The St. John Passion ranks alongside the St. Matthew Passion, the Christmas Oratorio, the Magnificat and the B minor Mass as one of the great vocal works from Johann Sebastian Bach's Leipzig years. In contrast to his other large-scale choral works, however, Bach never gave this work a definitive final form. Rather, for every performance he substantially revised the general concept of the piece and also changed numerous details. All previous editions of the St. John Passion have combined readings from various layers of sources and thus present the work in a form which was never heard during Bach's lifetime. Consequently, the wish often expressed by conductors to perform an authentic version by Bach could not be easily achieved. The present critical, new edition of the St. John Passion fulfills this wish and for the first time makes available the complete music of the second version of the work as it was performed under Bach's direction in 1725. Since a number of movements were replaced by others, including the opening chorus, this version differs most dramatically from the standard version which is well known today. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3124500.

The cantata Die Himmel erzahlen die Ehre Gottes (The heavens are telling of God in glory) BWV 76 by Johann Sebastian Bach was written for the 2nd Sunday after Trinity, which fell on 6 June 1723 in the year it was first performed. This ambitious two-part work was the second cantata which Bach wrote after taking up the position of Kantor of St. Thomas's in Leipzig. Bach's aim was evidently to demonstrate a particularly wide range of musical forms in both the arias and the recitatives in this cantata. The opening chorus is based on verses 2 and 4 of Psalm 19, with verse 4 structured as a choral fugue. Both parts of the cantata end with a chorale movement with different verses from the Lutheran hymn Es woll uns Gott genadig sein. The text refers loosely to the epistle reading from the 1st letter of St John, but deals more with general thoughts about the temptations of the Christian which can be overcome through love. Bach also performed the first part of the cantata later with minor revisions, but evidently no alterations to the text, on Reformation Day in Leipzig. For many choral singers Jesu, meine Freude is not just a motet by Bach, but the motet par excellence. Bach's motets as a whole have to be described as exceptional works, but even amongst these this is an exceptional work which is out of the ordinary not only in terms of its length. The formal conception, with its alternating chorale and Bible verses in 11 sections in a symmetrical structure, is also unique. The motet was very probably composed for a funeral, but no further details about this are known. By comparison, there are clear indications that the motet, as we now know it, was probably not composed in one go, but was composed over a long period of time. The cantata Ihr Menschen, ruhmet Gottes Liebe (You mortals, tell of God's devotion) BWV 167 is one of the first works which Bach wrote in his capacity as Kantor of St. Thomas's Leipzig. It was composed for the Feast of St John, and was performed for the first time on 24 June 1723 in Leipzig. This concise and lively cantata is scored for four vocal soloists and modest instrumental forces; only the final chorale Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehren is for all four vocal parts and the use of strings, with the soprano reinforced by a slide trumpet. The text is partly drawn verbatim from Zacharias's hymn of praise in St Luke's Gospel chapter 1. It praises God's grace and love, as fulfilled by his promise of salvation through Jesus for which John has prepared the way and the path. Score available separately - see item CA.3116700.
