This uptempo setting of a well-loved jazz standard invites singers and audience members to leave the bad times in the past, and welcome the good times that lie ahead! After an energetic swing statement of the melody, two short vocalese-inspired solos give way to a tender and gorgeous ballad section, which builds to a big and bold conclusion: I'm packin' my bags and singin' bye bye!.

Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen 's Four Madrigals From The Natural World for 6-12 part mixed chorus. This piece incorporates texts by Les Murray. ' FOUR MADRIGALS to texts by the Australian poet Les Murray are composed of two songs (Bats' Ultrasound and The Octave of Elephants) written for the Australian vocal group THE SONG COMPANY, and two songs (Cattle Egret and Comete) from my larger work SOUND / SIGHT, written for the Danish Radio Chamber Choir, but here arranged for six voices. The texts are pictures and situations from - or meditations over - THE NATURAL WORLD. Les Murray's way of approaching this world is not in the least sentimentalor nostalgic: the poems reveal a truebeing-out-there realism: so basically the approach is realistic, but the creating of form elevates the material to an abstractplay, a daring and exuberant poetic language. These poems asked to be set to music. I gave up old idiosyncrasies regarding descriptive music, and surrendered to the madrigal, with its special so-called madrigalisms, which entails also animal-imitations. You will hear this particulary inThe Octave of Elephants. ' - Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen.

This collection presents five Christina Rosetti poems set by Per Drud Nielsen for unaccompanied SATB choir. Had Christina Rossetti lived 40 years earlier and not written in English but in German, I am convinced that the many Lied-composers in the first half of the 19th century would have gathered around her. And in many ways I have set her poems to music in the spirit of the Lied tradition: I have made use of simple, modified strophic forms. And if you hear a loan from a well-known Schumann-Lied in one of my Rossetti-songs, you are not mistaken. - Per Drud Nielsen.

Chant des Voyelles - Incantation of Vowels (2018) for mixed choir (SSAATTBB) was premiered by Volti on May 4, 2018 at Noe Vallay Ministry in San Francisco and on May 6, 2018 at BAMPFA, in Berkeley, California.Martinaitytė encountered at the Rockefeller estate Kykuit near New York City a work by the cubist sculptor Jacques Lipchitz called Chant des Voyelles . It was titled after an Egyptian prayer composed only of vowels that was designed to subdue the forces of nature. Further research showed that many ancient traditions (Egyptians, Greeks and Tibetans) ascribed sacred, mystical and healing powers and significance to vowels. The details might vary in different traditions, yet it is clear that something miraculous happens through the very act of prolonged repetition of certain vowels - whether in the form of a mantra or prayer or as a self-healing ritual. This work experiments with subtly shifting, sometimes barely audible clouds of overtones resulting from the sustaining of certain vowels in multiple voices in a magical way.Duration: 16-17'The works of New York -based Lithuanian composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė (b. 1973) have been lauded as breathtaking and profoundly moving. Her stimulating music bristles with energy and tension and revolves often around the subject of beauty, which she calls both a guiding principle and an aesthetic measure for sonic quality.

Text: in Latin compiled from the charter of the University, and from older orations in praise of Basle by Bernhard Wyss.Publisher: Boosey & HawkesDifficulty level: 4 (for chorus)Britten's genius lifts this work above being just a worthy celebration of the 500th anniversary of the foundation of Basle University. It is tongue-in-cheek and mockingly non-academic while referring all the time to academic musical forms and formulae. It is written in two parts (everything is in the statutory Latin including the titles of the parts - Pars I and Pars II). The titles of the movements show Britten's intention to show off a wide variety of techniques. Here are some examples: Chorale/Alla Rovescio (the theme is given and responded to with the same melody upside down)/Recitativo/Tema seriale con fuga/Canone ed ostinato. There is a good deal of humour here. There are seven movements in Pars I and six in Pars II. The tenor soloist is given three florid recitatives, accompanied only by a piano, which act as bridges between other orchestrally accompanied movements. Of these the most noteworthy are the Arioso con canto popolare for soprano solo with tenors and basses who hum a student song; another terrific Britten scherzo; and a wonderfully raucous final pair of movements (Canon ed ostinato and Corale con canto) where Britten seems to be aping the Vivat Regina! cries in Parry's I was glad or encouraging the kind of noisy 'I'm from the best university' kind of student touchline shout. This has outrageously high notes for the tenors (top B) which further endorse this feeling. There are real echoes of the Spring Symphony (see separate entry) final movement here which are further underlined by the last section of the Cantata which brings in the bells, piano, huge percussion and the inevitable chorale in which the choir sings 'that a free academy may thrive in a free community, for ever the ornament and treasure of illustrious Basle'.This may not be Britten at his most soul-searching but, as always, there is plenty here to enjoy, especially if the work is not taken too seriously. It is a celebratory, occasional piece and it could be well taken up by other academic establishments celebrating big anniversaries. The chorus parts are not very difficult, though they do present challenges for the choir - not least in having tenors capable of those very high notes at the end. The Tema seriale con fuga is sinewy and needs careful tuning. It also has the subject regularly given upside down after its initial sounding by the basses. All good fun.Duration: 21 minutesPaul Spicer, Lichfield, 2011.

Jorgen Jersild's music is always marked by a timbral refinement with a certain inspiration from Cesar Franck and a persistently seamless musical timing. His early works sit in the intersection between the Danish and French traditions, whose inspirations he later synthesized into his own personal style, as can be heard in Three Romantic Songs for Chorus , composed in 1971. Jorgen Jersild (1913-2004) was a Danish composer and pedagogue. He studied in Paris and at the University of Copenhagen, before becoming a teacher at the Royal Danish Academy of Music for over thirty years. During this time he wrote several successful textbooks on solfege and musical theory.
