Hailstork’s exhilarating addition to the Psalm 117 repertoire draws inspiration from his elegant blend of traditional choral writing, with a spiritual-like melody in the Basses, and a tinge of Gospel fervor. The excitement of irregular meter, and independent part-writing with divisi chords, make O PRAISE THE LORD a perfect concert work for college, community, and advanced high school choirs to rise up to a challenge that is easily attained. Only Hailstork’s magical artistry could spawn such a psalm setting in a minor key that is fully uplifting to sing and hear.

Having been considered as a 'fashionable' and 'cliché' composer of his day, Hahn's compositions are possibly not as well-known as they ought to be. Rondels for SATB choir and Piano however, shatter these prejudices held, representing the engaging diversity of the composer's music. Venezuelan born Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947) entered the Paris Conservatoire at 10 years old. He received a high standard of musical education from Decombes, Lavignac,Dubois and Massenet before becoming a prolific and versatile composer himself, writing works for all genres. For Hahn, music was a magical art and his compositions often contain expressions of his otherwise hidden emotions andmoods. Rondels is made up of twelve movements, depicting different aspects of nature. Hahn's Rondels contains a variety of different features, making for a pleasant and evocative work for advanced choirs.

Antony Herschel Hill's Ave Verum Corpus for unaccompanied SATB is one of a number of liturgical works by this gifted composer. Written for Prebendary John Pearce and the choir of St Simon Zelotes, Chelsea, London, Hill's setting projects the awe and mystery of the text through a rich variety of harmony that particularly exploits the lower registers of the individual voices to great effect. If you have a really good choir, take advantage of this and buy it. For pure musicianship little else has equalled it recently; the sense of architecture is superb, the climaxes are clean, controlled and never contrived, and the final section, 'miserere mei', uses a wonderfully restrained sense of chromaticism. What a magic piece.

Franz Schubert's Mass in G major is one of the most popular settings of the mass ordinary: the charming song-like melodic writing, especially in the Kyrie and the Credo, forms a magical counterpoint to more concertante passages in the Gloria and the Sanctus. For a long time it was thought that Schubert's final version was scored for purely string orchestra, whilst a version with wind, brass, and timpani was thought to be an expanded orchestration by his brother Ferdinand Schubert. However, since the mid-1990s it has been known that the parts for trumpets and timpani were additionally composed by Franz Schubert himself for use ad libitum. The present edition offers this Klosterneuburg Version - with trumpets and timpani ad libitum, but without Ferdinand's wind parts - in an Urtext edition reflecting Schubert's own intended orchestration. This work is available in carus music, the choir app! Score and part available separately - see item CA.4067500.

With the Missa Sancti Nicolai and the Missa Sancti Joannis de Deo, his last to missae breves, Haydn also achieved masterworks in this category, and during his lifetime they numbered among his most popular works. This so called Little Organ Solo Mass has never been accused of being unsuitable for church use despite the text stratification in the Gloria and Credo. Inspite of the unusual brevity of the Gloria (31 bars), the text setting still shows musical differentation. The strength of the composition lies in its expressive ability to force the listener under its spell with magic power. The full score contains at the same time the organ part. Score available separately - see item CA.4060000.

“This piece is a morning tune [Morgenlied], for which I have set an excerpt from The Lord Chandos Letter by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. I imagine the melodic vocal line alongside the resonant piano timbre to reflect the poet’s indescribable feelings for the magic of reality and his fascination with the inability of language to define the essence of things. I could not resist forging a connection between the description of von Hofmannsthal’s experience of infinity and the dream journey of a shaman.†–Thierry Pécou.
