Manmohan Ghose was a professor, poet, and brilliant scholar from Eastern India in the late 19th century. He was educated in London, and was one of the first poets originally from India to publish poetry in English. A Lament is one of his earliest published poems; it progresses with vivid, scenic language from lullaby to permanent goodbye. Much later in life, Manmohan experienced a series of family tragedies that gave him a unique perspective on grief. After returning to India to mourn his father's death and eventually the passing of his wife, he never again made it back to England as he had wished to before his own death. The text of this piece has been paired with a mixolydian modal structure and a blend of musical elements designed to invoke a nostalgic, dream-like atmosphere. In the words of the composer: I like to think of this piece as a metaphorical hall of mirrors. The original 'image' of the melody becomes the source for multiple echoes and imitations that blossom into layers of polyphonic movement. As a nod to the poet's birth place, notes reminiscent of the kan-swar grace note technique of Hindustani classical music add ornamental interest to the piano and voices. This piece functions as an excellent educational introduction or further study into the concept of modes. When presenting this piece to a choir, directors may find it helpful to identify G as the tonal center and follow up with an explanation that G mixolydian has the same key signature as the key of C, because it naturally has no sharps or flats.Manmohan Ghose was a professor, poet, and brilliant scholar from Eastern India in the late 19th century. This expressive medley combines two beloved Christmas carols, creating a gentle lullaby. Even so, it has moments of joy that are sung forte, and lots of dynamic contrasts that help the lyrics come to life. As you work on this piece, try to remember the volume level that is indicated in the score. Its very easy to sing everything mezzo-forte while you are learning words, notes, and parts, then add the dynamics in later. However, when you practice this way, you will have to un-learn the medium dynamic level. Be sure to follow your director very carefully, so that the tempo changes are accomplished together. These subtle variations will create a moving experience for you and for your listener. Good friends see the best in us. They tend to downplay our faults while applauding our strengths. In short, they encourage us to be the best we can be, maybe even a little more. The text of Paint Me was born out of the desire to be that person my best friend thinks I am. To Mary Jo, my sister and best friend. May I really be that person you see and love. In setting the text of Paint Me to music, I tried to let the cadence of the words dictate the rhythm of the music. Use rubato, word stress and syllabic stress to enhance this. Remember, no two eighth notes are alike, so dont be afraid to let the interior part of a phrase move along, while relaxing the beginning and ending. I would recommend a straight tone as opposed to vibrato for the held notes, since the accompaniment plays around with other harmonies while choral chords are being held. Diction is so important in this song. You have a great opportunity to paint the words, as well as making every idea understood. Enjoy adding the color and shading to make this piece of art your own.Good friends see the best in us. They tend to downplay our faults while applauding our strengths. Victor's arrangement of this gentle nativity carol from Spain is sung entirely in the original language (a pronunciation and translation are included). This sensitive treatment captures the lullaby mood and adds a light rhythmic undercurrent in moderate 3/4 time. The tonality shifts seamlessly between D minor and D major to reflect a text that moves from quieting the baby to a rushing fountain and singing birds. While the words do return, no two verses are set in the same manner, creating an ever-evolving arrangement. Piano fingers dance over the keys with triplet turns and easily grasp the bigger chords in the supportive and stylistic accompaniment. A nice contrast on holiday programs.

This jubilant song of exaltation is designed to make mixed and changing meters intuitive, familiar, easy. Organized in 3 + 2 + 2, the dance-like main theme is quickly mastered. A small number of familiar Latin words and some English text combine into an exuberant concert/contest selection. Listen for the glorious soprano descant, optional trumpet fanfare, and rhythmic timpani part that add majesty, while anchoring the meter.

I've always enjoyed celebratory and rhythmic singing. I also know there's a need for this style in treble voices. The holiday season is a perfect time to create such a work. The text of The Angels' Gloria is based on the familiar Montgomery hymn with original music. This work can be easily be done as a call and answer or antiphonal setting. Try using it as a processional, too. Hearing the voices surround the audience is always exciting for everyone and a superb teaching and learning experience. The accompaniment is intentionally simple and bell-like, supporting the three-part harmonies. I've also created a B-section that is a cappella in full three-part singing, rich and full giving lots of contrast to the piece. There is so much good teaching throughout the piece, making for interesting rehearsals and a terrific performance piece. I hope this adds just the right sparkle for your Christmas or holiday program.—Greg Gilpin.

Ed has written a cantor, choir, and assembly-friendly setting of the Sequence for Pentecost using the approved text from The Roman Missal. The stepwise motion of the lyrical melody facilitates a quick learn. The piece begins in D major for the first four verses, modulates to E for the next three verses, moves to F for verses 8 and 9, and concludes with the final verse in G. The interval relationships are the same with each modulation, highlighting the words and adding a sense of urgency. The octavo includes a keyboard part, but you will note that this can be performed with just a simple guitar accompaniment. And, guitar pages are included in the octavo.

This piece shows all the hallmarks of Joel Martinson's expressive style. The text by Delores Dufner, OSB, is fresh and appealing as is the musical setting. The opening rhythmic theme supports the text of praise, while the quieter section illuminates words of thanksgiving. The piece concludes with a jubilant alleluia. The organ part is a major voice itself, providing an exciting impetus to the piece.

There is a Balm in Gilead is a well-known, traditional African-American spiritual. The “balm in Gilead†is a reference from the Old Testament, but the lyrics of this spiritual refer to the New Testament concept of salvation. The balm of Gilead is interpreted as a spiritual medicine that is able to heal Israel (and sinners in general). In the Old Testament, the balm of Gilead is taken most directly from Jeremiah chapter 8 v. 22: Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the wounds of my [God's] people? This a cappella arrangement stays close to the simple, emotional source material. The words and the music embody weariness, resignation and hope, as the realities of slavery are met with the hope of salvation. There is a Balm in Gilead was originally part of a larger work, entitled, Mpaka simba watapo, for treble chorus, African drums and piano.  .
