There is a lot to be said for the argument that the oratorio Wacht! Euch zum Streit gefasset macht, which has been handed down anonymously, is actually the only surviving Abendmusik from Dieterich Buxtehude and that he composed this work, also known as Das Jungste Gericht, for St. Mary's Church in Lubeck, where it was probably performed around 1683. For the first time this full-length work, with its richly contrasting style and dramatic action, is made accessible for performance in its original form. Ton Koopman reconstructed the parts which were missing from the source. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3601900.

This volume of the Lasso Complete Edition was first published in 1900, apparently under unusual time pressure which resulted in a great number of sometimes harmless, and sometimes serious errors, as the editor now writes in his preface, looking back retrospectively. In this respect, the new edition which still modestly calls itself a second printing takes on a particular relevance. The newly engraved and carefully edited musical section is supplemented with extensive texts, many facsimile illustrations, a comprehensive Critical Report and three Appendices in which further pieces are included for which Lassos authorship is practically beyond doubt.

Volume 3 of the Complete Edition contains the Mass in A minor op. 197, which was the last work Rheinberger ever composed. The Mass was left unfinished, since he died while working on it. Only the Kyrie, Gloria and the Credo, through the et resurrexit were completed. However the remainder of the Credo has been preserved in the form of sketches. These are published in the present edition for the first time. In addition, the sketches were carefully completed and prepared for performance by the editor. This version is published in the appendix of this volume.

I am grateful for the opportunity to introduce this new collection. The one-word title, Onward! is a call anyone can respond to, at any age. To quote Scottish singer Sir Harry Lauder, we can all 'keep right on to the end of the road'. Most of the hymns were written between 2012 and 2015, some of which are hymn-style versions of biblical psalms or significant portions of a psalm, or in response to a verse of scripture. Some older texts have also been included, paired here for the first time with recently crafted tunes.
This collection also includes a previously unpublished song I co-wrote with my wife, Susan Heafield, a United Methodist pastor and musician. Praise Partners, our joint musical venture, has released two collections: We Can Be Messengers (Ref PP001) and Tell the Good News! (Ref PP003), both distributed by Stainer & Bell.

This cycle of carols, to the poetry of Christina Rossetti, was assembled piecemeal over a number of years, gradually acquiring a larger dramatic and harmonic arch shape as new settings were added. I was particularly attracted to Rossetti's conflation of the dark, fallow winter landscape with that of the soul waiting for salvation. The cycle traces the long nights of watchfulness before Christmas, with the great event constantly deferred, only glimpsed periodically in different visions before the music turns inward again to contemplation. The opening carol embodies this spirit, with passages of diffuse, roving harmony interspersed with meditative, lyrical pedals, calling out the night watch and dreaming of a far-off summer of the spirit. Earth Grown Old is a kind of double carol, setting two complete poems, their lines at first presented separately as a still, expectant chorale and a jubilant dance, then progressively interwoven toward a fervent climax before once again receding into quiet. In the bleak mid-winter, which sets a highly compressed version of Rossetti's original poem, presents an enfeebled landscape frozen in time, in dire need of deliverance. A gentle melody weaves its way through static drones, broken by an angels' chorus announcing the joy to come. Love Came Down at Christmas ends the waiting, with its gently falling, overlapping lines building to a final revelation, the mystery of Christmas at last made real.
