This George Herbert text is set for SSA voices and piano. The text is a veiled description of Herbert’s relationship to God as paramount and beyond price. The pearl is a symbol for something sought but not easily found. The poet describes key pursuits in life (learning, honor, pleasure) and concludes “Yet I love thee.†Again and again the comparison is made between earthly and heavenly things, and the author concludes that the ultimate goal is “to climbe to thee.†There are various solo and small group opportunities marked in the music as well as “tutti choirs†and “massed voices.†Yet the music is not complex and is suitable for a variety of situations and ensembles.

Beyond the silver mountains, beyond the beautiful hills, my spirit and joy, my lovely one, has gone, and winds have been stilled. Douglas Wagner wrote this tender song of parting shortly after his mother's passing. Scored especially for smaller mixed ensembles, careful attention has been made to the voice leading in all parts. Teachable moments of phrasing, breath support, and tall vowels make this a strong selection for developing choirs.

About Jónas HalgrÃmsson (1807-1845) was an Icelandic poet, author and naturalist, who is considered one of Iceland's most renowned poets. Considered a Romantic writer, the strong imagery in his poetry was influenced heavily by the landscapes around him.The imagery, excitement, and curiosity of the universe leapt off the page and the music almost wrote itself. Reflecting on the cosmos and origin of the heavens, the poetry elicits excitement and stirs spatial imagery - ...speeding spark of light, ...wings swifter than wind..., ...I watched the stars...rise from the still stream of heaven... The pure and almost child-like fascination with the universe and its expansion and progression fuels the perpetual rhythm of the work as it continually pushes forward.A good friend asked if I would write a song for her ensemble. The original voicing, for SAB choir, contained parameters in that it had to be three-part with a limited range in the Bass part. With these stipulations I began to write. I searched for something that would be exciting for them and landed on Jonas Halgrimsson’s writings. I believe it is equally as exciting, accessible and challenging for treble choirs.Note to the DirectorTruly consider how the work can come to ‘life’ off the page. Rise and fall with phrase and sometimes each note. The magic exists beyond the ink on the page!Consideration to range, tessitura, and content was all considered as part of this process in creating music that is accessible to all programs and ensembles.Accompaniment NoteThe accompaniment can look intimidating, but please feel free to alter the pulsing eighth notes in the left hand with the eighth notes in the right-hand so it creates a compound rhythm. So long as the momentum of the work is pressed onward, you are doing this work justice.About Jónas HalgrÃmsson (1807-1845) was an Icelandic poet, author and naturalist, who is considered one of Iceland's most renowned poets. At the end of December 1930, Nino Rota travelled to the United States of America where he was accepted at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia upon the recommendation of Arturo Toscanini. One year later, he composed Four Canons: four short compositions the lyrics of which are based on Italian love poems from the 15th and 16th centuries. The madrigal-like style of the unison canons testifies to an innovativeness which goes far beyond a simple study work.

If you have looked longingly at Jerry Noble's spirituals, and decided they were just a little beyond your choir, this arrangement written for children's choir is good news for you! The combined setting of Wade in the Water and Deep River has all the rhythmic energy and pianistic bravura we love in Jerry's work--but with just two or three choral parts. SSA & Piano; English.
