The Editor
Gerd-Peter Munden is one of the most creative German church-musicians today. From 1992 to 1999 he worked as the cantor in Minden, where he also directed the music school for choristers. From 1999 he has been the Cathedral-Cantor at the Braunschweig Cathedral and the director of the cathedral school for choristers. He is the initiator and artistic director of a successful school project throughout Germany encouraging youngsters to sing.

Well-known in his day as one of the most important contributors to East's Whole Book of Psalms (1592), Farmer was in the service of the Earl of Oxford who, more than any other nobleman, established the professional Elizabethan theatre. In the year that Burbidge opened the Globe Theatre, these 18 madrigals (the most famous is probably Fair Phyllis) gave the composer an attractive place in the history of English music.

â??Tonight I Dance Aloneâ? for double choir a cappella consists of three poignant episodes from the life of an old man. We encounter him before his wedding, before celebrating his wedding anniversary and now as an elderly widower who says to his grandson:

â??Soon we will dance in the God-light,
My love and I.
Soon will the moon be ours again,
And the endless shining stars
In the halls of heaven.
Soon, my love, very soon;
But tonight, one last time,
Tonight I dance alone.�

The libretto and the descriptive music are deeply moving and constitute an ideal partnership. This is MÃ¥rten Jansson's first collaboration with the well-known librettist Charles Anthony Silvestri. The piece provides a well-worth challenge for ambitious choirs.

It was world-premiered by the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus under the baton of Philip Barnes on 1 October 2017 in Saint Louis, MO (USA)

In the opening liner notes he tells us that “the poem for the work is a meditation on time's ceaseless flow, elusiveness, ravages, and gifts.” Scored for mixed divisi chorus with piano or strings, “the musical setting divides roughly into three parts, moving from a sense of mystery and wonder, to chaos, and finally folding into prayer before fading away to complete silence.” Try it with your advanced ensemble.
