A carefully crafted, clearly written choral work. For two-part choir with assembly in mind, this is just the right piece for those occasions when a message of hope is appropriate. Evocative of an early American folk hymn, the lyrical melody is paired with a flowing harmony line in the lower voice and effectively modulates up a whole step to the final verse, placing all voices firmly on the melody under a heavenly vocal descant on the Latin text Adoremus in aeternum. Smaller choirs will love this one.

A beautiful sung blessing featuring an ostinato refrain. The chanted opening and concluding prayers should be sung by a cantor in a prayerful manner that clearly communicates the text. Especially appropriate when used as a blessing on those embarking on significant work on behalf of Christ’s mission.choir supports the assembly’s ostinato refrain. The molto rit. at measure 38 is very important in order to signal to the assembly the end of the ostinato. Listen to this piece and follow the score in the video below:

The alternation of 5/4 and 6/4 meters adds interest to this lyrical tune. Two vocal parts alternate as well in the opening verses, adding the congregation and a descant for the final verse. Note that the last two measures ask for each vocal part to divide into dyads. A reproducible unison part (hymnal version) is included in the octavo.

Russell Schulz-Widmar's original music is beautifully wrapped around the eloquent poetry of theologian and parish priest, William H. Vanstone (1923-1999). The text speaks of the costly nature of God's love for the world, and reminds us that God is not distant, but deeply involved in all our pain and grief. Scored for two-part mixed choir, the writing is both moving and accessible. Include this anthem during Lent and in services of healing and care.

Muriel Herbert (1897-1984) was a British composer, pianist and singer. She studied at the Royal College of Music, where she met Charles Stanford and Roger Quilter. She wrote many songs for Voice and Piano in her early life, as well as some instrumental and orchestral works, but stopped composing after her husband left her in 1939. Her works were largely unappreciated until twenty years after her death, but they have now, quite rightly, become the subject of a keen and enthusiastic revival with a growing fan base.
The Lake Of Innisfree was one of her most popular works. It is a setting of a poem by the Irish poet W. B. Yates (1865-1939).

From 1717 to 1718, Handel composed eleven multi-movement, psalm-based anthems, commonly known as the Chandos Anthems (he was resident composer for the First Duke of Chandos during this period). is setting of verses from Psalm 96 is drawn from Anthem 4b, “O Sing unto the Lord a New Song†(HWV 249b). Chepponis’ thoughtful editing and arranging of this gem—based on original sources, as well as practical considerations— make it accessible to many choirs that may not have the luxury of a large SATB choir. In my opinion our world is currently in great need of reestablishing strong connections one to another, be it with family and friends, neighbors and strangers, nations and nations, or with those of different cultures and religions. In his important book, I and Thou, philosopher-theologian Martin Buber says that the most meaningful life is centered on relationship. As a musician, I felt compelled to express the I-THOU thesis through the human voice. In searching for the right words to express this sentiment, I was fortunate to find Kazuaki Tanahashi’s eloquent poem, “Encounter.†Mr. Tanahashi is a poet, Zen artist, scholar and peace activist. This combined-voices version has been adapted from an SATB scoring that features prominently in the original song cycle, I-THOU, written for vocal quartet, commissioned and premiered in 2018 by Fourth Coast Ensemble in Chicago. —Wayland Rogers About the Series: Doreen Rao, 2019 Robert Shaw Award recipient, launches her culturally inclusive choral series, Global Encounters for Young Voices, featuring accessible treble- and mixed-voice works for developing choirs.
