This Celtic-inspired original is an exceptional testament to music, a powerful tool for human expression. Compelling lyrics come from the unique perspective of song itself, 'I am the spark that glows in you . . . the voice that grows in you . . . the hope that springs in you . . . the truth that rings in you. A lilting 6/8 meter and sweeping choral lines garner an epic effect and create an impressive opener, closer, or concert theme.

This sincere goodbye song is especially well conceived for developing 2-part singers. The tuneful, memorable melody is so easy to learn, and harmonies are smartly achieved with independent counterlines or a comfortable distance between notes for those just learning to sing in parts. A delicate piano part provides consistent support throughout. In the sunshine, in the rain, you were always true. A perfect choice at the end of a year.

A piano accompaniment that suggests the gentle rocking of a boat at sea sets the scene for this fanciful nighttime adventure, featuring a text adapted from a traditional nursery rhyme. With a melody built around a minor triad, it's a clear introduction to minor tonality. A couple of cues allow for optional three-part harmony at the end.

Taken from a collection of medieval folktales, the Hansel and Gretel libretto was based on an adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. The story features two quick-witted and capable children—a brother and sister who face many difficult times, including hunger and abandonment. Looking for food to eat, the children get lost in the forest and wake up only to meet more danger in disguise. In the happy ending, Hansel and Gretel are found in the forest by their parents. All together, they sing thanks and praise, expressing joy and gratitude for their good fortune. The ancient story of Hansel and Gretel is a fairy tale with true relevance in the world today. About the Series: Doreen Rao, 2019 Robert Shaw Award recipient, launches her culturally inclusive choral series, Global Encounters for Young Voices, featuring accessible treble- and mixed-voice works for developing choirs.

Sponsored by the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, this folk song is from a collection of songs native to the area. ââ¬ÅTengoââ¬Â translates as ââ¬ÅI haveââ¬Â but what the song is really saying is ââ¬ÅI have plenty.ââ¬Â It is a playful children's folk song which teases a neighbor in sharing the animals' ââ¬ÅI haveââ¬Â and what they produce, compared to the neighbor who has nothing. Judith Herrington has arranged it delightfully for 2-part voices with an entertaining piano accompaniment.

A folk-infused ballad celebrating the miracle of Hanukkah. Originally recorded by 90s pop sensation Lisa Loeb, this reflective change-of-pace choral features a rhythmic yet mellow accompaniment and straightforward but expressive vocal parts. Whether you perform with the guitar-inspired piano part, the optional SoundTrax CD, or a folk ensemble of your own, this is truly a special touch for holiday concerts.Because of changes in our school's schedule and the taking away of the music requirement in 7th and 8th grade, our choir numbers have dropped significantly. Searching for music that has educational value and that the choir will sound good on (we know that's important for the parents and faculty) I came across Light arranged by Andy Beck. This quickly became a favorite of my choir! The kids are excited to rehearse it every day and the sound they are achieving fits the folk-like feel of the piece. We are using the 2-Part version. Being 7th and 8th graders, of my nine boys, three are unchanged voices (singing alto as written) and my other six are in varying stages of voice change. Those six are bouncing back and forth between alto and soprano parts, singing them down an octave. Thank you for providing a great piece for the holiday season!Matt AlbrechtChoir DirectorCopley-Fairlawn Middle School

This darling little charmer reads like step-by-step instructions for assembling a jigsaw puzzle. Andy's writing provides the perfect lesson plan to teach part-singing: Part II sings an eight-bar melody, Part I sings their complementary eight bars, the two combine, we add some simple parallel harmony on the refrain, and voilà ! Teachers will thoroughly appreciate the easy-to-play piano part and compact vocal ranges (no one sings higher or lower than a D). In a surprise, not-so-hidden message, the lyrics explain that the pieces are scattered, not broken, and though they have come apart, when they fit back together, we'll have a wonderful work of art. It's a double metaphor about points of view, or voice parts, coming together.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep. The iconic Robert Frost poem is set to a familiar British folk tune, and the result is pure beauty. The vocal scoring is strophic in nature, beginning in unison and continuing with slight variation and color on succeeding verses. A lovely modulation lifts the emotional effect for the last verse.

This playful piece is perfect for the beginning of the school year. Charming lyrics, penned by a 7-year-old student, capture the joy of autumn. A unison verse swirls into simple call-and-response punctuated by a bridge in beginning 2-part harmony. A cheerful key change tosses the leaves higher into the air before tapering to a quiet I love fall leaves ending.
