What a surprising idea using the Pierpont melody of “Jingle Bells†to create a beautifully warm setting for winter concerts. The text describes a scene of nature sleeping and dreaming beneath a blanket of snow set to simple yet rich harmonies with a touch of “sleep in heavenly peace†near the end. Exquisite.

This melody has been recorded by contemporary artists but has its roots as a traditional African song. Translating as âwe are the burning fire,â the song displays strength with its dynamic elements, optional percussion and repetitive harmonies that will appeal to younger and developing choirs.

African-American musicians Brook Benton and Clyde Otis collaborated on this bluesy ballad in 1959. Since then, the enduring piece has been recorded by iconic artists such as Etta James and Ray Charles. Verses present sentimental snapshots of Christmases past, and a crooner melody paints a warm holiday portrait. Santa Claus is on his way, loads of joy on his sleigh, this time of the year, when Christmas is near.

ACDA Executive Director, Tim Sharp, and famed Nashville composer Wes Ramsay joined forces to create a new and powerful anthem using the words from one of Southern Harmony's best-loved texts. A striking piano part opens the piece reminiscent of one of Grieg's Holberg Suites, that gives way to a flowing melody. Communion or Lent, medium in difficulty.

The traditional Jewish practice for the holiday of Hanukkah is to recall ancient miracles and increase the light in the world by lighting a nine-stemmed menorah. One candle is added each night until the menorah is full on the eighth night. After lighting the candles each night, those gathered around the menorah sing these ancient blessings. The first two blessings are sung on all eight nights, and the third blessing is only sung on the first. This melody, first published in New York in 1922, is commonly used throughout the world. It is sung by crowds of thousands gathering to light a community menorah and small families gathering in their homes alike.

After a short preamble, the soaring, original melody is passed back and forth between the women's and men's voices, I am the resurrection and the life. The middle, contrasting section has the voices singing homophonically, and then the alternating material returns. A coda reminiscent of the preamble contains the title text. An easy, effective anthem which is useful at several points in the liturgical year. Duration: 4:30.
