Audi Filia was written for the celebrations for St Cecilia's Day in Rome in October 1720. It was originally part of a much larger mass setting for the event, which is considered to be one of the finest pieces of music to survive from the Baroque era. This movement, intended for the gradual, is one of the more popular sections and is often performed as a stand-alone piece. It is scored for 2 Oboes, Strings, Organ, and Soprano solo.
Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725) was an Italian composer in the Baroque style, who mostly wrote for choral groups. He is best remembered for his operas and oratorios, but he also wrote several hundred chambercantatas for solo Voice.

This contemporary Christmas carol, with words by Mary Louise Bringle, is a gentle invitation to the mystery of the Incarnation. The original melody is scored for SAB voices and optional congregation, but could also be sung by children's voices. Traditional carol melodies, played on flute, are colorful interludes between stanzas, and optional string quartet parts add warmth.

My Exsultet uses the ancient chant to which the Easter Proclamation is declaimed, normally by a deacon at the start of the Great Vigil of Easter. The chant dates from somewhere between the fourth and seventh centuries and consists of formulaic repetitions of simple phrases. I have elaborated these phrases canonically, melodically, and harmonically into a three-part vocal fabric, accompanied by obbligato instruments. The full text of the original goes on for quite some time. My choral-instrumental version is much shorter.

This George Herbert text is set for SSA voices and piano. The text is a veiled description of Herbert’s relationship to God as paramount and beyond price. The pearl is a symbol for something sought but not easily found. The poet describes key pursuits in life (learning, honor, pleasure) and concludes “Yet I love thee.†Again and again the comparison is made between earthly and heavenly things, and the author concludes that the ultimate goal is “to climbe to thee.†There are various solo and small group opportunities marked in the music as well as “tutti choirs†and “massed voices.†Yet the music is not complex and is suitable for a variety of situations and ensembles.
