This stirring text from Psalm 65 speaks to the wonders of God's creation and can be used throughout the year for general praise. Daniel Nelson brings us a versatile setting - the soprano solo may also be sung by a small section, and the accompaniment may be played on organ or piano.

Vs. 2-5 Text: The First Letter of Peter: Chapter 2.
The words, Surely thou hast tasted that the Lord is good, open the anthem. This gentle and lyrical section, marked by dialogue between the sections of the choir, unfolds and eventually reaches a climax on the words precious in the sight of God. A quick, energetic and imitative middle section soon emerges to proclaim the words, Come, and let yourselves be built, as living stones, into a spiritual temple. Here the spirit of medieval music, the building stones for Western music, is invoked. After the anthem’s primary climax is reached on the words Jesus Christ, a solo soprano emerges from the choral texture to close this work with a serene Amen. The first performance of Dan Locklair’s anthem, In the sight of God took place on Sunday 4 October 2009. The occasion was Dedication Sunday, and the text was selected by John Scott from The First Letter of Peter, vv 2-5. Professor Locklair has provided us with a delightful addition to our repertoire at St Thomas. The work is grateful to sing, well written for voices, lyrical in style with a well-crafted sense of architecture and climax. In every sense it is an enjoyable piece for the choir, quite approachable, and judging from the many positive comments I heard afterwards from members of the congregation, it was very well received. -- Reflections on the premiere by John Scott, Director of Music, St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, New York, NY SATB Chorus, a cappella Duration: 4' Text: The First Letter of Peter: Chapter 2, vs. 2-5 Composed: 2009 Published by: Subito Music Publishing Minimum order quantity: 8 copies. Commissioned by King’s Chapel, Boston, Massachusetts, in celebration of its 325th anniversary, this longer a cappella work uses a text assembled and adapted from various Biblical passages. From the composer's introduction: The anthem begins grandly with words from Psalm 89 celebrating God’s all-encompassing faithfulness and love. An alleluia refrain follows and returns several times throughout the work. However, it is not a majestic, Handelian alleluia, but rather one of inward passion and fervent introspection. The next section begins joyously with the familiar prophesy from Zechariah; it is followed by several brief Gospel scenes from the life of Jesus. After another alleluia, words of blessing from Psalm 103 are set vigorously before the work closes with a final alleluia. Michael Larkin's gentle anthem of comfort is based on Isaiah 43:1 - 4. The luscious choral textures are supported by a decorative piano accompaniment, making this an accessible piece for choirs of all abilities. The text appears in Lutheran Service Book's Three-Year Lectionary, Series C, as the Old Testament Reading for the Baptism of Our Lord. The piece also makes a wonderful anthem for baptisms and confirmations.
Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you.I have called you by your name, and you are Mine.Do not be afraid, for you are Mine.
When you pass through deep waters the waves will not cover you. When you pass through the fire the flames will not touch you.The flames will not touch you.Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you.I have called you by your name, and you are Mine. For I am the Lord your God; you are precious in My sight.
I love you with a perfect love.I love you with a perfect love, a perfect love.

“We are, inescapably, filled with Ruah, the Holy Spirit, from our first breath to our last. As Paul reminds the early church in Romans 8:9 ‘you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you.’ Paul is reminding us that we are filled with the Ruah of God and so should choose to live accordingly.†                                  – Ian Callanan (from the Introduction)  Drawing on the rich tradition of composer Ian Callanan’s musical background Ruah: Mass of the Breath of God is filled with Celtic themes and motifs. With the exception of the Our Father, the entire Mass is composed in the key of D, the key in which traditional Irish instruments are tuned, making the setting as accessible as possible. The recording models the sound of full Celtic instrumentation, though the setting is just as effective when simple accompaniment is used.  Ruah utilizes the Eucharistic Prayer for Children, yet the choice is by no means meant to be limiting. This is a setting composed with the entire assembly in mind, encouraging all to take a deep breath, then sing with the Ruah of God.

Short motet commissioned by St DominicÂ’s Sixth Form College, Harrow-on-the-Hill, UK, to celebrate its 40th anniversary. MacMillan chose a text which is entirely appropriate to young people about to be let loose on the world to fulfil their potential: 'Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire'. But where another composer might have made this a fanfare MacMillan writes with the gentleness of sincerity. The music is very straightforward and in wanting a solo soprano line he outlines all the ways this can be achieved: soloist, group of sopranos, or all the sopranos if the altos can be split into two. The choir repeats the mantra text above throughout the motet, while the soprano solo line is given the prayer which follows. Only at the very end do they all join together in the words 'Jesus, love, Jesus, love' with a lovely E major ending.

I finished Psalm 23 Dominus regit me (The Lord Is My Shepherd), which inspired me musically, in 2013. This prayer of praise, being a radical act of trust in God, as Pope Benedict XVI once said, complements Credo in unum Deum. I was particularly moved by the personal tone of the Psalm author and by the landscape of life symbols that he painted. The psalmist, describing ancient nomads, compares God to a shepherd taking care of his flock. It is a hopeful metaphor of a journey in the future with kind and loving God as a guide - 'Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me.' By interpreting the text with music, I wanted to avoid emotional directness, and to present the 'trust' in a contemplative way, as if it were a kind of a prayer - meditation. -Marcel Chyrzynski, translated by Monika Rokicka.
