First critical edition. Together with Debussy, Ravel, and Dukas, Lili Boulanger was one of the most important representatives of impressionism. Despite her short life of just 24 years, she developed a distinctive personal style, and composed a huge variety of works including songs, piano music, operatic scenes, and choral music, all with great inventiveness. The Hymne au soleil (Hymn to the sun) for mixed choir, alto solo, and piano, was written in 1912 to a poem by Casimir Delavigne. In ecstatic layers of chords the sun is acclaimed; through its power it brings the colors of the earth to light anew. The edition contains both the original French text, with a singable English translation underlaid.

Few things are as tranquil as snowfall lit by the silvery moon. An evocative original text captures all the nuances of just such a moment, while the subtle movement of rich chords conveys a deep sense of wonder. In the stillness, . . . 'neath the moonlight, . . . one can hear the falling snow.

Reflecting the psalm text, the composer Matsushita constantly finds new ways of expressing the praise of God. In the swinging rhythm of the 6/8 meter, with its dotted rhythms full of brio and binary pulse in counterpoint, with flashing dissonances through the almost oriental use of chromatic intervals, with sharply juxtaposed bitonal chords, and with the consonant-rich text, rapidly sung, the composer achieves an impressive, virtuoso showpiece which accomplished choirs can use to show off the full range of their abilities. Along the way Matsushita never writes unnecessarily complicated music, but music which is always based on his own practical experience as a choral director. In a rondo-like form he finds a parallel for the repetitions of unceasing praise. Matsushita sets the text syllabically throughout, but uses its tonal colors to give character to the individual sections. For example, the fanfare-like opening motif alternates with a crescendo section, which draws its energy from the contrast between declamatory vocal parts over a pedal point in diminished and augmented leaps of a third, fourth and fifth. Voice range: S: c' - b'' / A: asdeg - e'' / T: cdeg - gis' / B: F- e'.

This mass setting was commissioned by the Friends of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and first performed on Ascension Sunday, 1994. Suitable for both church and concert use, the music is both lyrical and dramatic. The ââ¬ÅBenedictusââ¬Â is for SATB divisi and begins with a short 6/8 declamation, then moves into a section where the rhythmic idea is set in a sort of off-the-beat fashion, with all parts divisi playing against each other. A unison section with the off-the-beat motif follows. A majestic ââ¬ÅHosannaââ¬Â follows. The ââ¬ÅAgnus Deiââ¬Â is set in a rubato triple meter in a homophonic style with close chords (also divisi.) At the ââ¬Åmiserere,ââ¬Â the choir 1/choir 2 call and response motif from the ââ¬ÅGloriaââ¬Â returns. That same motif continues into the ââ¬Ådona nobis pacem,ââ¬Â as the movement (and the entire Mass) ends with a long decrescendo into a quiet call, ââ¬ÅPacem.ââ¬Â Duration 7:33.

An expert choral director as well as a highly regarded composer, Ronald Corp has written unaccompanied SATB settings of three famous medieval carol texts, Myn Lyking, The Virgin's Cradle Hymn (Dormi Jesu) and Quem Pastores Laudavere. The idiom is modern yet accessible, with an ear for stylish harmony that includes both modal progressions and colourful added chords, embroidered in some rich yet untaxing divisi writing. The carols may be performed as separate items or as a group, the first two being cradle songs for the Nativity, the third also suited to the celebration of Epiphany on 6 Janaury. Ronald Corp is Founder and Artistic Director of the New London Orchestra and New London Children's Choir, and Musical Director of the London Chorus and Highgate Choral Society.

* giving the affect of an a cappella beginning, the organ pedal point gives subtle support to the unison choir * harmony added in the organ first and then in the choir, leading to the climax of the first verse, He brings my wandering spirit back. * central verse about the shades of death is set in the minor, with vocal parts in a low range and minor seventh chords adding harmonic color in the accompaniment * returning to the major key and the dynamic highpoint of the anthem, the final verse then concludes with the opening pedal point, a solo organ line on the flute celeste and the choir singing on one pitch, a child at home.
