Although best known as the sixth President of the United States, John Quincy Adams’ great desire was to write poetry, upon hearing his words set to music by one of his contemporaries, he exclaimed his delight “as the organ pealed and the choir of voices sung the praise of Almighty God from the soul of David, adapted to my native tongue by me.†This setting was written for SAB choir, however, it could be sung by an SSA ensemble as well. The tune is original, but Meyer has written in the style of the music that Adams might have heard in his day.

Melodic and harmonic interest are features of this song of faith. Stanza one establishes the tune, stanza two gives it to the men with women singing a counter melody, stanza three becomes a “B†section in this AABA form, and the final stanza raises the key and repeats the two counter melodies with S over AB. .

Listen to the Holy Voices would be an excellent Christmas anthem for a small ensemble or youth choir with even a few young unchanged voices with limited range. Verse 1 for solo voice, verse 2, a simple, wellcrafted canon connected by a colorful and contrasting interlude, and verse 3 for SAB joined by a spirited modulation.
