Evening Waterfall comes from a cycle of eleven a cappella choral pieces derived from Early Moon, a collection of poetry by Carl Sandburg. The images in these simple, direct lyrics have a depth and resonance that all but cry outfor musical expression. Evening Waterfall is one of the easiest, certainly the most diatonic, of the Early Moon pieces. Imagine yourself, or perhaps, your childhood self, sitting in a tree or lying on the grass in the gloaming ofa summer's evening. The sounds of birds, the feel of wind on your skin, the sight of early stars: all seem to conspire to give you a name...to call you by your real name. But such knowledge--a kind of certainty about one's selfand place--is ephemeral. It cannot be willed to appear, or to stay. We are left alone, wondering what was the name you called me? and why did you go so soon?

For SATB (with divisions) unaccompanied The text for this part-song is a deftly chosen selection of lines from Keats' Ode to a Nightingale. Jackson's setting features many of his stylistic hallmarks: glissandi, melismas, aleatoric patterns, and solo lines that float above the texture. Highly attractive and suitable for summer concerts.

For SATB and flute, with optional piano Wales, Our Land was composed during late summer 2002 in response to a commission from the Welsh Heritage Program at Green Mountain College, Vermont. This lilting, beautiful choral work sets text by an unknown Welsh-American slate quarryman which speaks of the poet's love of his country of origin, perhaps, even, his longing to return. It is this sense of longing for the homeland (in Welsh, hiraeth) which infuses the composition. The work is sung in English but the words Wales, our land, may be substituted for the three recurring Welsh words, Cymru, ein gwlad.

1. The Native Land of Light (for mixed chorus, SATB) 2. Come lift me up (for mixed chorus, SATB -) -) the second movement may be performed by a children's chorus or by the female voices (SSA) from a mixed chorus Programme Note From my very first aquaintance with these Andersen poems, I was deeply moved by the simple, almost naive, yet evocative imagery, with which Andersen realized his visions, images like: The Melody of the Heart, The Poem of Beauty, A Spiritual Hindustan, Fly, Death, over the Sea of Time, fly to Eternal Summer. Along with this childishness Hans Christian Andersen's poetry encompasses enormous - almost Willim Blake-ish - cosmic visions, in theinterpolations between e.g. reaching the Heaven as opposed to you'll find it in a Rosebud, or the juxtaposition of Everyday Life and Eternal Poetry - which become one. Thus the music came to life in my immediate encounter with these words, which almost sang themselves into my Musical Furnace - if you will. Per Norgard.

With a duration of about 10 minutes, Schubert's Magnificat D 486 in C major is one of the more concise settings of the well-known Marian canticles, originally for the service of Vespers. It was composed in late summer 1815, and is therefore probably one of a series of church music works Schubert wrote in his youth for Lichtenthal Parish Church. The work requires a large-scale orchestra with strings, woodwind, and brass. The four-part choir contrasts with four soloists; this quartet sings the peaceful middle section of the three-section work. For the Carus edition Schubert's own autograph manuscript of his Magnificat was consulted again for the first time since 1888. Until 1989 this had been thought to be lost. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.7005300.
