The Gloria in Excelsis was written by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford for the coronation of HM King George V on 22 June 1911. It was an occasion of some note in the annals of British music, for Elgar's Coronation March and Parry's grand festival Te Deum were also heard for the first time that day. In addition, there was music by Thomas Tallis, Orlando Gibbons and Sir John Stainer, as well as by the Master of the King's Music and organist of St George's Chapel, Windsor, Sir Walter Parratt. It was published the following year as part of Stanford's Opus 128, the Festal Communion Service for voices and orchestra, which was also made available with the accompaniment arranged by the composer for organ. However, such was the popularity of the Gloria, a magnificent and wholly representative example of Stanford's genius for church music, that it soon became popular as a separate piece, either with organ or orchestral accompaniment, and it was included in the orders of service for the coronations of HM King George VI on 12 May 1937 and HM Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953. Orchestral material is available on hire (ref. HL189).

Bach was not able to use the Weimar Advent cantata Argre dich, o Seele, nicht BWV 186a in Leipzig, as there was no performance of church music there between the 1st Sunday of Advent and Christmas. Bach expanded and revised the cantata during his first year in Leipzig and performed it for the first time in its new form on the 7th Sunday after Trinity 1723. Only a wordbook survives from the original Weimar form of the work. Starting from the Weimar wordbook and Bach's Leipzig score, Diethard Hellmann has created a reconstruction of Bach's sole known cantata for the 3rd Sunday of Advent. Bach's Leipzig version of the cantata is available separately (Carus 31.186/50). Score available separately - see item CA.3118600.

For many choral singers Jesu, meine Freude is not just a motet by Bach, but the motet par excellence. Bach's motets as a whole have to be described as exceptional works, but even amongst these this is an exceptional work which is out of the ordinary not only in terms of its length. The formal conception, with its alternating chorale and Bible verses in 11 sections in a symmetrical structure, is also unique. The motet was very probably composed for a funeral, but no further details about this are known. By comparison, there are clear indications that the motet, as we now know it, was probably not composed in one go, but was composed over a long period of time. Score available separately - see item CA.3122700.

Georg Kreisler - that's sharp, profoundly dark humor! The Singphoniker have arranged Georg Kreisler's most famous songs for male ensemble and recorded on CD. The corresponding sheet music for mixed choir SATB with piano accompaniment was published by Schott Music (Georg Kreisler - Lieder und Chansons, ED 22737). In addition to this, individual editions of all songs from the sheet music album are available: It is loaded to the summer party in the garden, you spend a good time with food, drink and pleasant company. However, this is supplemented shortly thereafter by several hungry tigers, whereupon the host sits at the end of the piece again alone on his terraceand sips with relish on his glass of wine. What a (tiger) party!

Although all that survives of Bach's “St. Mark Passion†is Picander's libretto, virtually all the arias and choruses can be reconstructed from “parody†versions. The original recitatives and turbae , however, are probably lost forever. Rather than rewriting these numbers “in Bachs's styleâ€, Gomme has added passages from Reinhard Keiser's setting of the Passion (a setting highly esteemed by Bach, who performed it several times), thereby allowing this lost work to be performed in its entirety. A detailed preface sheds further light on this unique reconstruction based on the New Bach Edition.

At the age of just 20, Johann Christian Bach, the youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach, the Kantor of St. Thomas's, left behind the Lutheran musical tradition of his family: he went to Italy, converted to Catholicism there and successfully composed operas for Turin, Milan and Naples. Frequently overlooked are the Catholic Bach's exquisite church music works, almost all written in the years 1757-1760, and which had a significant influence on his time in Italy. These include large-scale Vesper settings with impressive, symphonic-style instrumental introductions, sometimes anticipating Mozartian idioms. Bach's Domine ad adjuvandum me, an immediately captivating work, was written for the opening of Vespers; it seems to be carried along by a sense of euphoric purpose and a dynamic lightheartedness which positively radiates southern European temperament. The work is published in the authoritative Stuttgart Urtext edition, based on the rediscovered Hamburg autograph manuscript. Score available separately - see item CA.3810400.

Performance Material on Hire[Solo: SAATB - Str - Bc]Thanks to its patron the Duke Francesco II, Modena became a capital city worldwide for the oratorio genre: renowned maestro di cappella in Ferrara, also Bassani wished to offer to the Duke his own work, setting aside for him the summit of his melodic and dramaturgical inventiveness.According to the documents that we have, the performance of Giona was Bassani's debut at the court of Francesco II. Born in Padua around 1650, the composer carried out the main part of his activities in Ferrara, where he was organist (probably from 1667), and maestro di cappella at the Accademia della Morte (from 1683), and subsequently also at the Cathedral (from 1686); he also became a member of the Accademia Filarmonica of Bologna (in 1677) and was committed to Alessandro II Pico, Duke of Mirandola and Marquis of Concordia. In 1712 he moved to Bergamo, where he was maestro di cappella at S. Maria Maggiore; he died there on 1st October 1716. Before his commission in Modena, the <> - as he was often called at that time - had already printed seven instrumental and vocal works as well as a few operas and oratorios.

Asked to contribute a carol to the already rich Finnish Christmas repertoire, music I've sung myself for many years, I was very aware of the things that mark the season for my adopted countrymen: peace, stillness, the cold landscape and home. When I came across Ester Ahokainen's gentle poem, so focused around these images, it seemed like providence. The resulting song is modest and warmly modal, departing only a little from Finnish tradition: a lingering dissonance here, a moment of quiet sentiment held slightly longer expected there. Like the words, the music opens outward in thanks at the end. Aattoilta was composed for the Helsinki Chamber Choir Christmas CD recording, and is dedicated to them.
