With its traditional forms and proven compositional models, its original ideas, which are sometimes marked by a folk- or folksong-like melodic character, and with its harmonic richness, Dvorak's D major Mass serves in its liturgical context to express the worship of God. The Mass is characterized by lyrical meditation rather than by dramatic immediacy. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4065300.

He who seeks a moving and lyrical work with rewarding roles for the choir could do no better than to choose Rheinberger's Stern von Bethlehem. In nine scenes (Expectation, The shepherds, The appearance of the angels, The Star, etc.) the Christmas story is lyrically portrayed. Songlike and pastoral choruses, a heartfelt soprano part and finally, the exotic, charming procession of the Wisemen through the desert have insured this work an increasing popularity. It was written in 1890 to a libretto by Rheinberger's wife Fanny. On account of their similar scoring, this work can be easily combined for a performance with Mendelssohn's Vom Himmel hoch or Die Geburt Christi. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5016400.

As with many cantatas by Homilius Kommt, frohe Volker, herzu, for the 4th Sunday after Epiphany, is notable for its unusual formal structure, with two choral movements in a cantata of only three movements. The generally festive, thankful character of the work, without references to the Gospel for a particular Sunday, makes this cantata, characterized by its singable melodies, a work which can be used on many Sundays throughout the church year. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3722200.

A special charm of the mass is the fact that it dispenses with soloists. In this mass, exemplary for Cherubini's church music is the richness of color in the treatment of the orchestra, as well as in the choral parts, and the expressiveness of the dynamic nuances. During Mendelssohns years of study with Zelter, the arrangement of chorales already played an important role, and he continued to be occupied with the protestant chorale throughout his symphonic and oratorical work. The break Bach's works in connection with the reperformance of the St. Matthew Passion led to a series of cantatas based on well-known chorale melodies for choir, instruments, and sometimes also for soloists. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4018500.

The Missa Sti Bernardi von Offida (1796) stands at the beginning of Joseph Haydn's late works. The Mass earned its nickname because in the Sanctus Haydn quoted the then well-known sacred hymn Heilig, heilig, heilig. The text of the music for this critical edition presents the work with the complete scoring for winds, including the clarinets and horns missing in the autograph score and the first edition. The optional horn parts are contained in the appendix and as part of the performance material. However, these parts cannot be dispensed with if we wish to fully re-create the Mass within the context of Eisenstadt. Score available separately - see item CA.4060800.

Great Baroque church music full of color and powerful imagery! Sing to the Lord a new song! Sing, rejoice and praise his holy name with the trumpets and cornetts! And nature shall join in, the seas shall rage, and the whole world and the rushing waters rejoice. This is such an ideal text for Telemann: The voices rejoice and praise together with the horns, harp, and trombones; and the choir and instruments make the sea roar, the earthquake tremble and the rivers and mountains exult. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3914000.

Gottfried August Homilius belongs to the last generation of composers of the 18th century who, in addition to the popular Passion oratorios, continued to write oratorio Passions using biblical texts. From his pen a Passion for each of the four Gospels has survived. With sensitive arias, unusal orchestral sound and expressive turba choruses Homilius translated the traditional Passion to his times. It was surely not a coincidence that in Hamburg Carl Philipp Emanuel Bachr resorted primarily to the Passions of Homilius, especially the St. Mark Passion, which he first performed in an abridged version in 1770 and whose music he employed in 14 of his 21 pasticcio Passions. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3711000.
