The piece was commissioned by Kevin Scully, Director of Creative Arts, for the Port Washington School District, New York, with special thanks to the Ed Foundation and HEARTS for their unwavering support. Performance Notes This lighthearted piece is a great way to bring multiple choirs together in harmony. It may be sung by a single SATB choir, though it is intended to be performed by multiple choirs of varying age levels. Song of the Sound was written for an all-district feeder festival piece for combined elementary, middle level, and high school choirs. Here is a suggested outline for combining multiple choirs: Rehearsal Letters A to B: Elementary choir only (two-part, Soprano, Alto) Rehearsal Letter B: add Middle Level Soprano, Alto with Elementary choir Rehearsal Letter C: Middle Level choir only Rehearsal Letter D: High School choir only Rehearsal Letter E to the end: Everyone! Song of the Sound: Running on the beach, digging in the sand, Seaweed in my toes, bucket in my hand. When I'm at the shore, way above the rest, These are all the things that I love the best. Skipping like a stone on the water, diving deep in the silvery foam, Swimming far where the land cannot hold us, where the lighthouse calls us home. Flying free above the marshes, soaring high above the sea, Where the tern and cormorant and plover call to lands we cannot see.Come let us go to the water, let us go to the singing shore: Where the gentle breezes whisper and the mighty breakers roar. We will look to the shining ocean, to the East, where the new day dawned: We will sing a song of the edge of the world and the waiting sky beyond. -Poem by Robert Bode (Hope Springs Retreat Center, Ohio. Beau soir seems to have inspired musicians to make their own arrangements - for violin, cello, saxophone quartet, or even for five-part chamber choir and piano, as in this version by Denis Rouger. Unlike the instrumental versions, this one retains Paul Bourget's text: the poetic depiction of a sunset on a mild summer evening, on which light and shade merge into one another like the rhythm and harmony in Debussy's setting. It is not an unclouded depiction, but the recognition of our own finiteness. This art song was originally composed not for chamber choir, but for solo voice and piano. Denis Rouger has carefully adapted it to suit the requirements and expressive possibilities offered by a larger ensemble, without losing the any of the qualities of the original in the process. Each part in the choir has a melodic line drawn from the harmonic and rhythmic framework. In the process, the variety and refinement of the choral language combines with an enormous flexibility in form and expression, as French melodies or German art song demand from a soloist and pianist. The songs have been recorded by the figure humaine chamber choir on the CD Kennst du das Land ... (Carus 83.495).

Vs. 2-5 Text: The First Letter of Peter: Chapter 2.
The words, Surely thou hast tasted that the Lord is good, open the anthem. This gentle and lyrical section, marked by dialogue between the sections of the choir, unfolds and eventually reaches a climax on the words precious in the sight of God. A quick, energetic and imitative middle section soon emerges to proclaim the words, Come, and let yourselves be built, as living stones, into a spiritual temple. Here the spirit of medieval music, the building stones for Western music, is invoked. After the anthem’s primary climax is reached on the words Jesus Christ, a solo soprano emerges from the choral texture to close this work with a serene Amen. The first performance of Dan Locklair’s anthem, In the sight of God took place on Sunday 4 October 2009. The occasion was Dedication Sunday, and the text was selected by John Scott from The First Letter of Peter, vv 2-5. Professor Locklair has provided us with a delightful addition to our repertoire at St Thomas. The work is grateful to sing, well written for voices, lyrical in style with a well-crafted sense of architecture and climax. In every sense it is an enjoyable piece for the choir, quite approachable, and judging from the many positive comments I heard afterwards from members of the congregation, it was very well received. -- Reflections on the premiere by John Scott, Director of Music, St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, New York, NY SATB Chorus, a cappella Duration: 4' Text: The First Letter of Peter: Chapter 2, vs. 2-5 Composed: 2009 Published by: Subito Music Publishing Minimum order quantity: 8 copies. Peter Schindler's full-length secular choral work Sonne, Mond und Sterne (Sun, Moon and Stars) narrates a love story based on old texts which are given a new interpretation through these musical settings. Some individual numbers were published in spring, and now more movements with piano accompaniment are available in print and digitally.- choral work of medium difficulty- will appeal to experienced Brahms Requiem singers as well as ambitious chamber or youth choirs with a gospel, pop or jazz background-cross-over between jazz, chanson, and chamber music Peter Schindler about Gedanken uber die Zeit:Paul Fleming was one of the most important lyric poets in German Baroque literature. He wrote his poem Gedanken uber die Zeit in his early twenties; it was first published in 1634 as an epitaph. All the nuances of the concept of time are artistically contrasted, and the motif Zeit (time) is explored and played with in a dialectical manner. The male voices begin in unison at an andante maestoso tempo, followed by a leisurely progress in homophonic writing in a slightly freer rhythm. A lively middle section follows which leads into the opening motif again in the last section. The third section contains a fugue, and the end is unison once again. And so the words are like a manifesto by the poet.

Everyone Sang was written for a wedding blessing at Wells Cathedral on 26th May 2007. The choir on that occasion featured many singers from the operatic world and this, combined with the emotional nature of the occasion, explains something of its ecstatic style. The poem is truly beautiful and offers much opportunity for word-setting. Opening in unison, the musical material follows the wonderful images of the poem leading to a shattering climax for everyone's voice was suddenly lifted. A warm chord emerges for the setting sun before the mood darkens slightly for the following lines before the final pages of profound peace; the singing will never be done is repeated until almost inaudible and finally left hanging in space. An excellent addition to the remembrance and war commemoration repertoire for use in concert hall or church, especially during the centenary commemorations of the First World War.

What has made this Mass rise to the top in popularity in parishes across the English-speaking world? Its adaptability. From parishes with keyboard and/or guitar and cantor to cathedrals with a large SATB choir and multiple instruments (organ, brass quartet, timpani, handbells), Mass of Wisdom has proven itself as a “Mass for the masses.†Its step-wise melodic patterns make it easy to learn without sounding musically trite in any way. Music directors agree that the through-composed Gloria is one of the most finely crafted of all the new musical settings of the prayer. That fine crafting extends to all components of this Mass, especially the acclamations sung during the Eucharistic Prayer. The multi-layered Hosannas in the Sanctus will delight the members of the choir as well as the singing assembly. This is a Mass setting that simply soars. It is a perfect setting for Ordinary Time, but music directors tell us that the Christmas and Easter seasons are made more glorious and joyful when this setting is sung, especially when the additional instrumentation is added. Dioceses and parishes that employed Mass of Wisdom as the first setting during the implementation of the new translation have found themselves returning to it time and time again. It truly has become part of the “Catholic musical DNA†across the United States and beyond.

Imagine a mountain scene with shifting, mysterious, awesome, misty fog. This is the music you might expect to hear. Vocal forces unfold in varying ways between unison and full choir, phrases frequently echo as if calling back from across the valley. Overall, the music rises from the mist, crescendos into full sunlight and confidence, and fades again into the mist. The score envisions a three-manual organ for quick changes in tone color. The Violin part is optional.
