A festive setting based on the 12th century text by Bernard of Clairvaux. A stirring introduction adroitly leads into a choral refrain that has Steve‚ trademark qualities, it‚ assembly-friendly and lyrical. The solo verses float above and are supported by the choir humming in 4-parts - a graceful effect that brings us back to the joyous refrain with all instruments, God has made all things one!‚.

The Missa Sti Bernardi von Offida (1796) stands at the beginning of Joseph Haydn's late works. The Mass earned its nickname because in the Sanctus Haydn quoted the then well-known sacred hymn Heilig, heilig, heilig. The text of the music for this critical edition presents the work with the complete scoring for winds, including the clarinets and horns missing in the autograph score and the first edition. The optional horn parts are contained in the appendix and as part of the performance material. However, these parts cannot be dispensed with if we wish to fully re-create the Mass within the context of Eisenstadt. Score available separately - see item CA.4060800.

A festive concertato for All Saints, Pentecost, and general use, this begins with a lengthy introduction (options for a shorter intro are specified). Using the tune WIE SCHON LEUCHTET, the composer has fashioned an upbeat setting of this hymn for congregation, soprano descant, SATB choir, and organ. The use of brass quartet and timpani is optional. Stanza one is in unison, stanza two is a choral variation for SATB choir, accompanied. There is an interlude which draws from the introduction, and stanza four is unison with descant.

English. Text Source: Ps. 118, ref., Lectionary for Mass, vss., The Abbey Psalms and Canticles Scripture: Psalm 118.
This setting of Psalm 118 is centered around two themes, the hymn tune PUER NOBIS as the refrain and A Trumpett Minnuett by Jeremiah Clarke, which serves for a ritornello, the returning musical theme that acts as an interlude between the refrain and the verses. It can be performed with the full complement of instruments, or with solo trumpet, with strings, or with organ alone.

Cantata BWV 127 belongs to the cycle of chorale cantatas which Bach performed in 1724/25 in Leipzig. It bears close links to the St John Passion, which was performed on Good Friday 1725 in its second version. In formal terms and in the interpretation of the text and its orchestration, it is one of the most astonishing vocal works by Bach. The opening chorus, with its multi-layered construction, is nothing less than a preliminary version for the chorale fantasia O Mensch bewein dein Sunde gross. The aria Die Seele ruht in Jesu Handen is distinguished by its exquisite scoring: a solo oboe and the soprano form a duet, whilst the background comprises delicate chords on recorders and continuo, intended to symbolize funeral bells. A solo trumpet gives the following movement particular brilliance. The words Ich breche mit starker und helfender Hand unmistakably anticipate the chorus Sind Blitze, sind Donner in Wolken verschwunden from the St Matthew Passion. New revised edition. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3112700.

Both of the Kyrie settings in E flat major K. 322 (1778/79) and C major K. 323 (probably not prior to 1790) belong to those works by Mozart which were only handed down as incomplete draft scores. However, in both cases Mozart's original drafts were so extensive and well advanced that Abbe Maximilian Stadler, Mozart's friend and known from the history associated with the Requiem, could complete both settings. In 1830, for the first edition of the Kyrie K. 323 Stadler employed the text of the Marian Antiphon for Easter Regina coeli laetare for the vocal parts. The Carus edition presents both the original text (Kyrie), as well as the text from the first edition (Regina coeli), so that the work may be performed in the Mass or in the context of a solemn Vespers during the time of Easter. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5132300.
