Interestingly, Ayres combines the Latin text of the hymn with his translation here: in the style of a free motet-like cantus firmus, he interprets the Latin text impressively in music, making use of glissandi, wide leaps and unison twelve-tone linear construction for the dramatic second verse with its deceptive vision of night. He places the motet sections after the translated text, but quite simply with the Gregorian cantus firmus and in the style of medieval organum, however with interesting, diatonically written dissonant sounds. This rewarding piece is challenging, but well worth singing in a concert or church service.

Psalm 100 was co-commissioned by the Texas Tech University Choir and the Iowa State Singers, and written with the skills of these two choirs in mind. It is a concise and hope-filled composition which seeks to fuse the craft and savor of polyphonic style from centuries past with an unmistakably modern style. The opening line “Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth” is joyfully sung in Latin, creating bookends at the beginning and end of the piece. The rest of the words are set in English and the music traverses through rhythmic and cascading textures to highlight the words and express their meaning.

French composer, Jean Gilles (1668-1705) received his musical training as a choirboy in Aix-en-Provence. His substantial works are entirely religious, Mass for the Dead being no exception. Gilles catalogue comprises a significant amount of choral work. His choral composing style often alternate passages sung by soloists and the chorus, as is the case in Mass for the Dead. His musical style was influenced by Andre Campra, a leading Opera composer of the day who Gilles succeeded as music master at the Cathedral of Saint Etienne in Toulouse.
