In this vocal quartet for four female voices and piano, Schubert sets a text from the odes of Ewald Christian von Kleist to music, the first four stanzas of his 17-stanza poem hymn. According to tradition, Schubert had written it for the singer Anna Frohlich. It was first performed on 8 March 1827 in the Vienna Musical Society and published posthumously as op. 133 in 1839.

The appealing songs on this album come from a writer who has a deep concern for justice and peace issues within the Christian church. The popular singing group Bread for the Journey adds their globally-flavored, infectiously joyful arrangements.
