Pastoral Notes: Parishes that celebrate Children's Liturgy of the Word will find Go Now in Peace. an appropriate song to accompany the congregational dismissal or the sending of children to their celebration of the Word. The piece is also useful for the dismissal of catechumens, which take place following the homily. Verse four is particularly appropriate for this rite. The refrain's simplicity will allow any worshiping assembly to learn Go Now in Peace. quickly and easily.

Andy Beck brings his gift for vivid text painting, evocative piano motives, and tuneful melodies to a favorite wintertime poem. Though not a word-for-word setting, the themes of the Elinor Wylie's words are evident from the snow-covered introduction, winding melody, and expressive andante, to the silken harmonic palette and lacy choral layers. Choose this piece with the confidence that it has been carefully constructed to encourage musicality and artistry from any ensemble. Program the eloquent concert and contest work from fall to spring, anytime there might be snow on the ground. We shall walk in velvet shoes . . . under a veil of lace. Did you know the North Pole has a marching band? That's right, and Santa's the director! Who's on the roster? Elves, reindeer, and even Mrs. C! As this clever partner song unfolds, we sing about the whole crew and even imitate the sounds of their instruments. Mark time, march!

Be Joyful started life as the third movement of a larger piece for Chorus and Orchestra calledFlowers. This movement has such a delightful use of 7/8 that it gives the singers a charge to work on it. It became ome of thosealways humming it themes of the work. I have kept it cast for 4 voices, albeit SSAA now instead of the original SATB and I have adapted the orchestral accompaniment for piano. Probably the most important aspect of performing this piece is to keep the tempo going, and emphasize the thematic entrances as they shift from voice to voice. The poetry is by the Mesoamerican poet Nezahualcoyotl (1402-1472), one of the most prominent poets of the period who seems to have been keenly aware of time and change, cabuitl in Nahuatl, orthat which leaves us. Everything in tlalticpac,on the earth, is transitory. It appears here for a while but then withdraws and vanishes forever.
