“This piece is a morning tune [Morgenlied], for which I have set an excerpt from The Lord Chandos Letter by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. I imagine the melodic vocal line alongside the resonant piano timbre to reflect the poet’s indescribable feelings for the magic of reality and his fascination with the inability of language to define the essence of things. I could not resist forging a connection between the description of von Hofmannsthal’s experience of infinity and the dream journey of a shaman.†–Thierry Pécou.

This second collection of Alan Gaunt's works contains 56 hymn texts written between 1991 and 1996, and includes 34 translations from the Welsh of hymnwriter Ann Griffiths. The title, taken from a sonnet by Vernon Watkins, reflects what Fred Kaan, in the introduction to this book, describes as the author's fascination with eternal glory, coupled with the earth-boundness of his daily life, that enables him to choose words and use expressions that catch the inexpressible.

Despite all of its folk-line simplicity of melody, Haydn's first mass contains a pious note that, just like its youthful verve, still was to hold fascination for him in his late years when, in 1805, he re-orchestrated his first work. The first version of the mass is considered to have been composed in 1749 or 1750. It was around the same time that Pope Benedict XIV treated questions concerning church music in his encyclical Annus qui in which he condemned the frequently operatic style of church music and demanded liturgical music that revealed an awareness of its religious purpose and that sought to fulfill it with simple means of musical expression. In its liturgical attitude Haydn's first mass is anchorded in this point of view (that to a great extent corresponded to the general standpoint of the churches of the eighteenth century). Since an invitation to the Emerald Isle, Harald Genzmer (1909-2007) has been fascinated with the local tradition and culture. Therefore, after the songs 'Irische Harfe', he wrote another cycle for mixed choir at a ripe old age: 'Lieder einer Insel'. In three parts with ten choral settings altogether, the composer tells stories from the mythology of the Emerald Isle in the Irish poems, in the texts of old and modern lyricists, describes emotions, desires, laments: from 'Weissagung Cathbads' to 'Lobgesang der Gerechten', from the bright 'Monch und seinem Lieblingskater' to the sad lament 'Das Lied in einem Madchenherzen', from the tender 'Anrufung des Friedens' to the contemplate 'Abendgebet'. The freely tonal settings range from simple, chordal-homophonic via declamatory to expressive. Of intermediate difficulty, these choral miniatures are suitable not only for professional ensembles but also for ambitious amateur choirs.

The masses of Johann Michael Haydn are masterworks in the church music repertoire and they were widely appreciated during his lifetime, as is proved by the many copies made of them. The Missa Sancti Dominici belongs, through its mooring with trumpets and drums, in the category of the missa solemnis. It also owes its tonal splendour partly to the richness of its compositional process, marked by sometimes rapid alternation between choral and solo passages. This is a richly rewarding, fascinating work for accomplished choirs to perform, not only at festive services. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.9100800.

The C Minor Mass K. 427 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is a fascinating work. But to speak of the Mass is inaccurate, for basically it is no more than a musical torso, full of enigmas and problems, yet full of magnificent music. It is hardly surprising that attempts have been made to create a performable version of Mozart's fragment since the 19th century. Depending on the date of reconstruction and background of the arranger, these attempts sound quite different, and often the individual style of the respective arranger can be clearly discerned. Now Frieder Bernius and Uwe Wolf have published a new edition of the Mozart mass which attempts to produce a performing version whilst maintaining the greatest respect for the available material, and without obscuring Mozart's musical manuscript with their own contributions. The joint version by Wolf, a renowned musicologist, and Bernius, an expert in historically-informed performance practice, is based on a thorough knowledge of Mozart's compositions, his notational habits, and church music practice of Mozart's day. At the same time it fully meets the requirements of today's performance practice. As well as the paperback full score, we are publishing a high-quality clothbound full score including a Facsimile Supplement with selected reproductions of the sources. A first recording of this version, with the Kammerchor Stuttgart and the Barockorchester Stuttgart conducted by Frieder Bernius, is also available. Score available separately - see item CA.5165100.

We belong to the earth, introduced by his text, which consists of words by the Indian chief Seattle and a verse from the Bible (Job 36, verse 4), in nature-like and aural impressions of the primeval vagueness and the later material reality of the different peoples. The four-part mixed-voice choir is joined by a varied ensemble of percussion instruments, with vibraphone, cowbells and thunder stick in the foreground. At its concludion: Perhaps we are all brothers? We shall see! this piece, with its emphasis on percussion, is a fascinating work of our time. Score available separately - see item CA.9730300.

First published in 1920, the Twelve Traditional Carols from Herefordshire have been entirely reset in a new and practical format, with the choral arrangements of the songs underlaid for all the verses and presented in open score alongside voice-and-keyboard versions for accompanied or solo performance. An acknowledged authority in the subject, Roy Palmer has provided fascinating notes on the texts and music. His preface places the collection in the context of Vaughan Williams's lifelong interest in folk song both as collector and creative artist, and of his collaboration with Ella Mary Leather, who did much to preserve the folklore heritage of her native county and of the gipsy tradition in particular. The Twelve Traditional Carols from Herefordshire have been recorded by baritone Derek Welton and pianist Iain Burnside on Albion Records ALBCD013.
