Peter Maxwell Davies' 1990 work for unaccompanied SATB choir, written for the BBC singers. Words by George Mackay Brown. 'Written for the BBC Singers, this piece requires a high level of choral expertise in its rhythms, intricate textures (though nearly always in four parts), wide-ranging vocal lines and characteristically dark but luminous harmony, impregnated with tritones and seconds. Not for the first time, Davies and George Mackay Brow follow the Stations of the Cross, though the fourteen sections are joined into a continuous slow-fast-slow musical movement, and the references to the events of Holy Week are oblique. Vocal score with piano accompaniment for rehearsal purposes.

Appointed Master of the Queen's Music in 2004, Max, as he is fondly known, has now written four Christmas Carols for Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. At just under four minutes in length this traditional-style carol uses the words of long standing friend George Mackay Brown's poem 'Hamnavoe Women and the Warbeth Bell'. It’s not the first time Max has chosen to use texts by the poet who, like Max, lived on the Orkney Islands.

Spanish. Text Source: Filipenses / Philippians 2:6-11, La Biblia Latinoamérica Scripture: Philippians 2:6–11.
Commissioned by the American Federation Pueri Cantores to showcase diversity within the Spanish-language choral repertoire, this advanced choral piece written for SATB voices and piano accompaniment is a setting of Philippians chapter 2, in which Saint Paul exalts Christ as the “name above all names†for having taken on human form to die on the cross. The piece is in three sections, mirroring the three-part form of the scripture passage: a gentle, stoic homophonic opening in C major, a polyphonic, somber middle section in A minor at the words “even death on a cross,†and an exuberant section in A major climaxing in the final statement that “Christ Jesus is the Lord!†For choirs looking for a musical challenge and an opportunity to showcase the choral arts using scriptural texts in Spanish, this masterful work makes for a tremendous concert piece, prelude or liturgical anthem. Matsushita has conceived his setting of the Pentecost sequence entirely in the Renaissance polychoral tradition. He employs the full choir (within individual choirs divisi passages also occasionally occur) solely for magnificent sounding climaxes at conclusions, prior to these occurrences he repeatedly combines groups of voices or he allows individual choirs to sing, effectively, in alternation. This type of reduction is even carried over to quasi Gregorian passages sung by one voice in unison. The piece is tonal throughout, with occasional diatonic seasoning. The consistently homophonic setting is oriented towards the declamation of the Latin text. Melodically it is in the style of modal, Gregorian structures, without quoting the well-known sequence. A fast, rhythmically syncopated declamatory section introduces, the dramaturgically appropriate climax to the solemn conclusion, which, molto legato, returns once again with large upward swings to the text of the first strophe. Matsushita writes in a comfortable vocal range so that the work can be sung, at the same time, in both a relaxed and grandiose manner. For large choirs, even for oratorio choirs with only limited experience in a cappella singing, this piece is aptly suited for performance and the music is both grateful and brings much joy for singers.

Commissioned by the Anglo-Chinese Junior College Alumni Choir, Singapore, and first performed in December 2018, The Isaiah Carol uses text from the book of Isaiah which tells of the of the profound changes in the world that come with the arrival of the Messiah at Christmas (The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat...). The peaceful character of the music reflects the hope and concord of the text, and incorporates Arnesens characteristic warm harmonies and beautiful melodic craftmanship. Each verse is interspersed with alleluias which build to celebratory climaxes and harmonic twists which will delight both performer and audience. Suitable for intermediate choirs, this carol is sure to become a favourite for both Christmas concerts and Services.

Both of the Kyrie settings in E flat major K. 322 (1778/79) and C major K. 323 (probably not prior to 1790) belong to those works by Mozart which were only handed down as incomplete draft scores. However, in both cases Mozart's original drafts were so extensive and well advanced that Abbe Maximilian Stadler, Mozart's friend and known from the history associated with the Requiem, could complete both settings. Score available separately - see item CA.5132200.

In 1830, for the first edition of the Kyrie K. 323 Stadler employed the text of the Marian Antiphon for Easter Regina coeli laetare for the vocal parts. The Carus edition presents both the original text (Kyrie), as well as the text from the first edition (Regina coeli), so that the work may be performed in the Mass or in the context of a solemn Vespers during the time of Easter. The Lines from 'The Youth of Man' is dedicated to the University of Birmingham Motet Choir. Crafted with the composer's usual skill in choral writing, it uses the technique whereby two voice parts often double each other an octave apart. In three continuous sections, it rises to three climaxes, the third of them, which is the biggest, has much subdivision at the words 'Depths of thyself'. These are then repeated as the quietening peroration.

Antony Herschel Hill's Ave Verum Corpus for unaccompanied SATB is one of a number of liturgical works by this gifted composer. Written for Prebendary John Pearce and the choir of St Simon Zelotes, Chelsea, London, Hill's setting projects the awe and mystery of the text through a rich variety of harmony that particularly exploits the lower registers of the individual voices to great effect. If you have a really good choir, take advantage of this and buy it. For pure musicianship little else has equalled it recently; the sense of architecture is superb, the climaxes are clean, controlled and never contrived, and the final section, 'miserere mei', uses a wonderfully restrained sense of chromaticism. What a magic piece.
