Stephen Collins Foster lived from 1826 to 1864, until only age 37. He was extremely prolific, with numerous songs that have lasted to this day. I first had the idea to arrange Beautiful Dreamer for SATB choirs a cappella, after hearing Kristen Chenoweth in concert. She ended her concert, in a 1,600 seat hall, with Beautiful Dreamer, an a cappella solo, with no microphone. Given the beautiful melody, text and Ms. Chenoweth's voice, one could have heard a pin drop in the audience. Her performance concluded to thunderous applause and a standing ovation. The power of music. Throughout this arrangement, the harmonies support the beautiful melody and text (rather than get in its' way). Opportunities abound for vocal parts to be showcased as well as an optional solo/duet at the beginning. Sing freely, with pure vowels, crisp diction and sensitivity, allowing the text to prevail by giving special attention to stressed and unstressed syllables and words. I hope you enjoy singing this arrangement in rehearsal and performance to the delight of your audience. Tell the story through song because that's what we should always do when performing choral music. Russell Robinson, Arranger  .Stephen Collins Foster lived from 1826 to 1864, until only age 37. This collection presents five Christina Rosetti poems set by Per Drud Nielsen for unaccompanied SATB choir. Had Christina Rossetti lived 40 years earlier and not written in English but in German, I am convinced that the many Lied-composers in the first half of the 19th century would have gathered around her. And in many ways I have set her poems to music in the spirit of the Lied tradition: I have made use of simple, modified strophic forms. And if you hear a loan from a well-known Schumann-Lied in one of my Rossetti-songs, you are not mistaken. - Per Drud Nielsen.

The harmonic turns and piano configurations in La vie anterieure - the former life - seem almost exuberantly lyrical. At the beginning, the archaic sounds and words of the male choir conjure up a dream world that is soon flooded with the power of the waves and the rich polyphonic harmony of the choir and the piano. With the outcry C'est la que j'ai vecu! [I have lived there] which expresses the fervent yearning to return to a past life, the collective desperately reinforces the longing for the past. Once more, the women's choir conjures up this lost paradise in an undulating soft sound before the desolate sadness is pierced by the power of the music of the piano postlude, creating a moment that is completely in the present.
