It was during a short, weekend vacation cruise to Ensenada. B.C. (from Los Angeles) with the St. Cyril Choir that the idea for an Amazing Grace Mass came about. The more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea of writing for chorus and bagpipes. The early draft used two bagpipes, but when we had a piper come to a rehearsal so that we could see how it would work, it became readily apparent that one piper would be more than enough. It was, in fact, just right. The final form of the piece was achieved by a process of progressive simplification, i.e., the bagpipe part had to be simplified in order for it to be coherent and not just noise. The chorus, needed simplification in order to compete with the sheer volume of the bagpipe during performance. Thus, the piper basically plays the tune Amazing Grace throughout each movement of the Mass, while the chorus sometimes sings the same tune, and sometimes sings uncomplicated lines against the piper melody. The text is the full Proper of the Roman Catholic Mass in Latin.

Handel’s “Deidamia†was premièred on 10 January 1741 only a few weeks after “Imeneoâ€.The librettist Paoli Rolli , a previously unsucessful librettist for Handel, delivered with his finest work “Deidamiaâ€. On 10 February 1741 the third and final opera performances of this work took place under Handel’s direction. Oddly enough “Deidamia†would not be performed again until the beginning of the 20th century. This opera is based on the themes of humour and seriousness. The personal harmonising of Heroism (Achilles) and Love ( Deidamia ) build on the essential dramatic features of this work. “Deidamia†is the last great opera in a series of masterpieces: “Orlandoâ€, “Poroâ€, “Ezioâ€, “Ariodanteâ€, “Alcinaâ€, “Serse†and “Imeneoâ€. The vocal score is based on the Urtext of the Halle Handel Editon.

Composed for Craig Hella Johnson and Conspirare, the composer writes: Same Train, in many arrangements seems to sing of good news coming. But – maybe it was the relentlessness, the conclusiveness of the title phrase – I wondered if what was coming might actually have been a funeral train: coming for “our sister, our mother,” and...soon enough for us, too. I thought of so many other spirituals which sing about dark truths in bright music, and wondered if I couldn't use the imitative, “ch-ch-train” ostinato to honor that willfully smiling aspect of the piece, while also freeing the harmonies to make audible the more disconsolate feelings underneath.

When Tim Sharp, Executive Director of the ACDA, offered Stucky the Brock Memorial Commission, it was decided that the text would commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, since the annual convention would take place in Dallas of that year. To that end, Stucky chose four different but pertinent texts to honor the occasion, although never referencing JFK by name. Take Him, Earth was premiered at the ACDA convention in March, 2013. Originally scored for chorus and chamber ensemble of nine instruments (available on a rental basis), Take Him, Earth is presented here in piano reduction. For advanced choirs. Duration: 13'.When Tim Sharp, Executive Director of the American Choral Directors Association, very kindlyoffered me the Raymond W. Brock Memorial Commission for 2013, he suggested that because thepremiere would take place at the national conference in Dallas in the 50th year since the assassinationof John F. Kennedy in that city, the text might refer in some way to that grim anniversary. Hesuggested, too, that I consider using a chamber ensemble or chamber orchestra to accompany thechorus.I took these suggestions to heart, but at the same time I wanted to write something universal enoughto be appropriate on other occasions, in other settings. Thus the score is dedicated to PresidentKennedy’s memory, but otherwise he is never referred to by name. Instead, I assembled a group oftexts that are associated with him in some way, but that also stand alone as a more general eulogy. As a refrain, there are a few lines from the early Christian burial hymn that begins “Take him,Earth, for cherishing†— lines that were earlier set to music by Herbert Howells in his classic motetcommissioned for Kennedy’s memorial service in 1963. The lines of Aeschylus “Drop, drop — inour sleep, upon the heart sorrow falls†from Agamemnon were quoted by Robert F. Kennedy uponthe death of Martin Luther King in April 1968. The celebrated “When he shall die, cut him out inlittle stars†from Act III of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was cited by RFK a few months after hisbrother’s murder.

Four Motets and a Chorale are choral interpolations drawn from Randall Giles' Latin setting of St. John's Passion. Movements I, II and V have organ accompaniment, primarily derived from the choral parts. Perhaps the best-known of these texts is Crux fidelis--Faithful Cross--which is set as a traditional four-part chorale. In the other four movements, Dr. Giles blends chromatic voice leading and varied meters (often within wide tessituras) to augment the naturally expressive sense of the texts.
