Psalm 46 come to life with musical text-painting that supports the dramatic shifts in mood within the psalm. A lyrical unison line sings of the trials of the world and then shifts to dynamic choral exclamations of “nations in uproar. The constancy of God as our refuge is represented in a reoccurring antiphon which can include the assembly. Ideal for Reformation Sunday and during Lent.

Everyone Sang was written for a wedding blessing at Wells Cathedral on 26th May 2007. The choir on that occasion featured many singers from the operatic world and this, combined with the emotional nature of the occasion, explains something of its ecstatic style. The poem is truly beautiful and offers much opportunity for word-setting. Opening in unison, the musical material follows the wonderful images of the poem leading to a shattering climax for everyone's voice was suddenly lifted. A warm chord emerges for the setting sun before the mood darkens slightly for the following lines before the final pages of profound peace; the singing will never be done is repeated until almost inaudible and finally left hanging in space. An excellent addition to the remembrance and war commemoration repertoire for use in concert hall or church, especially during the centenary commemorations of the First World War.
